Notes for John McKee:

The "Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania" by John W. Jordan and James Hadden has a McKee family history describing the ancestry of Dr. Robert Sprague McKee (pp. 116-118). In this history it says that Robert Sprague McKee's great-grandfather was John McKee, son of James McKee of Butler County. John is described as having died in 1864 and is said to have "married Mary A. Crawford, and left issue including a son James". This James McKee was said to have married Catherine Miller. While a James McKee, married to Catherine Miller, is indeed the grandfather of Robert Sprague McKee, I can find no evidence that this James' father was John McKee. In the first place, the James McKee who married Catherine Miller, and settled in Claysville, Washington Co., Pennsylvania is listed as 33 years old in the 1860 census. His supposed father, John, is shown in his mother's household in Butler borough in 1860, at age 46. Not likely to be the father of James. Furthermore, I find no evidence in the 1860 or 1870 census of ANY children of John McKee. Also, the "Family Lineage of the Butler County McKees" by James A. McKee (the nephew of John McKee) says that John was unmarried. My own research and correspondence with other descendants shows that the James McKee in Claysville was the son of John McKee's uncle Robert Hoge McKee and his wife Mary Montgomery. This story IS consistent with 1850 and later census records, as well as other biographical accounts of the McKee families of Butler County.

Notes for James Cooper McKee:

A copy of the obituary of James Cooper McKee obtained from the Butler Public Library -

"Lieutenant Colonel J. C. McKee, U. S. A.

The sudden death of Col. James C. McKee, USA, retired, on Saturday Morning last was a shock to his relatives and many friends in Butler and in army circles. On Wednesday he was in his usual health and walked from his residence on Washington St. to the Court House and attended to some business affairs that he had on hand. The first complained of illness on Thursday morning and Dr. J. H. Pillow was called in. The doctor pronounced his illness a case of indigestion and no serious apprehension even felt. His condition on Friday was better and on Saturday morning he felt so well he ate a hearty breakfast in his room. A few minutes after 10 o'clock, while talking to Dr. Pillow, Col. McKee took a sinking spell from which he never rallied, dying in a few minutes.

James Cooper McKee was born in Butler May 18, 1830 and was the youngest son of Hugh McKee, who was a pioneer of the town and operated a tannery at the corner now occupied by the Berg Bank. His father served in a Butler county company in the war of 1812 and his grandfather, Thomas McKee, was a soldier in the First Regiment, Pennsylvania Line in the war of the Revolution so that as a boy, he inherited military tastes and a love for his country and its flag that marked his whole life. His rudimentary education was obtained in the old stone academy in Butler, and in 1847 he graduated from the old Duquesne College in Pittsburg. He then began the study of medicine with Dr. William Thompson, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and in 1852 he graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. From that time until 1857 he practiced his profession in Hollidaysburg and Altoona, Pa. and for a few months in Illinois. He first entered the medical department of the United States Army as a contract surgeon, but was regularly enlisted in 1858 with the rank of lieutenant. His first duty was in charge of a body of recruits from Ft. Leavenworth to Ft. Union, New Mexico, a march of 800 miles. The same year he was ordered to the Navajo Indian country and served in the Indian war in New Mexico until 1859. He was next ordered to Arizona in the Apache Indian war of '59 and '60 and had just returned to Ft. Filmore, New Mexico, when he was again ordered into a winter campaign against the Navajos under Gen. Canby. He did not return to Ft. Filmore until June, 1861, and in the meantime the civil war had broken out. Dr. McKee was taken prisoner by the Texas militia under Gen. Baylor at the surrender of Ft. Filmore in 1861, was paroled and was finally returned to Jefferson barracks, Mo. Soon after he was placed in charge of the rebel prisoners of war at Ft. Wayne and Camp Butler, Illinois. Having been released from parole by exchange, his next duty in the United States service was at Chester, Pa. where he organized a hospital. At the Second Battle of Bull Run, Dr. McKee was assistant medical director of Pope's army, and at the Battle of Antietam he was assistant medical purveyor of the Army, having headquarters at Fredericksburg, Md. after the battle. The next duty assigned to him was the charge of a hospital at Baltimore, and he was  relieved of this post to organize a hospital at Pittsburgh. In 1863 Dr. McKee was placed in charge of Lincoln General Hospital with a capacity of 3000 beds in Washington, D.C., where he remained until the close of the war. here with only a captain's commission, he had charge of a brigdier general's command, and 25,000 sick and wounded men passed under his attention.

