Generation No. 1

1. STEPNEY5 ROBERTS (STEPNEY DICK NED GEORGE4, MORRIS JR(3).3, MORRIS (2)2, MORRIS(1)1) was born Abt. 1799 in Mississippi, and died Aft. 1852 in Slave holder Joe Colbert. He married RHODA RICHARDSON. She was born Bef. 1852 in Mississippi, and died in Slave holder Joe Colbert/ Susie Colbert.

Notes for S
TEPNEY ROBERTS:
An on going search for the parents of Stepney Roberts has produced the following information. 4 Stepney's have been located one of which can be placed in Henico County, Virgina the same location of the Morris ROBERTS family. In the index of Roberts families in the USA, Ireland and England posted by Chuck Roberts. Morris Roberts is listed as having a son by the name of Stepney mother unknown. This Stepney has not been found in any census or Tax list to date, however in the 1762 Tithables of Chesterfield/ Henrico County Virginia, I find a Stepney, Ned, Dick (2), George, Jemme and others in the household and belived to be slaves (only first names given) of Edward Osborne. Although these listed would be to old to be my ancestors from the Chickasaw/Choctaw Nation it is belived by this researcher that it is much more than mere coincidence that these names are linked together. Also on the same Tithables list is the name of Morris Roberts, Enoch Roberts and Judy, Robin and Peter 5 in this household. Morris Roberts Jur. is listed as the only one in his household and John Rosberts is listed as the only one in his household. For the sake of tracing let me say that there were 3 generations of Morris Roberts (1), the first was born in Wales, England between 1665 and 1675, he married Elizabeth STEP in 1683 in Varina Parish, Henrico Co., Va, and died 1724/25 in Henrico Co., Va.. Their son Morris Roberts (2) was born 1709/10 in Henrico Co., Va. He died 1782 married Jane Pride and they had only one child Morris Roberts (3) born 1731 in Herico Co., Va ( Information obtained from Paur R Sarrett, Jr at world connect/genealogy/rootsweb). The first Morris Roberts was dead by the time of the 1762 thus the two Morris Roberts listed on the Tithables would be Morris (2) with child Enoch and Morris (3) living alone. What is of interest is Morris (3) married Unity Martin before 1756 yet he was living alone in 1762 with no slaves.Unity died c1773 in Henrico Co. He married 2 more times and die 1828 with 41 slaves.
The John Roberts listed was the half brother of Morris (3) his mother was the 2nd wife of Morris (2) Ruth Brummall b. 1737 in Henrico Co., Va.

A baby Stepney, whose mother is Rose from the Coast of Guinea (Creole), with brothers Dick (Creole), Renty (Creole), Basille (Creole) and a sister Peggy (Creole),
I must make note that baby Stepney was not listed as Creole.. This family was owned by the parnership of John Turnbull and John Joyce (Copartners in Trade... Negros, Cattle ect. certificates of copartnership was issued 2-24-1798). Information obtained from slave data posted by Arfigeneas. What is of interest about baby Stepney, other than the name, is that John Joyce can also be placed in Henrico Co., Va prior to this partnership.

For these reason and with some speculation I have attached the Morris Roberts Family to my known Stepney Roberts of Choctaw Nation Indian Territtory. Because it is doubtful that the Stepney in the 1762 Henrico county Tithables is the same Stepney listed as the Father of Ned Roberts born 1833 I have joined these families with a generation between the two. It is conceivable that the 1762 Stepney, Dick, Ned or George is perhaps the father of Stepney Roberts of the Chickasaw/Choctaw Nation and the first generation of Indian Territory Roberts slaves. My known ancestor Stepney Roberts named his children Ned, Dick and grandsons with the name Stepney, great grandson with the name George and great granddaughter with the name Jemena. The Turnbull/ Joyce slaves were in Spanish La. in 1800 when the death of Turnbull and Joyce occured, with some speculation these slaves were sold and it is believed, by this researcher, that Joseph Colbert of the Chickasaw/Choctaw Nation, purchased Stepney Roberts, Ned, Dick, Zilphia and Susan's father, sometime after 1822 as a Stepney can be placed on a ship in New Oleans in 1822. It could all be a coincidence but with a name like Stepney it is probably unlikely and with most slave research some liberties and speculation must be drawn.
