Norman Thompson, builder, had his "workshop" at the corner of CrossleyStreet and Little Bourk e Street, where Telstra buildings now stand.
N. Thompson, builder - 31 Crossley Street, 1929, 1930, 1932 directories.
note. Norman worked as a cart driver after his mother died when he wastwelve: he studied at n ight at the Working Mans College, and was capableof drawing up plans of houses and a Synagogu e (If I remember rightly). When he married in 1918, he thought about starting out on his own , and Iremember him employing men until the depression years. He had rheumaticfever when he w as fourteen or so, and this left him with a weak heart. Hedied in 16/10/1932.
When his mother came to Victoria, I remember my father telling me thathard work had killed hi s mother, who had to work in a factory makingshirts. Later she did piece work at home.
Crossley Street on the South side of Little Bourke Street was listed in1895 as having restaur ants, cabinet makers, wood carvers, houses. Namesshowed that many Chinese were cabinet-maker s as well as Australians. OneChinese was a fishmonger.
By 1921, cabinet makers were still in Crossley Street, but with theadvent of the motor ca r , there was a motor expert as well as motor panelbeaters and the Parish Motor Co..
We often went to the theatre when I was very young, and had lunch in theworkshop in Crossle y Street. I loved the sense of adventure lunch hereprovoked.
Often I went alone with my father, and I remember how friendly theChinese were to him. They w ould often give me a present of a jar ofginger (which I thought was to hot) and handkerchief s to take home to mymother. A Chinese cabinet- maker made the bedroom suite for my uncle andh is wife (Evelyn mum's younger sister) Rundell & Evelyn Pridgeon.UncleRon told me this a fe w years ago, and showed me the suite which wasbeautiful and very solid.