At the close of the war Dr. McKee was promoted to the rank of major and sent to New Mexico as chief medical officer, with headquarters in Santa Fe, where he met with an accident. He was then transferred to Ft. Wadworth, N. Y., where he remained four years, became medical director at the Department of Arizona and afterwards at the Department of Columbia. He was transferred to Watertown Arsenal, Mass., and by heroic measures converted that pest hole into one of the most healthful posts in the army. His last duty was at Philadelphia, where he was retired in 1891 with the rank of lieutenant colonel for disabilities received in the line of duty.

Since his retirement Dr. McKee has made his home in Butler, usually spending part of the year in the East and in Florida. He was never married but in 1895 he adopted the children of his deceased nephew, George A. McBride, namely, Annetta, Mark, Thomas and Harvey, all of whom survive him. His surviving nieces and nephews are: Mrs. James Mann and Stephen Potts of Altoona, Dr. C. F. McBride, Youngstown, Ohio, Stephen A. McBride of Allegheny, R. D. McBride of Hemet, Cal., Isaiah J. McBride of Butler and S. F. McBride of Washington, D. C.

He was a member of Mountain City Lodge, F. & A. M. of Altoona; of the GAR Loyal Legion of Honor and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. His funeral took place from his late residence at 110 S. Washington St. on Monday at 2 p. m. The services at home were conducted by Rev. John S. McKee of the United Presbyterian church and the remains were escorted to North Cemetery by A. G. Reed Post 105, GAR and a firing squad from Co. E, 15th Regiment, N. G. P., where they were interred with the honors of war. Among the relatives and friends from a distance at the funeral were: Mrs. James Mann and Stephen C. Potts from Altoona, S. F. McBride of Washington D. C., Dr. C. F. McBride of Youngstown, Ohio, Stephen A. McBride of Allegheny, Mrs. Dr. T. D. McKee and Mrs. James L. McKee of Chicora, and Gen. W. W. Averill of Bath, N. Y.

The death of Dr. McKee removes the last member of one of the pioneer settlers of Butler. Butler county has furnished few men who have arisen to greater prominence in professional and military circles and none who were more loyally devoted to their country and its flag. He was a man of broad ideas, fine literary tastes, and had a wide knowledge of books and music. His library contained over 500 volumes and was the finest collection of literary and scientific works in Butler. It was always his desire to see a public library established in Butler and to that end he bequeathed in his will his library to the public schools of this city. Another bequest made in his will was characteristic of the man. He gave $2000 to the school board of Butler to be held in trust and the proceeds to be used annually to pay the expenses of keeping clean and caring for the teeth of school children whose parents or guardians are unable to defray such expense. One of the conditions of the bequest is that the board make the proper care of the teeth a part of the hygiene course of study taught in the schools. In the event the board fails to comply with the bequest the money reverts to his lawful heirs."

Notes for Robert Hoge McKee:

The 1895 Butler County, Pennsylvania history says of this son of Thomas McKee and Martha Hoge that "... Robert, who died on Red river, Arkansas, in 1847 ...". Egle and Lytle's manuscript of "The Descendants of Robert Hoge or Hogg of Tuscarora County, Pennsylvania" gives this youngest child of Martha Hoge and Thomas McKee as "... Robert Hoge [McKee], b. 1797, m. Mary (Polly) Montgomery of Butler County, and issue; one son James McKee, resides near Claysville ...". Fortunately, the 1850 census gives a very helpful listing of all of the children of Robert H. and Mary in the town of Freedom, Beaver County.

For an obituary of Robert, all I have so far is this brief death notice -

"DIED - On the 12th inst., at Natchitoches, Lousiana, Mr. Robert H. McKey, of Freedom, aged about 50 years."

