NOTE: AUNT ROSA " Grandpa Carpenter was married 3 times. I don't know who his second wife was. He married Jeff Brannock's mother. They did not have children" (then who was Frances age two in the household below?)
Carolyn Spence has two daughters listed, Jane b. 1854 and Martha b. 1856 Both born in Mt. Airy, Surry Co., N. C. Whom I believe may be the one daughter Martha Jane b.12-April-1857 and died 2-Feb.-1914.
NOTE: If in fact he was married three times, there are possibly other children?
Between 1870 and 1880, Malinda has died and William remarried Nancy Brannock 10-May-1876. He is age sixty-six and Nancy is thirty. He has a stepson, Jefferson Brannock, age nine and a new daughter, Francis age Two. All the older children are in households of their own. This census taken 17-June-1880, by Wm. H. Wolf, probably a grandfather or uncle of the William H. Wolf, son of John, who married Susan Francis. He was age 68?? on 1870 census.
There is also a grandson John T. Carpenter age 9 in his 1880 household, probably John Thomas, son of Elizabeth.
Nancy Brannock Carpenter married 11- February -1897 Ambrose Willey therefore, William probably died between 1880 and 1897.
NOTE:There was a William Carpenter age 32, wife Henrietta age 23 and son Samuel age 7 months on 1860 WilkesCo. census.
In 1870 Wilkes Co. census William is age 42, Henrietta is age 30, and still only one child, Samuel age 9.
I haven't placed this William.

NOTE: According to Howard Carpenter, (son of Brady and Rosa Evans, Carpenter) the Lake on the Reynolds estate at Devotion was built on top of anold Carpenter family cemetary.
Notes for MALINDA LYDIA RICHARDSON:
Lydia was age 41 on the 1850 Surry Co., NC census. Died before 10-May-1876.(son John's marriage )
Malinda was age 60 on the 1870 Surry Co., NC census.Died before 1877.( Nancy's daughter Francis Susan age two in 1880)
Nancy was age 30 on the 1880 Surry Co., NC census.
Looking at Alexander/Elack Richardson, Ashe Co., as a possible brother.
Death certificate 4-October-1914 of Creed Carpenter, states his father was William Carpenter born in Surry Co., NC and his mother was LYDIA RICHARDSON born in ASHE CO.,NC
The informant was his son and her grandson W. B. (William Brady) Carpenter, who was fairly well educated by the area and time period.
Most of the family are buried in the cemetary at Saddle Mtn. Baptist church cemetary in Alleghany Co., NC
Albert, a brother to Creed is buried in the Snow Hill Burial Ground in Surry Co., NC
Son John Carpenter's marriage certificate, 7-March-1876 (John Andrew and Nancy Willey) states that his parents are WILLIAMand LYDIA CARPENTER.Father living, mother dead.
His death certificate ( 10-February-1915)states his parents were JOHN and LYDIE CARPENTER both born in NC. Informant D. R. Carpenter

Elizabeth age 10 mo. B. ca 1849Betty age 16
Albert age 16
Jane age 12
NOTE: There is certainly error on one of these census records, probably the 1870 censusrecord.
NOTE: Aunt Rosa Evans, Carpenter once told me that she thought that William had been married three times.
NOTE: If Columbus is the 1st child, and as was the usual thing in that time period, the 1st child was born the year following the marriage, they were probably married ca. 1837-38. William age 26 and Lydia age 29. Not impossible but unusual.
NOTE: I have at least the 1st 5 children born in Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC, The census index that I have, does not show a William Carpenter in Wilkes Co. in 1840 or 1850. Daughter,Martha Jane was born in Mt.Airy, Surry Co., NC
QUESTION: Are Lydia and Malinda the same person, or was Lydia wife # 1, Malinda wife # 2 and Nancy Brannock wife # 3? Elizabeth (Betty) in 1870 should have been ca. age 20-21. If Albert was age 16 there would be a space of ca. 4 years between. There is also a space of ca. 3 years between John and Elizabeth.
QUESTION: Where are William and his first and possibly second wife buried?
QUESTION: Where is the Snow Burial Ground in Surry Co., NC?
QUESTION: Was Lydia/Malinda a second wife and was this her second marriage, also? If so, were there older children, or children that may have died?
QUESTION:Why were none of the children named after William, Lydia or Malinda, or for that matter, after William's parents or thought to be siblings? Where did the names, COLUMBUS, JESSE and CREED come from?
QUESTION: Williams brother John was married to Elizabeth Lydie Richardson. John died in the 1860's. Could John's Lydie(widowed) have married William after John died? Were Elizabeth/Lydie and Malinda/Lydia sisters???
NOTE: William had a daughter, Elizabeth.
