| "What a Background!" "The next time you're feeling rather unimportant, try a little arithmetic trick based on the undebatable fact that it took two people, your parents, to get you here. Each of your parents has two parents, so in the generation just prior to that of your mother and father, there were four people whose pairing off and sharing love contritubed to your existence. You are the product of eight great-grandparents, 16 great-great-grandparents, 32 great-great-great-grandparents, etc. Keep on multiplying the number by two. If you figure an average of about 25 years between each generation, you'll discover that a scant 500 years ago, there were 1,048,576 people on this planet beginning the production of you." (The Rev. Gene Britton in East Point, Ga., Southside Sun, Reader's Digest, March 1992) With this in mind, plus the fact that the variant spellings of the name Exendine, it has been difficult to accurately trace our family relationships. At times the spelling within a family unit was different. This could be due (possibly) to the fact that some of our ancestors were illiterate and the spelling was as the person making out the record heard the name pronounced. Even today I get mail often in my maiden name with a wide variety of spellings. And mispronunciation is just as widespread as ever. |
