Descendants of Thomas Pope and Hannah Austin
Generation No. 1
1. Thomas4 Pope (Thomas3,
Thomas2, John1) was born Bef.
1726, and died 12 Nov 1806 in Henniker, Hillsborough (Merrimack), New
Hampshire. He married Hannah Austin
14 Oct 1742 in Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts1,2,
daughter of Thomas Austin and Sarah Lovejoy.
She was born 08 Apr 1722 in Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts, and died 07
May 1806 in Henniker, Hillsborough (Merrimack), New Hampshire.
Notes for Thomas Pope:
This family and
descendants are the so-called "New Hampshire
branch" of the Pope's of Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. As such
this Thomas is the son of Thomas Pope and Margaret Downing.
There is still some
controversy regarding the true identity of the English immigrant John Pope, but
the story of this great-grandson Thomas (4th generation) has been reasonably
described from the scant available records discussed in the unpublished
genealogy by Francis Lane Childs. Having left the Plaistow/Methuen area
sometime after 1750 [the drawing of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire
boundary in 1741 had put him on the New Hampshire side], Thomas must have
decided to take his family into the "wilderness" in the Connecticut
and Merrimack River valleys, eventually (around 1765) settling on a spot of
land just south of Town No.6 (a.k.a. Henniker). Prior to this he had been
briefly in Goffstown and Starkstown (now Dunbarton).
The oldest daughter
Hannah may have been the Hannah married to Sylvanus
Emery, but I am still trying to lock that one down.
There are no Pope's
buried in the regular listing of Henniker cemeteries, so I think I will need to
locate the old Pope homestead if I want to try to locate burial markers, ... IF
any still exist.

Thomas3, Thomas2, John1)
was born abt. 1761 in Starkstown (Dunbarton),
Hillsboro, New Hampshire19, and died 29 Feb 1848 in Derby,
Orleans, Vermont. He married Judith
Adams Sep 1782 in Vermont20, daughter of Thomas Adams and
Ruth Elliot. She was born abt. 1764, and
died 17 Aug 1848 in Derby, Orleans, Vermont.
Notes for Simeon Pope:
The story of Simeon
and Judith is fortunate to have details recorded in the unpublished genealogy
(at Henniker, New Hampshire) by Francis Lane Childs and also in the many
affidavits that accompanied Simeon's Revolutionary War pension file. An
affidavit (10 February 1847) by his daughter Tirzah
Willey states (in part) -
"
... that I am the daughter of
Simeon and Judith Pope and that my father Simeon Pope was a pensioner of the
United States at the rate of ninety six dollars per annum, that they were both
living with me at the time of their decease - that my father died on the 29th
day of Feb. 1848 and my mother died on the 17th of August 1848. I also further
state that I have caused thorough search to be made and that record or
documentary proof of their marriage cannot be found. I also further say that in
the year 1816 my father, who was then living in Morgan in the State of Vermont,
in a state of partial insanity, left the family and went to parts unknown. From
the time he left, his family heard nothing nor had any knowledge of him until
1824 and after he had obtained his Pension Certificate. He then returned to his
family and continued to live with them until his death. On my fathers return he
stated that he had had no knowledge of his family during his absence and knew
not whether they were living or not. ...".
A statement (6 April
1848) by Susannah (Adams) Blood recalls her recollection of her sister Judith's
marriage (in part) -
" ... I well
recollect that I saw my sister, Judith Adams and Simeon Pope, dressed for their
wedding at my fathers House, and that they left there to go to the Rev. Peletiah Chapins house to be
married, but I do not recollect whether I did or did not accompany them. This
event took place I think in the month of September, but I do not remember the
year, but I remember it was a short time before the close of the Revolutionary
war. ... ".
As to his war service
there are affidavits of Nathan Lee and William Ferguson of Sandwich, Strafford
county, New Hampshire (both July 1824), that state that Simeon served " in
the company commanded by Captain William Rowell in the second New Hampshire
Regiment commanded by Col. George Reed one year, commencing some time in June
in the year 1779 and ending some time in June or July following being in the
year 1780 and well knew him during said term while in said service, while the
army lay at Danbury, Connecticutt. Also while it lay
at West Point New York ...".

