 Includes NotesNotes for Jean Mathieu:
Jean came to New France on the ship Saint-Andre, with a capacity of 300 tons, and dropped anchor off Cap-Aux-Diamant. Upon departing from La Rochelle on 2 July, they failed to place in quarantine the ship's hospital which had been used for the last two year to treat the embarked soldiers. The shores of France had barely disappeared behind the waves of the Atlantic when the 130 passengers and crew began to twist with spasms of the plague. Since it seems that misfortune never happens alone, added to the scourge were Stormes, a shortage of pure water, insufficient provisions, and the stench and promiscuity in the communal cabins. result; at least ten bodies which had to be toss over the side and almost as many others which they would have to bury a short time later.
The family most stricken by this voyage was that of Mathurin Thibaudeau and Catherine Avrard.. This couple fron Maran embarked with four children, but none survived.
Jean arrived from the hamlet of Tapis, between Montignac and Coulonges, in Angoumois ( Charente] . These small towns were connected on the north side, to the basin of Angouleme; they were already known in medieval times by the Latin name MONTIGNAC and COLLONGIIS.and still retain vestiges of feudal chateaux dating to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In 1659, Cardinal Mazarin, Richelieu's successor, had completed his tumultuous career, his crushing taxes and stripped the people and created the upheaval of la Fronde. Now all that was ended. Make way for the Sun King! Mathieu did not wait for the problems of
France to settled. Instead long live New France.
Was Jean Mathieu rich and prosperous as some have stated? This claim barely holds up under the anativities of the mass of document which describe his activities. It is true that he handled a lot of money, and bartered perhaps more, especially at the time when he practiced his trade of butcher at Quebec. What remained of this? Debts which forced the heirs to sell the house at La Canardiere order, at least , to keep the land at L'Anfe-Gardien. All that is of little importance. We must remember that this ancestor set up a solid foundation a whole dynasty of families, including several who were illustrious(Priest, politicians, judge, famous musicians, etc.] and found a little bit everywhere in North America.
