Notes for Ira Harvey CUSHMAN: Ira Harvey Cushman, fourth child of Clark Cushman and Katherine Grout, was born in Barnet, Caledonia County, Vermont on Friday, May 16, 1800. He was a lawyer and settled in Fort Gaines, Clay County, Georgia. Ira married Mary Macord (McCorkle / MaCorkie) on Monday, April 26, 1830. About 1840, he removed to Geneva, Geneva County, Alabama. Ira died on Wednesday, January 26, 1848 as a result of a fall from a horse, while living in Geneva. “He always maintained the character of a gentleman and an honest man, whatever might have been his failings. Ira was noted in the Circuit where he practiced law, for his wit and repartee. Many of his remarks have become proverbial in that region. Ira was an active, energetic business man of an impetuous temperament and somewhat disposed to ideal schemes, which did not always prove to be of the most enduring and productive character. Such men are, usually, valuable to the public, but not so much to themselves. Without them our country would have prospered much less than it has. They are, therefore, to be ranked among the useful members of the community.” Quote from Henry Wyles Cushman.
