A brief history: Luigi Cosenza came from Cosenza, Italy to America at the age of 8-10 yrs old. It's not known if he left Italy with his parents, but he arrived an orphan and ended up in New Orleans, LA between 1861-1863. Whatever entity took him, changed his name from Luigi Cosenza to Louis Cassens (overtones of French & German). Luigi married Maria Albanese in New Orleans, LA. It's believed she was from Palermo, Sicily. She came to America at the age of 12 yrs old to see an uncle who lived in Algiers, LA. Maria married Luigi at the age of 14 yrs old, she was also known as Mary Cassens. They had eight children, and as they got older, all but one changed their surname from Cassens to Cosenza. Somehow, because of the handwriting in those days, the surname (for some family members) was written or read as Casenza, hence, the multiple surname spellings. |