Notes for Ralph Pope:
I'm not certain
exactly when Ralph and Polly Pope moved their family from Vermont to Minnesota,
but it seems that it might have been prior to June 1858, since that is when
their oldest daughter Sarah married in Plainview. However, Ralph Pope is still
listed as a Washington, Vermont resident in a quit claim document dated 23
November 1860, wherein he surrendered his title to one and a half pews in the Universalist Church in Washington to one B. W. Bartholomew.
Then, there is the deed (warrantee) of January 1857 where Ralph and Mary Pope
are selling to Quincy O. Calef the family homestead,
(lot no. 14 in the tenth range), cook stove included, but not the 'blacksmith
tools' or a 'large particular block of granite'. So I guess I still don't know
when they got in the wagon and left. Possibly the older children went on ahead.

Pope, born 21 Sep 1831 in Washington, Orange, Vermont156,157,158,159; died 08 Jan 1880 in Oshkosh,
Winnebago, Wisconsin160.
He married (1) Marietta Nettleton 01 May 1862 in Pine Valley Twp.,
Clark, Wisconsin; born abt. 1835 in Ohio; died 24 Dec 1895 in Charlevoix,
Charlevoix, Michigan. He married (2)
Georgiana Hull 02 Dec 1877 in Pine Valley, Clark, Wisconsin; born abt. 1851 in
Wisconsin; died abt. Jun 1889.
Notes for Ira B. Pope:
The story of Ira B.
Pope is rather sad and still mysterious to me. Ira married first to Marietta (Maryetta ?)
Nettleton, the daughter of David and Alma (maiden name unknown) Nettleton in
1862, and then she was divorced from Ira on 19 April
1877. In later years Marietta N. Pope resided in Charlevoix County, Michigan,
where she lived near her younger brother David C. Nettleton (a well-known civil
engineer) and was a highly regarded teacher in her own right. In 1876 Ira, who
had been Clark County Clerk, was arrested for embezzlement. Then in 1877 he
married Georgiana Hull, daughter of (the late) George and Mary S. Hull. In 1879
Ira was pronounced "insane" and taken to the asylum in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin where he later died. The newspapers of Neillsville in Clark County
carry some interesting coverage of Ira's legal and financial troubles, but do
not give the sense that he was undesirable or an outcast, but more that folks
simply did not understand his erratic behavior. This being the 19th century,
the nature of his "insane" condition is only described in the most
vague terms, although a couple of articles also mention that he had a
"physical deformity that marked him for ridicule", without going into
further detail. I wonder if there may have been some relationship between his
deformity and his mental health condition, but at present I can't even guess as
to what it might be.
Patient No. 1330 -
In April 2001, I
received a copy of Ira Pope's medical record from the State of Wisconsin. He
was admitted on 15 Sep 1879. Brought to Oshkosh by Sheriff James Houston, he
had the following description - "Certificate states that this attack began
6 mos ago that this is the first - Began by being
emotional in his conversation - then became despondent - said that he was a
defaulter and could get no employment The disease is increasing - he talks
nothing that is sensible now - Has had no persistent delusion ... In office is
quiet and restless - wants to wander about - Is in good flesh and seems in fair
health". Further dated notes are "Nov. 5. 79. Has been restless since
his admission and very feeble minded. Looks and acts as though he had been
insane for many years. Has been taking food very sparingly for several days
past and today refused it altogether. Was fed by oesophageal tube this pm. Dec 14. 79. Has taken food in small but
sufficient quantity since last note. Is filthy day and night.
Was transferred to Ward 5-6. Jan 3. 80. Has been noisy restless &
disturbed since last note. Takes food in small quantity.
Yesterday and today has had a severe diarrhea. Jan 8. 80. Diarrhea has continued almost
uninterruptedly since last note, and patient has gradually failed. Yesterday
refused food altogether and died at 8 am."