 - Beaver (Pennsylvania) Argus, Wednesday, 16 April 1851, p. 3, col. 2

The last will and testament of Robert McKee is found in the Mercer County, Pennsylvania Will Books, v. 13. pp. 290-291. He bequeathed all the "premiums interest and increase" in 13 shares of stock in the First National Bank of Mercer to his wife, as well as a house and lot in the borough of Mercer. To son "Lemon E. McKee" he gave the farm in Findley Twp. of some 109 acres, known thereabouts as the "Long Farm". To son S. E. McKee he left no further bequest ("I have already advanced and paid for him an amount equal to his full share of my estate"), except to forgive any indebtedness owed to his estate. Daughter Amanda was named executrix. After payment of debts, he gave 3248 dollars to be shared between his two daughters, with the remainder of his estate to go to his son Lemon. Will dated 17 November 1898.

Notes for James McKee:

"'James and Catherine McKee'

James McKee was born in Cranberry Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania on July 27, 1825, and died in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania on February 11, 1895. He was the second son of Robert Hoge McKee and Mary Montgomery McKee.      He apparently went to work for his father in a wagon factory in Cranberry Township, and in the early 1840s he moved to Freedom, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, when his father moved his business there to make more direct use of the Ohio River as a distributing resource for his products. On a trip to the Red River District in Arkansas in the spring of 1851, Robert Hoge McKee was killed in an accident, the exact date and details of which I am continuing to pursue.      In the Federal census of 1850, James McKee is listed as a member of his father's household in Freedom, with occupation "Wagon Maker". On December 19, 1850, he married Catherine Miller, daughter of Daniel and Hannah Miller, who were living on a farm in New Sewickley Township, Beaver County, adjacent to Freedom. They moved there in 1842 - 1843 from Pine Creek, Allegheny County.      James and Catherine's first child, Margaret Ann, was born on September 20. 1851, and was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Freedom on January 2, 1852. She was followed by Robert Jackson McKee, born October 24, 1854, Hannah Penninah McKee, born in July 1857, and Sarah Jane McKee, born in June, 1860. More about these children later.       In 1859, James and Catherine McKee moved to Pittsburgh, after dismissal from the church in Freedom, where James had been an elder since 1856. They joined the 4th Presbyterian Church if Pittsburgh on February 14, 1859. In the 1860 Federal Census, their residence was in the 9th Ward of Pittsburgh City, and James' occupation is listed as "Works in Saw Mill". On 11 February 1862, he and his wife were dismissed from the 4th Presbyterian Church, and joined the Sharpsburgh United Presbyterian Church on April 5, 1862. Sharpsburgh is just across the Allegheny River on the north.      Apparently the saw mill and lumber business, because of a dearth of accessible and convenient transportation, was a rather mobile occupation, and the next stop in the family travels that I can find, was the admission of James and Catherine McKee to the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church (back across the Allegheny River) on April 9, 1864.       Whether there was another move in the interim between that date and the Federal Census in 1870, I do not know, but in the 1870 Census, James and Catherine McKee and their four children are resident in Pittsburgh's 15th Ward, and his occupation is stated to be "Manager, Saw Mill". On July 29, 1871 the Lawrenceville Presbyterian CHurch records show that Miss Minne McKee (Hannah Peninnah) and Miss Maggie McKee (Margaret Ann) were "admitted to membership and the sealing ordinances of the church".      On December 21 1872, the family joined the Round Hill Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, and "received by certificate were James McKee, Kate McKee, Maggie (Miss) and Ninnie (Miss)". They apparently stayed in that area until late 1874, when on November 26th, they were dismissed from the Round HIll Church, and returned to Pittsburgh, where they rejoined the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church on January 30, 1875. During this period, (1872 - 1874) Maggie married _____ Hillery, and this change of name is duly noted in the church minutes, although no marriage is recorded.       On November 20, 1875, James and Catherine McKee joined the First Presbyterian CHurch of Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, along with their daughter, Hannah McKee. Sarah Jane (Jennie) McKee joined the church in February, 1876. In a History of Washington County (Donegal Township) (Everts, 1882, p. 755) James McKee is listed as a Justice of the Peace as of March 11, 1876, and was reelected on April 9, 1881. On October 19, 1879, he purchased a house and lot on the north side of Main Street, Claysville Borough, and the deed was recorded on March 26, 1880. In the Federal Census of 1880, James Catherine and Sarah Jane are listed as residents of Claysville, with his occupation "Engineer".       Much of the rest of the story is in the obituaries of James and Catherine McKee, but more information about what James actually did in Claysville, as a business, during his twnety years there, would be most useful. ..."

