Notes for John McKee:

The "Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania" by John W. Jordan and James Hadden has a McKee family history describing the ancestry of Dr. Robert Sprague McKee (pp. 116-118). In this history it says that Robert Sprague McKee's great-grandfather was John McKee, son of James McKee of Butler County. John is described as having died in 1864 and is said to have "married Mary A. Crawford, and left issue including a son James". This James McKee was said to have married Catherine Miller. While a James McKee, married to Catherine Miller, is indeed the grandfather of Robert Sprague McKee, I can find no evidence that this James' father was John McKee. In the first place, the James McKee who married Catherine Miller, and settled in Claysville, Washington Co., Pennsylvania is listed as 33 years old in the 1860 census. His supposed father, John, is shown in his mother's household in Butler borough in 1860, at age 46. Not likely to be the father of James. Furthermore, I find no evidence in the 1860 or 1870 census of ANY children of John McKee. Also, the "Family Lineage of the Butler County McKees" by James A. McKee (the nephew of John McKee) says that John was unmarried. My own research and correspondence with other descendants shows that the James McKee in Claysville was the son of John McKee's uncle Robert Hoge McKee and his wife Mary Montgomery. This story IS consistent with 1850 and later census records, as well as other biographical accounts of the McKee families of Butler County.

Notes for James Cooper McKee:

A copy of the obituary of James Cooper McKee obtained from the Butler Public Library -

"Lieutenant Colonel J. C. McKee, U. S. A.

The sudden death of Col. James C. McKee, USA, retired, on Saturday Morning last was a shock to his relatives and many friends in Butler and in army circles. On Wednesday he was in his usual health and walked from his residence on Washington St. to the Court House and attended to some business affairs that he had on hand. The first complained of illness on Thursday morning and Dr. J. H. Pillow was called in. The doctor pronounced his illness a case of indigestion and no serious apprehension even felt. His condition on Friday was better and on Saturday morning he felt so well he ate a hearty breakfast in his room. A few minutes after 10 o'clock, while talking to Dr. Pillow, Col. McKee took a sinking spell from which he never rallied, dying in a few minutes.

James Cooper McKee was born in Butler May 18, 1830 and was the youngest son of Hugh McKee, who was a pioneer of the town and operated a tannery at the corner now occupied by the Berg Bank. His father served in a Butler county company in the war of 1812 and his grandfather, Thomas McKee, was a soldier in the First Regiment, Pennsylvania Line in the war of the Revolution so that as a boy, he inherited military tastes and a love for his country and its flag that marked his whole life. His rudimentary education was obtained in the old stone academy in Butler, and in 1847 he graduated from the old Duquesne College in Pittsburg. He then began the study of medicine with Dr. William Thompson, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and in 1852 he graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. From that time until 1857 he practiced his profession in Hollidaysburg and Altoona, Pa. and for a few months in Illinois. He first entered the medical department of the United States Army as a contract surgeon, but was regularly enlisted in 1858 with the rank of lieutenant. His first duty was in charge of a body of recruits from Ft. Leavenworth to Ft. Union, New Mexico, a march of 800 miles. The same year he was ordered to the Navajo Indian country and served in the Indian war in New Mexico until 1859. He was next ordered to Arizona in the Apache Indian war of '59 and '60 and had just returned to Ft. Filmore, New Mexico, when he was again ordered into a winter campaign against the Navajos under Gen. Canby. He did not return to Ft. Filmore until June, 1861, and in the meantime the civil war had broken out. Dr. McKee was taken prisoner by the Texas militia under Gen. Baylor at the surrender of Ft. Filmore in 1861, was paroled and was finally returned to Jefferson barracks, Mo. Soon after he was placed in charge of the rebel prisoners of war at Ft. Wayne and Camp Butler, Illinois. Having been released from parole by exchange, his next duty in the United States service was at Chester, Pa. where he organized a hospital. At the Second Battle of Bull Run, Dr. McKee was assistant medical director of Pope's army, and at the Battle of Antietam he was assistant medical purveyor of the Army, having headquarters at Fredericksburg, Md. after the battle. The next duty assigned to him was the charge of a hospital at Baltimore, and he was  relieved of this post to organize a hospital at Pittsburgh. In 1863 Dr. McKee was placed in charge of Lincoln General Hospital with a capacity of 3000 beds in Washington, D.C., where he remained until the close of the war. here with only a captain's commission, he had charge of a brigdier general's command, and 25,000 sick and wounded men passed under his attention.