Notes for Marietta
Nettleton:
"An East Jordan,
Mich. paper chronicles the death of Mrs. Marietta Pope, on Tuesday, December
24. She taught school here many years ago, and it was here that she was married
to Ira B. Pope. The East Jordan paper alludes to her as one of the most
prominent educators of that section, and says that she had charge of the
primary department of the public schools there for several years; that the
Friday before Christm's she closed the fall term with
a Christmas celebration, and declaring that she never felt better at the close
of a term. On Monday she went to Charlevoix, Mich., to spend the holiday
vacation at the home of a brother, and there died the next day, of heart
failure. Her maiden name was Nettleton, and she was a sister of Cyrus
Nettleton, of Humbird."

Notes for John S.
Hall:
The Vermont Vital
Index card for the death of John S. Hall states that he was from Rumney, New Hampshire. I've had a look at the corresponding
New Hampshire Vital Index card microfilm for Hall's in New Hampshire - there
are some Hall's in Rumney, but there was no specific
card for John's birth. According to the Vermont Index, John's parents were
named Edward and Betsy. The 1840 census for Washington, Vermont does have a
listing for an Edward Hall having a wife and four children 10 and under, two
sons and two daughters.

Notes for Hattie M.
Burnham:
I had thought that the
Hattie M. that Frank Hall married was the Hattie M. Cutler who shows up widowed
in the 1900 census in East Montpelier, but the index record corrects this.
Hattie married the year following Frank's death to Walter E. Granger, a
furniture salesman, and they both appear in the 1920 and 1930 census as
residents of South Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. It is not obvious if
Frank Hall and Hattie Burnham had any children.

"'Promising
Sculptor
William Frederick Pope
Had Done Much Fine Work'
The Boston Globe,
today, has this to say of William Frederick Pope, son of Mrs. Mary F. Pope, 72
Laurel street:
"William Frederick
Pope, one of the most promising among the younger sculptors of this country,
died on Sunday, in the Massachusetts Homeopathic hospital of pneumonia, at the
age of 41. Mr. Pope has been back in
America only since spring, and was working on a portrait relief of Mrs. Mary
Baker G. Eddy. He went to New York last week, on business in relation to this
portrait, and there contracted influenza which developed into pneumonia. Upon
his return he went into the hospital at once, and was there nearly a week
before death came. Mr. Pope was born
in Shirley in 1865, and as a young man was employed in the office of the
Manufacturers' Mutual Insurance company in Boston. He
had a great love for art, however, and developed considerable talent. He
studied with H. H. Kitson, the sculptor, and finally
left business to go to Paris and continue his study in the atelier of Julian.
He made rapid progress there, winning the Grand Prix de Rome in the Ecole des Beaux Arts. One of his early works, a bronze
"Breton Fisherman Drawing His Nets," received a great deal of comment
and won honorable mention in the Paris salon. He first came back to America two
years ago and did a portrait bust of Edward Atkinson, also taking part in the
competition for a design for a memorial to Patrick A. Collins. Mr. Pope had a studio at 2 Boylston place which was filled with sculpture of his own carving.
The first piece he ever showed at a salon, the head of a Breton peasant, is
there; his first "concours" - the head of
an Arab sheik, which remained always one of his own favorites - was also on
view, and the "Hauling in the Nets," too large for the studio, is
still in its packing case in a storage warehouse."

"The funeral of
William Frederick Pope was at the residence of his sister, Mrs. L. H. Hamblett, 72 Laurel street, at
11.15 a. m. today, and the services were private. Rev. E. B. Saunders
officiated. The pall bearers were friends of the deceased from Boston. The
remains were taken to Shirley on the 1.29 p. m. train,
today, for interment."

descendants in Clinton Co., and there are copious records of these families at
the Clinton County Historical Society.