Notes for Hiram Jeremiah McKee:

Though listed as a "quartz miner" in the 1880 Census, this likely refers to his participation in the Black Hills gold rush that began in 1874-1876. The southern portions of the Black Hills are in Pennington County, South Dakota.

        54.  John Carlisle7 Stewart (Nancy6 McKee, Jane5, Thomas4, David3, James2, Hugh1) was born 24 Oct 1822 in Mercer Co., Pennsylvania150,151, and died 1906.  He married Caroline McFarland abt. 1852.  She was born abt. Sep 1832 in Pennsylvania152, and died 1902.

Notes for John Carlisle Stewart:

From the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Knox County, Illinois" (1886) -

"Hon John C. Stewart,

claim agent and dealer in real estate at Galesburg, was born in Mercer County, Pa., Oct. 24, 1822. His grandfather came from the North of Ireland, settled near Fort Duquesne, now Pittsburg, and from there removed to Mercer County in 1800. His oldest son, James, father of the subject of our sketch, was born in 1797, and married Nancy McKee, in Butler County, Pa., in 1821, and by her had born to hime four sons and three daughters, John C. being the oldest. The father married a second time, thereby adding to the progeny three sons and one daughter. He was a hotelkeeper and mail-contractor and died Oct. 3, 1876.

The subject of this sketch was educated at the Mercer County Academy, and taught school a number of winters in that vicinity, and from 1845 to 1852 he was superintending a blast-furnace in his native county. From early boyhood he clerked off and on in a general store, prior to engaging in the iron-works, at his native place, and in 1855 came to Galesburg, where dealing in real estate has since formed his principal business. In the newer Western States he entered Government land, bought some improved land, sold, traded and in allcases handled his own property. It is not the province of this biographer to speak of the financial success of the subject, but in this case we feel warranted in saying that Mr. Stewart's returns have been commensurate in a reasonable degree with his efforts. Aside from his landed interest, he is a stockholder in the two leading banks of the city and Director of the Galesburg Brick and Tile Company. He has been three times elected Mayor of the city, to wit: 1859, 1877 and 1883. On the 5th of November, 1885, he was appointed by Judge Blodgett Receiver of the Galesburg Water-Works Company, and still has the property in charge.

John C. Stewart, our subject, was married at Westchester, Pa., Oct. 18, 1853, to Carrie M. McFarland, and the names of their daughters are Maud M. and Alice. The life of Mr. John C. Stewart really forms an important part of the history of Galesburg, and we refer our readers to the records of his various administrations as the chief executive officer of the city, for much that cannot be here treated, as it belongs to another department. In his political belief he is a firm adherent to the principles of the Republican party, but when in office he represented the people irrespective of party. He with his family attends the Presbyterian Church."

        55.  Daniel7 Stewart (Nancy6 McKee, Jane5, Thomas4, David3, James2, Hugh1) was born 1824 in Mercer Co., Pennsylvania, and died 27 Feb 1899 in Amador Co., California.  He married (1) Caroline [-?-] Stewart abt. 1849.  She was born 1829 in Pennsylvania, and died 26 Aug 1866 in Amador Co., California.  He married (2) Talitha B. Forker 1870, daughter of James Forker and Margaret Forker.  She was born abt. Sep 1843 in Pennsylvania156, and died 28 Aug 1911.

Notes for Daniel Stewart:

In the 1850 census for Mercer borough (Pennsylvania), Daniel Stewart , age 25, is enumerated with Martin Reed, an innkeeper. Following Daniel is Caroline, age 21 and James M, 5 months, presumably Daniel's wife and child. On the next two lines are two more Stewarts; J. M., a 21 year old silver smith, and T. P., a 16 year old printer. These seem to correspond to the Daniel, James McKee and Thomas Plummer Stewart listed in the McKee family chart as among the children of James and Nancy (McKee) Stewart. Nancy having died in 1847, James is shown in Mercer borough with his second wife, Catherine, as a 50 year old innkeeper.

Talitha's maiden name is taken from the California Death Index entry for her son Daniel. Given this and the Pennsylvania birthplace from the census, I found Talitha B. Forker in the 1850 census as a 7 year-old in Mercer borough, Mercer Co, Pennsylvania with her parents and siblings as given here. They were still in Mercer in 1860.