At the close of the war Dr. McKee was promoted to the rank of major and sent to New Mexico as chief medical officer, with headquarters in Santa Fe, where he met with an accident. He was then transferred to Ft. Wadworth, N. Y., where he remained four years, became medical director at the Department of Arizona and afterwards at the Department of Columbia. He was transferred to Watertown Arsenal, Mass., and by heroic measures converted that pest hole into one of the most healthful posts in the army. His last duty was at Philadelphia, where he was retired in 1891 with the rank of lieutenant colonel for disabilities received in the line of duty.

Since his retirement Dr. McKee has made his home in Butler, usually spending part of the year in the East and in Florida. He was never married but in 1895 he adopted the children of his deceased nephew, George A. McBride, namely, Annetta, Mark, Thomas and Harvey, all of whom survive him. His surviving nieces and nephews are: Mrs. James Mann and Stephen Potts of Altoona, Dr. C. F. McBride, Youngstown, Ohio, Stephen A. McBride of Allegheny, R. D. McBride of Hemet, Cal., Isaiah J. McBride of Butler and S. F. McBride of Washington, D. C.

He was a member of Mountain City Lodge, F. & A. M. of Altoona; of the GAR Loyal Legion of Honor and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. His funeral took place from his late residence at 110 S. Washington St. on Monday at 2 p. m. The services at home were conducted by Rev. John S. McKee of the United Presbyterian church and the remains were escorted to North Cemetery by A. G. Reed Post 105, GAR and a firing squad from Co. E, 15th Regiment, N. G. P., where they were interred with the honors of war. Among the relatives and friends from a distance at the funeral were: Mrs. James Mann and Stephen C. Potts from Altoona, S. F. McBride of Washington D. C., Dr. C. F. McBride of Youngstown, Ohio, Stephen A. McBride of Allegheny, Mrs. Dr. T. D. McKee and Mrs. James L. McKee of Chicora, and Gen. W. W. Averill of Bath, N. Y.

The death of Dr. McKee removes the last member of one of the pioneer settlers of Butler. Butler county has furnished few men who have arisen to greater prominence in professional and military circles and none who were more loyally devoted to their country and its flag. He was a man of broad ideas, fine literary tastes, and had a wide knowledge of books and music. His library contained over 500 volumes and was the finest collection of literary and scientific works in Butler. It was always his desire to see a public library established in Butler and to that end he bequeathed in his will his library to the public schools of this city. Another bequest made in his will was characteristic of the man. He gave $2000 to the school board of Butler to be held in trust and the proceeds to be used annually to pay the expenses of keeping clean and caring for the teeth of school children whose parents or guardians are unable to defray such expense. One of the conditions of the bequest is that the board make the proper care of the teeth a part of the hygiene course of study taught in the schools. In the event the board fails to comply with the bequest the money reverts to his lawful heirs."

Notes for Robert Hoge McKee:

The 1895 Butler County, Pennsylvania history says of this son of Thomas McKee and Martha Hoge that "... Robert, who died on Red river, Arkansas, in 1847 ...". Egle and Lytle's manuscript of "The Descendants of Robert Hoge or Hogg of Tuscarora County, Pennsylvania" gives this youngest child of Martha Hoge and Thomas McKee as "... Robert Hoge [McKee], b. 1797, m. Mary (Polly) Montgomery of Butler County, and issue; one son James McKee, resides near Claysville ...". Fortunately, the 1850 census gives a very helpful listing of all of the children of Robert H. and Mary in the town of Freedom, Beaver County.

For an obituary of Robert, all I have so far is this brief death notice -

"DIED - On the 12th inst., at Natchitoches, Lousiana, Mr. Robert H. McKey, of Freedom, aged about 50 years."

 - Beaver (Pennsylvania) Argus, Wednesday, 16 April 1851, p. 3, col. 2

McKee" he gave the farm in Findley Twp. of some 109 acres, known thereabouts as the "Long Farm". To son S. E. McKee he left no further bequest ("I have already advanced and paid for him an amount equal to his full share of my estate"), except to forgive any indebtedness owed to his estate. Daughter Amanda was named executrix. After payment of debts, he gave 3248 dollars to be shared between his two daughters, with the remainder of his estate to go to his son Lemon.
