Descendants of Johann
Jacob Zänger
Generation No. 1
1. Johann Jacob5 Zänger (Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born abt. 1747, and died abt. 1800. He married (1) Eva Riehl 22 Nov 1768 in Wangen, Alsace, France1, daughter of Daniel Riehl and Eva Veld. She was born abt. 1745, and died Bef. May 1770 in Wangen, Alsace, France. He married (2) Anna Barbara Bauer 01 May 1770 in Wangen, Alsace, France2, daughter of Matthias Baur and Catharina Ort. She was born 1741 in Wangen, Alsace, France3, and died 18 Jan 1820 in Minderslachen, Pfalz4,5.

1776; died 04 May 1847 in Kandel, Pfalz.
+ 3 ii. Lorentz Zänger, born 13 Dec 1777 in Wangen,
Alsace, France; died 22 Mar 1837 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France.
4 iii. Carl Friedrich Zänger, born 13 Sep 17789.
Johann Jacob seems to have been the one son of Philipp
and Margaretha (Feuer) Zenger who left the home village in Alsace and settled,
perhaps around 1780 or so, in Minderslachen, a small enclave about a kilometer
or two north on the road out of the larger town of Kandel. There is evidence
that Johann Jacob’s older brother, Johann Philipp, also spent some time in the
Pfalz region, but he seems to have returned to Wangen prior to 1767. I am
presuming that this traveling may have had something to do with the
linen-weaving trade, but I am still looking for additional evidence.

2. Johannes6 Zänger (Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 19 Jan 17769, and died 04 May 1847 in Kandel, Pfalz10. He married Anna Margaretha Nuß abt. 1797, daughter of Johann Nuß and Maria Kolb. She was born 18 Jan 1776 in Minderslachen, Pfalz11, and died 03 Dec 1819 in Minderslachen, Pfalz12.

+ 10 vi. Johann Christoph Zänger, born 20 Jul 1813 in
Minderslachen, Pfalz; died 11 Oct 1885 in Stookey Twp., St. Clair, IL.
It seems from the data that I have so far that these
children of Johannes and Margaretha are the source of at least three lines of
immigrants to America prior to about 1850. I have not found any further record
of their second son, Philipp Jacob, after his birth/baptismal record in the LDS
Ancestral File. I have correspondence with a descendant along this line who has
research they obtained a number of years ago from a researcher in Germany, but
I have not yet had the opportunity to examine it.
3. Lorentz6 Zänger (Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 13 Dec 1777 in Wangen, Alsace, France16, and died 22 Mar 1837 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France17. He married (1) Maria Salome Seber 08 Dec 1796 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France18, daughter of Johannes Seber and Maria Siber. She was born 09 Oct 1773 in Westhoffen, Alsace, France18, and died 07 Jul 1821 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France19,20. He married (2) Maria Barbara Koch 22 Jan 1822 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France21, daughter of Jost Koch and Maria Fritschmann. She was born 22 Sep 1791 in Tränheim, Bas-Rhin, France21, and died 03 Oct 1844 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France22.

+ 13 iii. Catharina Elisabetha Zänger, born 25 Jan
1827 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France; died 27 Feb 1889 in Wood Co., Ohio.
+ 14 iv. Philipp Jacob Zänger, born 24 Jan 1830 in
Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France; died abt. 22 Feb 1894 in Dayton, Cattaraugus, New
York.
It seems that almost all of the children of Lorentz and
Barbara also crossed the ocean from Europe to America, except for the oldest
son Johann David. However, one of Johann David’s sons also came to America, but
later returned to Wangen, apparently after spending some time in San Francisco,
California, around 1875-1880. I think it is likely that he may have crossed the
country on the transcontinental railroad only a few years after its completion
in 1869.

+ 18 iv. Louise Zänger, born 24 Apr 1834 in
Minderslachen, Pfalz; died 05 Nov 1906 in Kelso Twp., Dearborn, Indiana.
This family arrived at the port of New Orleans on the
ship “Francis Depau” in December 1845. From there they seem to have taken the
great Mississippi water highway north and then followed the Ohio River east,
settling in Dearborn County in southeastern Indiana.
Of the four children of Johannes George Zaenger and Eva
Katherina Nuss I have only been able so far to find descendants of their three
daughters. There are land and estate records in Dearborn County that name the
son, Johann George Zaenger, with a wife named Elizabeth, but I have not been
able to locate them in other records in Dearborn County, or in census records
from 1860 onwards.
7. Johann Michael [Carl]7 Zänger (Johannes6, Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 04 Aug 180332. He married Eva Catharine Zapf abt. 1827. She was born abt. 1803.