        63.  Thomas McKee7 Gill (Martha6 McKee, Jane5, Thomas4, David3, James2, Hugh1) was born 28 Mar 1831 in Slippery Rock Twp., Butler, Pennsylvania, and died 04 Jan 1920 in Lyndon, Osage, Kansas.  He married Sevilla Morehead 20 Jan 1859.  She was born 08 Oct 1838 in Pennsylvania, and died 11 Aug 1917 in Lyndon, Osage, Kansas.

Notes for Thomas McKee Gill:

From Margaret Hawley, President of the Osage County Historical Society, I received copies of several obits and records of the Thomas Gill family.

From the Lyndon Herald, 8 January 1920:

"An Old Pioneer Gone -

T. M. Gill and Family Came to Kansas in 1879 -

Thomas McKee Gill was born at Slippery Rock, Butler county, Pa., March 28, 1831 and died January 4, 1920, aged 88 years, 9 months and 7 days.

He was married January 20, 1859 to Sevilla Morehead and to this union eight children were born, two sons and six daughters, Robert Newell Gill deceased June 1897; James Stewart Gill of Topeka; Mrs. Hattie Rock and Mrs. Laura Duff of Lyndon; Mrs Sadie Duff of Denver; Mrs. Iva McSherry of Boulder, Colo.; Mrs Grace Howey of Montrose, Colo. and Mary M. Gill of Kansas City, Mo.

The family moved to Kansas in the fall of 1879 and finally settled on a farm 3 1/2 miles northeast of Lyndon where the children grew up and were educated and from which they went on to homes of their own. In the fall of 1903, Mr. Gill sold his farm and moved to the east part of town where he has lived for the past sixteen years. His wife passed on August 10, 1917 after a short illness.

Mr. Gill was taken ill with heart trouble December 11 and quietly slept away Sabbath morning about 5 A. M. Besides the one son and six daughters, he leaves twenty-three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

He was a kind and thoughtful husband, and honored and well loved father and a neighbor who was respected and honored on account of his neighborly acts and upright integrity.

Funeral services were held from the United Presbyterian church on Tuesday at 2 P. M., Rev. Tharp taking for his text Job 5:26, "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of grain cometh in its season." He was among the first members of the United Presbyterian congregation and helped erect the present church building and held the office of trustee therein for many years."

        90.  Decima Amanda7 McKee (David6, Jane5, Thomas4, David3, James2, Hugh1)194 was born abt. Mar 1863 in Slippery Rock Twp., Butler, Pennsylvania195, and died abt. 1920 in Detroit, Michigan.  She married Rev. James Thomson Black abt. 1885, son of David Black and Margaret Thomson.  He was born abt. Jun 1858 in Beetown, Grant, Wisconsin195, and died 07 Dec 1915 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.

Notes for Rev. James Thomson Black:

Tracking down "Dessie" McKee's husband would not have been too much trouble, I'd thought, given that his name was given as "William Black" in "The Family Lineage of the Butler County McKees" (1922, by James A. McKee and Anna McKee Halsey). With a couple of locations, no less (Piqua, Ohio about 1900 and Detroit, Michigan about 1920). However, given the head-of-household indexes available prior to 2004 for the 1900-1920 census, I could find no trace of a family for any William Black with a wife named Decima (or variants).

While poking around for some Showalter data (Dessie's older sister Ella married Joseph Baltzell Showalter), I happened across several pages at Ancestry.com that broke the wall down. Ancestry World Tree sites for the 'Dodd-Munoz Family' and 'Leggett of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England and West Farms (Bronx), New York' both contained Showalter and McKee family I had not seen before. The Dodd page, in particular, had a transcript of the biography of David McKee, Decima's father, that mentioned that Decima was the wife of 'J. T. Black' of Piqua, Ohio. Further reading showed that the 'J' stood for 'James'. Well THAT certainly helps, having the correct first name. Google searches on variant orders of terms "rev james t black" yielded few hits, but they were golden. An interesting one at a Delaware County, New York history site (www.dcnyhistory.org/bf1b.html) had entries from 'Early Bovina Families and their Descendants' showing children of Rev. James Black and Decima McKee. One of these children, William Thomson Black, had a uncle of the same name (Rev. James's brother) who had a biography in the 1895 'Biographical Review' (also at the dcnyhistory.org site). In this bio, James is mentioned as a 'Presbyterian clergyman in Boston, Mass.'

