Find Family

"The Alice Powers Family Home Page."

Updated September 5, 2000

I am researching the Powers, Swain, Twiddy, and Gallop families of Tyrell, Pasquatank, and Currituck Counties, NC.
My great-grandfather was Josiah Powers of Tyrell County, Columbia, NC . According to the 1860 Tyrell County census records, he was age 26, and married to Martha Swain Powers, age 23. They had three children, Robert, age 5, Sarah, age 3, and Charles, age 8 months. The census records also state that Josiah was a mariner.

Charles Powers (my grandfather) married Nannie Caroline Swain in 1885 in Pasquatank County, NC. Together they had Martin Henry Powers, Madie Powers, Vedia (Weedie) Powers and Charlie Russell Powers (my father).

My grandfather, Charles Powers, died around 1896 and my grandmother, Nannie Caroline Swain Powers, remarried again in 1898 (Pasquotank County) to Zenus Twiddy. They had two daughters, Essie Twiddy Oglesby, m. Bennie Oglesby (Carteret County, NC) and Carrie Twiddy Parker, m. Vernon A. Parker (Currituck County, NC).

Zenus Twiddy died and my grandmother remarried the third time in 1916 to Edgar Gallop (Currituck County, NC).

I would like to hear from anyone who may know or who may be related to any of these families.
