      21. Eliza Minola, born Abt. 1821 in Plymouth, Devon, England.14; died 1881 in Chatham Kent England.

Notes for James Nathaniel Ellard:
Believed to have been in the Navy as a barber.
The occupation of James Nathaniel is shown as "Mariner" on the film of the original marriage entry record. The following year on the birth certificate of their son his occupation is shown as "Hairdresser". This is consistent with other information that he was a barber in the Royal Navy. However in the census records of 1841, 1851, and 1871 he is listed as "Labourer HM Dockyard".
He died, aged 80, and his death certificate states that he died as a result of an accidental fall on 1 April 1895, and thathe was a "pesioned labourer HM Dockyard". An inquest into his death was held in Portsmouth on 8 April 1895.

More About James Nathaniel Ellard:
Occupation: Hair Dresser

  Notes for Eliza Minola:
A family story had it that Eliza was from Florence, Italy and some family stories have her as Marie Manola. The family story speculated that James met her during a voyage with the Royal Navy. Sadly research has failed to substantiate this romantic story. Records show that James married Eliza Minola, not Marie, and that she was born in Plymouth, Devon. While the name Minola hints at an Italian connection it is yet to be proved.

Marriage Notes for James Ellard and Eliza Minola:
Married in the presence of Joseph Minola.
The 1881 British Census reveals a Joseph Minola, born in Plymouth in 1813 living with his family in Plymouth. It is possible that this is a brother of Eliza as she was also born in Plymouth. The Church of Stoke Dameral Marriage Register reveals that a Joseph Minola, a salesman, married an Ann Fleming on 15 June 1808 at Stoke Dameral, Devon. It is possible that these were the parents of both Eliza, born abt 1821, and Joseph Minola, born 1813. Either of the Joseph Minola's could have been the witness to the marriage of James Jathaniel and Eliza Minola in 1837. Further research shows the birth of Ann Fleming born to William and Mary Fleming and christened on 19 Jun 1785 at Stoke Dameral. Also in the Stoke Dameral records is the marriage of Baptiste Minola to Ann Tamlin on 27 Feb 1806. Possibly Baptiste and Joseph Minola were brothers.