Sure enough, that is where I was finally able to locate Rev. James and Decima Black's family in the 1900 census, in Boston. And knowing that James and William had been born in Grant County, Wisconsin, made it much easier to narrow down the list of James Black's to look through. I then found 'James D.' and Decima Black in the 1910 Detroit census, as anticipated.

The moral of the story is: it sure pays to know WHO you're looking for, even when you think you know where to look.

Notes for Maria Antonia Baca:

Antonia Baca was the widow of Juan Jaramillo when she married Hugh W. McBride. After Hugh's untimely death in 1884, Antonia again married - one source gives his name as "Samuel Thomson". She is listed in the 1886 administration records of the estate of Hugh McBride as his "wife Maria Thomson". However, I lose track of Antonia in the census from 1900 onward.

Mar 1845 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. Jan 1920.

Notes for George A. McBride:

The facts surrounding the situation of George A. McBride are a bit mysterious, based on the census. He is shown at age 24 in Butler in the houshold of his mother Maria McBride and grandmother Margaret (Dunbar) McKee. Occupation listed as "livery stable keeper". In the 1880 Butler borough census, the household of Maria McBride is shown with a daughter-in-law Eliza Jane McBride and 3 grandchildren; these seem to be the wife of George A. McBride ("Jennie" Miller), with 4 year old Maria A., 2 year old George and 6 month old Thomas. However, George is not listed. The obit of the elder Maria McBride's brother, James Cooper McKee, states that in 1895 he adopted the children of his deceased nephew George McBride. This is why in the 1900 and later census, the sons are named McKee instead of McBride. However, Jennie (Miller) McBride, aka "Eliza Jane", is still living in Butler through most of this. In 1900 she is with a daughter and sons Thomas and Harvey, and is still in Butler in 1910 with son Harvey and family (and listed as "Jennie" McBride). In the 1920 census, at age 73 (75?) she is still on South Washington street in Butler, but not with her children.

Notes for Robert Leland McKee:

I have a couple of obits for Robert L. from the Toledo papers -

'"Freight Handler Dies Suddenly at Wabash House'

Robert L. McKee, 65, freight handler employed by the Wabash railroad, died suddenly at 6:45 o'clock Monday morning, a few minutes after arriving at the freighthouse for the day's work.

McKee was putting his lunch box on a shelf, when he fell to the floor. He was dead when his fellow workmen reached him. Heart trouble was the cause of death.

McKee had been in the employ of the Wabash for ten years. He lived at 1632 Erie street. A widow and several children survive."

 - Toledo (Ohio) News-Bee, Monday, 7 February 1910, p. 5, c. 2

and also,

'"Joked and Fell Dead - Wabash Employe Stricken with Heart Failure.-

Robert L. McKee Reeled and Fell While Lighting His Pipe'

As he was about to light his pipe after he had reported for work at the Wabash railroad freight house on Middle Ground at 6:30 this morning, Robert L. McKee, 68, of 1633 North Erie street, employed as a freight handler, was stricken with a sudden illness and, falling unconscious to the floor, died in a few minutes, before a physician could be summoned. Coroner Charles J. Henzler said death was caused by heart disease. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of Karl Matheis.

According to Willis Allum, 1636 North Erie street, who is also employed at the freight house and who accompanied McKee on his walk to work, the latter appeared to be in excellent health and was joking with Allum a minute or two before he was stricken. Allum said McKee had just put away his dinner bucket and was in the act of lighting his pipe, when he reeled and fell to the floor.

McKee is survived by his two sons, William and J. F. McKee, and a daughter, Mrs. J. C. Yanger, all married and residents of Toledo."

Mrs. J. C. Yanger is Mrs John C. (Emma McKee) Zaenger.

Notes for Charles Wilbur McKee:

I have the following two copies of newspaper articles for Charles, courtesy of the Seneca County Genealogical Society -

"Bloomville Has a Romance.

C. W. McKee, a prominent young man of Bloomville, and Miss Hershizer, of Cleveland, were married at Cleveland Wednesday. They departed for Florida, where they will spend a month, after which they will make Bloomville their home with the groom's mother.

