| I am researching the Yavener (Yavneh/Yavner/Yavnah, Shapiro, Levin (Lewin), Hirsch, Lewis (Lurie/Lurya), Herson (Hershon, Gershon)families of Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania; Rappaport and Cherkasky families of Kiev, Ukraine (Russia at the time. If you have any information that might be useful, please email me. I would be happy to share my information as well. All of these families immigrated to the US in 1880's and 1890's, possibly by way of England. The Yavener boys, Barney, Phillip, William, Louis and Jack came to the US with their widowed mother through NYC. Their father, Moshe Mendel Yavner, died in his early 40's from the flu. Their mother wanted to make sure that her sons would not be inducted in the Russian army. All of the boys, but Willie, bought farms in Connecticut. Our ancestor, Barney Yavener, married Bayla Shapiro and had 6 children: Max (our ancestor), David, Harry, Jeannette, Francis and Ernest (Johnnie). Max married Ann Rappaport and they had two children: Burton (Buddy, my father-in-law) and Elaine. Anne Rappaport's parents, Morris Rappaport and Bethsheba Cherkasky came from Kiev, Ukraine (Russia then). We have no information about their parents and beyond. Buddy married Charlotte Levin of Washington, DC. Buddy and Charlotte had three children: Lynne Yavener Gartenhaus, Barry Yavener and Lloyd Yavener (my husband). My mother-in-law, Charlotte Levin Yavener, was born to Lena Lewis Levin and Joseph Levin. Joe's parents, Morris Levin and Leah Hirsch Levin, had five children according to my records. They were: Oscar (born in England), Tillie, Jenny, Joe and Harry (all born in Philadelphia). Lena Lewis' parents immigrated to the US from Kovno, Lithuania. They were from a shtetl (village) called Shveksna. They also setted in Philadelphia for ahile. Their names were Charles Lewis and Rachel Herson Lewis. They had 6 children according to my records: Lena, Mollie, Anna, Ruben, Norman, Rose and Ida. We know that they ultimately settled in Washington DC as they are listed in the 1920 census for DC. Our information for my mother-in-law's family is limited. Any information would be terrific. |
