Notes for Samuel F. McKee:

Samuel F. McKee served in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant, and later as a Captain, of Company H of the 147th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Egle and Lytle's notes in "The Descendants of Robert Hoge" give the date of death for Samuel as 2 July 1864 and that he was "killed in Georgia on Sherman's March to the Sea". I have found additional detail, and correction, in the OR (Series I, Vol. 38, no. 2, Serial No. 73, p. 198).

The report of Col. Ario Pardee on the activities of the 147th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry reads as follows:

"On the 20th [of June, 1864] we remained in the position of the previous day until about 5 p.m. Capt. Samuel F. McKee, Company H, in charge of the skirmishers of the regiment, was this day accidentally shot and mortally wounded by one of the men of his command. Death ended his sufferings the day following. His loss is a great one to the regiment and to the service. Always faithful and punctual in the discharge of his duties in the camp and in the field, he had gained the confidence and respect of his brother officers, who feel that they have lost in him a true friend and an officer deserving of a more glorious fate. His meritorious conduct in this and previous campaigns entitled him to the high appreciation in which he was held by all who knew him."

This is all several months before Sherman's army marched into Atlanta at the beginning of September, 1864, and therefore also well before the "March to the Sea". This is also just a few days before the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on 27 June, so Sherman's forces are probably all within Cobb County.

There is additional information to be had in the Combined Military Service Record (CMSR) for Samuel F. McKee. He appears on a casualty sheet  as "Killed in action" on 1-3 May 1863, certified by Col. Charles Candy, brigade commander. These dates were during the battle of Chancellorsville, when Col. Candy's First Brigade was in the Second Division under Brig. General John W. Geary. A physician's letter dated 1 July 1863, however, describes Samuel's being granted a leave of absence due to a wound to the face at Chancellorsville. Perhaps the wound had appeared grievous, which led to him mistakenly being reported as dead. The CMSR file also has a copy of a letter written by Samuel, from Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and also dated 1 July 1863, to his regimental commander Lt. Col Pardee.  The letter reads -

'Dear Col.,

Enclosed I send to you Surgeons Certificate of my condition I have reported to the Adjt Genls office & unless ordered by the Adjt Genl to Annapolis will remain here until my head gets a little stronger, but whatever may be my condition so soon as I am exchanged I will join the Regt.

Notes for John McKee:

The "Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania" by John W. Jordan and James Hadden has a McKee family history describing the ancestry of Dr. Robert Sprague McKee (pp. 116-118). In this history it says that Robert Sprague McKee's great-grandfather was John McKee, son of James McKee of Butler County. John is described as having died in 1864 and is said to have "married Mary A. Crawford, and left issue including a son James". This James McKee was said to have married Catherine Miller. While a James McKee, married to Catherine Miller, is indeed the grandfather of Robert Sprague McKee, I can find no evidence that this James' father was John McKee. In the first place, the James McKee who married Catherine Miller, and settled in Claysville, Washington Co., Pennsylvania is listed as 33 years old in the 1860 census. His supposed father, John, is shown in his mother's household in Butler borough in 1860, at age 46. Not likely to be the father of James. Furthermore, I find no evidence in the 1860 or 1870 census of ANY children of John McKee. Also, the "Family Lineage of the Butler County McKees" by James A. McKee (the nephew of John McKee) says that John was unmarried. My own research and correspondence with other descendants shows that the James McKee in Claysville was the son of John McKee's uncle Robert Hoge McKee and his wife Mary Montgomery. This story IS consistent with 1850 and later census records, as well as other biographical accounts of the McKee families of Butler County.

        9.  David Logan5 McKee (John4, unknown3, James2, Hugh1)36 was born 01 Nov 179837, and died 21 Aug 1838 in Clarion Co., Pennsylvania37.  He married Elizabeth Boggs abt. 1829.  She was born abt. 08 Apr 1809 in Pennsylvania, and died 28 Apr 1886.

Notes for Elizabeth Boggs:

The widow Elizabeth Boggs McKee then married a man, surname Baxter, sometime around 1845. I have yet to locate this family in the 1850 census, and Elizabeth Baxter seems to show up as a widow again in the 1860 census, with 2 children, a daughter Sarah and son Jackson. Jackson Baxter, often enumerated simply as "J. B. Baxter", appears in later census in Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas. "Jackson B. Baxter" also has a affidavit in the Civil War pension file for his half-brother David Boggs McKee (and wife Cora)

"'Death of Thomas McKee'

Thomas McKee died very suddenly last Friday at his home in Plain township, aged 78 years. He was in apparent good health, ate dinner as usual, and shortly afterwards became sick at the stomach, and laid down upon a lounge to rest, where in a short time he died. He was a much respected citizen, the head of an esteemed family of sons and daughters. His wife survives him He was a devout member of the Methodist church. The funeral took place last Sabbath, the remains interred in Maple Grove Cemetery, Plain township."

"'Sudden Death of Thos. McKee'

Thos. McKee, an old resident of Wayne County, died very suddenly at his home six miles west of Wooster in Plain township at the advanced age of 78 years on Friday afternoon. He had been in his usual health and was at work about the farm. He ate a hearty dinner and shortly after became sick at his stomache being attacked with a violent fit of vomiting. He came into the house and laid upon a lounge saying he felt better. The family supposed him to be asleep but when they went to him a couple of hours later they found that he was dead. A physician was summoned but it was too late. It is thought that after the fit of vomiting the stomach filled with gas and stopped his respiration. In the death of Mr. McKee Wayne county loses one of her most estimable and representative citizens, the Republican party one of its staunchest members and the community in which he resided one of their best neighbors. The funeral took place from the house Sunday, the remains being interred at Maple Grove cemetery in Plain township."

Regarding his illness that resulted in his death this same record has - "records show him July 31 /64, Phthisis Pulmonalis and will not be able to travel in a less  period than 20 days; Augt. 19 & Sept. 8 /64, Phthisis Pulmonalis caused by exposure after the Disaster on Red River May 3, 1864, he will not be able to resume his duties for a long period of time if ever." Other records from the pension file also mention "typho malarial fever and camp diarrhea".

The "Disaster on Red River" mentioned above was the capture of much of the 120th Regiment by Confederate forces on 3 May 1864. The regiment had earlier embarked on the steamer 'City Belle' in order to be transported to meet up with other Union forces under Banks. However, the steamer was ambushed at Snaggy Point and run aground by the Confederates; only three companies of the regiment escaped capture. The remainder were interred at Camp Ford near Tyler, Texas.

Notes for James Harper McKee:

I had been struggling with the children of Thomas McKee and Sarah Smith for several years. Except for the daughter Mary, who married Dwight Norton and removed to Washington county, Iowa, I was unable to find census or other evidence for the other living children. In late March 2005, however, I received a query from Molly (Shannahan) Taylor regarding James "Harper" (not Hoge) McKee, born 1818 and also married to Mary Thomas.