The wedding is the outgrowth of a pretty romance, according to the story told by some of the friends of the young people.

Mrs. McKee is a professional nurse, and the two first met when he was ill in a Cleveland hospital. She nursed him to health, and later when the young man's mother was ill at the same hospital, she was the ministering angel who cared for the invalid. Under the circumstances an attachment between the two sprung up, which culminated in the happy affair of last night.

Mr. McKee is the agent of the Pennsylvania railroad at Bloomville, and is well known to many in Tiffin."

"Former Rail Agent At Bloomville Dies

Charles W. McKee, of Huntington, Ind., former agent for the Pennsylvania railroad at Bloomville, died Wednesday in Huntington. Mr. McKee was also connected for a time with the France Stone Co., at Bloomville. His widow survives.

The body is to be brought to Bloomville about 1 p. m. Friday for burial in Woodlawn cemetery."

Notes for Margaret Ann McKee:

" ... Margaret Ann McKee, the oldest daughter, married sometime in 1873, William Sanford Hillery, only son of Owen and Mary Hillery, who lived on a farm near Wadestown, Monongalia County, West Virginia. The couple had three children, James D., Lilly B. and Katie M., born in 1874, 1879 and 1883, respectively. In the 1880 Federal Census, they were living in Batelle District (37th), Monongalia County, where Mr. Hillery's occupation is listed as "Farming". With a gap of twenty years, because of the destroyed census of 1890, Margaret Hillery appears in the 1900 Federal census as a widow, living in Bloomville, Seneca County, Ohio, with her daughter, Katie M., aged 16 (born in West Va.) It is interesting to note that Margaret McKee Hillery's uncle, John Montgomery McKee (James' older brother), had also lived at this time in Bloomville, having moved there from Beaver County, Pennsylvania in the 1870s. ..."

        148.  Robert Jackson7 McKee (James6, Robert Hoge5, Thomas4, David3, James2, Hugh1) was born 24 Oct 1854 in Freedom, Beaver, Pennsylvania312, and died 30 Jun 1877 in Glenfield, Allegheny, Pennsylvania313.  He married Nancy Edith Sprague abt. 1873, daughter of William Sprague and Sarah McQuaid.  She was born abt. 1855 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1880.

Notes for Robert Jackson McKee:

" (V) Robert Jackson, son of James McKee, was born at Freedom, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, where his boyhood days were spent and his education secured. He obtained a knowledge of pharmacy, and established a drug store at Glenfield, Pennsylvania. He was drowned in the Ohio river while swimming, in 1877. He married Nancy Edith Sprague, born in Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, May 13, 1856, daughter of William Bradford and Sarah Ann (McQuaid) Sprague, of Allegheny county. William B. Sprague was a captain in the Union army during the civil war, later established a jewelry and drug store at West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, being an expert watchmaker and having a knowledge of drugs. Children of Robert J. and Nancy E. (Sprague) McKee: Robert Sprague, of whom further; John Smith, now an electrician of Cleveland, Ohio; Frank Wray, now an electrician of Beaver, Pennsylvania."

 - Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania (1912)

" ... One of the more puzzling aspects of this family story is the almost complete absence of information about Robert Jackson McKee, James and Catherine's only son. He appears in each of the 1860 and 1870 censuses, but there is no mention of him in any of the many church affiliations, no baptism, membership, or other. He is listed in the 1870 census with a farm family named Hutton in Lincoln Township, Allegheny County (just north of Elizabeth, Pa.), aged 16, and I assume this was a summer job. It also presented him, geographically, with an opportunity to meet Nancy Edith Sprague, daughter of William Bradford and Sarah Ann McQuaide Sprague of Elizabeth, whome he married in 1872 or 1873. This couple had three sons, Robert Sprague, John Smith, and Frank Wray McKee, born in 1874, 1875, and 1877, respectively. Robert Jackson McKee was accidentally drowned on June 30, 1877 in the Ohio River at Glenfield, and is buried in the Elizabeth Cemetery. ..."

Notes for Hannah Peninnah McKee:

" ... Hannah Peninnah McKee Bell is less of a mystery, since she apparently settled in Claysville, after her arrival in 1875, for the remainder of her life. She shortly married James McClennithan Bell, seventh of the eight children of Raphield and Margaret Woods Bell, originally of Buffalo Township Washington County.
