Welcome to the NOAH and HARRISON WRIGHT FAMILY HomePage.
I am searching for information relative to two African-American brothers who migrated to Texas from North Carolina. They settled in Bells, Texas (Grayson County), near a farming community in an area now called INDEPENDENCE SPRINGS (East of Sherman, off Hiway 82 near Blue Creek Estate). They were both mulatto and possibly former slaves or indentured servants. It is known that they established a farming community in that area with other former slaves. Moreover, it is certain that the brothers also established family in Rusk County Texas. In fact, Harrison Wright left Grayson County and settled in Panola, then Rusk County.

The 1880 Rusk County (Henderson, Texas) census showed a Noah Wright, age 46 from North Carolina, married to a Harriet (Hattie) Buckman, from Georgia. At that time, they had 10 children residing in their home: [Pleasant, Della, Cora, Noah (Jr), Tilman (my great grandfather), Dolly, Martha, Mary, Ada and Amous]. It is believed Ada and Amous were possibly grandchildren. It is also apparent that both Noah and his brother Harrison traveled between Grayson County and Rusk County on a regular basis since family members show Rusk County as a birth place. The same 1880 census (Rusk County) showed Harrison Wright, age 37, with a wife named Julia, who was also from North Carolina. A maiden name for Julia was not given. This census showed Harrison and Julia with 5 children [Noah (who at this time, is a different age than the Noah child of Noah Sr), Adda, Dee, Joe and Lena).

Of particular interest, on Noah's side, is the presence in his household of a family with the last name "Bruce". 1910 Grayson County records show two brothers, Melvin and William Bruce (ages, 15 and 13) living with Noah and Hattie. The 1900 Grayson County records show Noah's daughter, Ada BRUCE (b. 1876) in the same household.

In the Independence Springs community is a church (Independence Chapel CME Church), re-erected 1917 with the following names appearing on the foundation plaque: A. Freeland, W. Boyd, Wm. Reed, T. S. Bruton, C. N. Etchison, W. McKinney and N.W. WRIGHT, who I believe is believed to be Noah Wright. There is also a cemetary located near the Church called Independence Springs Cemetary. Unfortunately, the cemetary is located on land currently being used for cattle grazing and the cemetary is in poor condition and difficult to get to. However, evidence points to the land near the cemetary, at one time, as being part of a previous community with remnants of old buidlings, barns,man-made irrigation ditches circumventing the cemetary and old horse sheds.

Information that I have received from barely distinquishable headstones at the cemetary contain the following names: Geneva Campbell (b. 9/22/1912 - 3/7/1924), Birdie BRUCE Stark (b. 4/17/1886 - 6/15/1921), Will Campbell (b. 1875 - 1956), Beatrice BRUCE McDaniel (b. 3/10/1893 - 3/26/1924), Pickney M. Everett (b. 3/2/1855 - 7/19/1923). Neither the name of NOAH WRIGHT nor HARRISON WRIGHT was found at the cemetary. Although it is believed that there were graves which were unmarked. Nevertheless, death certificates show that the NOAH WRIGHT, born in 1836, died on 12/2/1911, at age 74 and was buried at INDEPENDENCE SPRINGS CEMETARY. The Peoples Undertaking Co of Sherman, Texas handled the funeral arrangements.

Any information about the Noah and Harrison Wright family, Independence Springs Cemetary, Independence Springs CME Church, the Bruce family of Bells Texas, or any of the names described or alluded to above, would be greatly appreciated. In addition, if anyone could provide information relative to the person or persons owning land buttressing the Independence Springs CME church, or cemetary, in Bells Texas near Sherman, would also be greatly appreciated,