I think there is a good possibility that this family
also emigrated, perhaps to the Cincinnati, Ohio area, but I have not yet
confirmed this.
8. Eva Catharina7 Zänger (Johannes6, Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 25 Apr 1807 in Minderslachen, Pfalz38, and died 1862 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH39. She married Georg Michael Propheter 15 Jan 1829 in Kandel, Pfalz40, son of Johann Propheter and Margaretha Weinmann. 34 xii. Georg Michael Propheter, born 03 Jan 1848 in
Minderslachen, Pfalz54; died Aft. Jun 1860.
I have been corresponding for several years with four
different descendants along this particular family line. Their contributions
and insights have been critical to helping me get a better picture of how these
different families settled and spread out after arriving in this country.
This Propheter family arrived at New Orleans in
December 1850, aboard the ship “Oxenbridge”. They also probably came up the
Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, coming a little further east than their kinfolk in
Dearborn County, Indiana, and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio.
9. Maria Margarethe7 Zänger (Johannes6, Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 07 Apr 1809 in Minderslachen, Pfalz55. She married Johann Georg Rödel 25 Apr 1839 in Kandel, Pfalz56, son of Georg Rödel and Margaretha Wagner. He was born 24 Mar 1811 in Kandel, Pfalz57.
Children of Maria Zänger and Johann Rödel are:
+ 35 i. Anna Margaretha8 Rödel, born 26
Jul 1837 in Minderslachen, Pfalz.
36 ii. Michael Rödel, born 09 Mar 1840 in Kandel,
Pfalz58.
37 iii. Anna Catharina Rödel, born 30 Jan 1842 in
Kandel, Pfalz59.
I think it is also possible that this family may have
immigrated to America around 1850, but I do not have any evidence of this as
yet.
10. Johann Christoph7 Zänger (Johannes6, Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 20 Jul 1813 in Minderslachen, Pfalz60, and died 11 Oct 1885 in Stookey Twp., St. Clair, IL. He married (1) Esther Margaretha Lepere61 abt. 1835, daughter of Johann Lepere and Anna Nuss. She was born 17 May 1812 in Erlenbach (bei Kandel), Pfalz (Germany), and died Bef. Sep 1853 in Stookey Twp., St. Clair, IL62. He married (2) Anna Maria Martz63 15 Sep 185363. She was born 05 Apr 1821 in Erlenbach, Pfalz, and died 24 Jun 1901 in Belleville, St. Clair, IL64.

44 vii. Eve Zaenger, born abt. 1848 in Stookey Twp.,
St. Clair, IL; died Bef. 1860 in Stookey Twp., St. Clair, IL.
+ 45 viii. John Zaenger, born 20 Sep 1851 in Stookey
Twp., St. Clair, IL; died 22 Jan 1934 in Stookey Twp., St. Clair, IL.
This family is probably the very earliest of the
immigrants named Zaenger to come to America. After landing in New Orleans about
1835 (still looking for the ship record), Christoph seems to have met and
married his first wife, possibly while still in Louisiana. He (they?) then
traveled up the Mississippi, and instead of turning right at the Ohio River,
continued on up a bit further north before settling on a farm on the bluffs
overlooking what would become the town of Centreville, Illinois. Unfortunately
this large family seems to have been tragically affected by one of the many epidemics
that visited 19th century America; there were several cholera
epidemics in the 1840’s and ‘50’s. The lone survivor appears to have been the
youngest son, John.
11. Johann David7 Zänger (Lorentz6, Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 22 Dec 1822 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France67, and died 23 Mar 1886 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France68,69. He married Maria Margaretha Vogler 18 Jan 1848 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France70,71, daughter of Georg Vogler and Margaretha Walter. She was born 25 Oct 1822 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France.

[Maria] Barbara and her husband Christian settled in
Perrysburg, Ohio, in the same area as their other cousins from Wangen. It seems
their young daughter must have died in infancy, at a location unknown to me.

This particular family has been quite a challenge. I
have the record of Phillip Jacob’s birth in Wangen, and then their is no
further mention of him in these records. I next find a “Philip Senger” in the
1860 census in Perrysburg, Ohio, age 30, married to a woman named Henrietta,
and with children Charles (age 14), Henry (age 10), Mary (age 9), Henrietta
(age 7) and Phillip (age 3). All of these children, except for Charles, are
listed as being born in New York. The last two children are, I believe, the same
as the first two children shown in the list above. The other children are
apparently Henrietta’s from a prior marriage.
The 1870 census in Perrysburg shows the same family as
described above, except that the older son Charles (about age 24) is no longer
in the household. By the 1880 census, however, the parents are shown living
apart; Phillip in Toledo, Ohio, with another former Wangen resident (Charles W.
Treuschel and family) and Henrietta in Perrysburg with daughter’s Frederica and
Eliza. The location of the youngest daughter, Bertha, in the 1900 and 1880
census, provided the clues that linked the locations of much of the remainder
of this family. In the Soundex for the 1900 census of Columbus, Ohio, I found a “Bertha Zanger” of the correct age. She
was the sister-in-law of Barney McConathy, whose wife Barbara matched the age
for Barbara, daughter of Phillip and Henrietta. Then while looking through the
1880 census on CD published by the LDS Genealogical Society of Utah, I found a
“Berthie Zanger”, a sister-in-law of Jacob Dersey, in Dayton, Cattaraugus
County, New York. Jacob’s wife Mary fit the age expected for Mary the daughter
of Henrietta by her previous husband.
Subsequent search of records in Columbus, Franklin
County, Ohio and Dayton, New York have yielded data that is consistent with
this family having lived in all of these locations. My hypothesis is that
Philipp Jacob Zaenger came to America about 1850, perhaps arriving at New York
City, but then traveling to Buffalo, New York, probably to take passage along
the Great Lakes route to Wood and Lucas Counties, Ohio, where a number of other
former Wangen natives had settled. In Buffalo he probably met and married
Henrietta (maiden name apparently Minnich), whom I believe had been recently
widowed, possibly of a man named Huff. This new family continued on to
Perrysburg, Ohio, however, they may have maintained some ties in the Dayton
area, which is south of Buffalo.
I still need to firm up some of these connections, and
have yet to trace several of the children. As for the eldest son of Henrietta
(by her first husband), I think that he kept his step-father’s name (unknown
whether any of them were adopted) of Zaenger, and thenceforth appears in
records of Toledo, Ohio as Charles Zaenger. This Charles Zaenger also left a
Civil War pension record and other records which I am still studying to see if
I can confirm this relationship.