Wilcox:
In the 1860 census
listing Luther is enumerated as 36 year-old "Wm Wilcox", with wife
Mary and sons Donn and Justin.
A small tidbit from
the 1882 "History of Fillmore County" (Minnesota), p. 603 -
"Luther Wilcox
was born in Canada in 1818, and reared as a farmer. He was married in 1840, to
Miss Sarah Glidden. She died in 1842, leaving two children. He was married
again on the 16th of June, 1846, to Miss Mary Ann Ricks, who has borne him five
children. In 1855, he came to Bloomfield, Minnesota, where he has since been a
farmer. Mr. Wilcox has been Justice of the Peace twelve years."
His obituary -
"Luther Wilcox,
an old an universally respected resident of Etna,
Fillmore County, Minnesota, died at his residence December 11, 1885. We made
his acquaintance in 1886 since when he was a continuous subscriber to the
National Republican, and a firm supporter of Lincoln Republicanism. He had
intelligent and decided views on "government by the people for the people,"
and believed in and supported the declaration of Abraham Lincoln that the
greenback currency was the best money for the people ever by the American
government. His death is a great loss to the community in which he so long
resided. It has removed from active influence a noble patriot who could not be
coerced into acquiessence in unjust and corupt political action. He believed in God and loved
mankind. His home was the abode of peace. Christian hospitality was one of its
chief attractions. Luther Wilcox deceased was an honorable representative
farmer of Fillmore county to which his death is a
greater loss than was the demise of General Grant. Luther Wilcox was a wealth
producer while Grant was merely a wealth consumer, one of the least valuable of
the American population."

106. Oramel8 Pope (John7,

Thomas2, John1) was born abt. 1830 in Henniker,
Merrimack, New Hampshire274, and died 24 Sep 1903 in Chicago,
Cook, Illinois. He married Amanda
Angell275 1852 in New Boston, Hillsboro, New Hampshire275,
daughter of Lorenzo Angell and Charlotte Angell. She was born
06 Oct 1835 in New Hampshire276, and died 07 Mar 1924 in
Downers Grove, Du Page, Illinois.
Notes for Oramel Pope:
The parentage of Oramel Pope is taken from the unpublished notes of Francis
Lane Childs on biography of Henniker residents (copy from the Henniker
Historical Society, sent to me by Elizabeth Pope). Under notes for the Plumer family is the following -
"vii.
Roxanna (called Roxy), b. in Dec. 1801; m. Samuel
Rollins (see ROLLINS). She was a
somewhat simpleminded and slovenly creature, entirely uninhibited in speech and
action. The older generation had many amusing anecdotes about Roxy, but unfortunately most of them are not printable.
Besides her children by Rollins, she had four who were born out of wedlock, of
whom she was not at all ashamed. The youngest were twins, who did not look at
all alike, and Roxy always insisted that they had
separate fathers!
Children
(illegitimate) b. in H.:
1.
Maria Tucker, b. in 1823; m. John Gove (see GOVE). Her father is said to have been 'one of the Tucker
boys from across the river,' and she always went by the name of Tucker. She
lived with her mother's family until her marriage.
2. Oramel,
b. in 1829. His father was Edward Smith. He was adopted when an infant by John
and Lucy Pope, and given their name (see POPE).
3. Horace M., b. 20
May 1832 (twin).
4. Wallace M., b. 20
May 1832 (twin). These boys were brought up by John Dow of Bradford, who
adopted Horace. Both went by the name of Dow. (see
DOW)"
I think this was
probably pretty racy stuff for early 19th century New Hampshire.

I found the following
notice in a newspaper while searching for Seymour Noyes on Ancestry's newspaper
archive in April 2006 -
"'Portsmouth Man
Drowns As Boat Tips In River'
Firemen today at noon
still were grappling for the body of Verdino Fred Sablone, of 68 Russell street,
Portsmouth, who was one of two bridge workers drowned in the Merrimack river, Goffs Falls, shortly after noon yesterday. The body of Seymour J. Noyes, the other
victim, who was 64 years old and of Etna, was recovered by firemen less than
three hours after the accident.
Noyes and Sablone were reported to have been
attempting to cross the swift-running river with two other workmen when the
boat in which they were seated struck a rope that was strung across the river,
tossing the occupants into the water. Neither Noyes or
Sablone were able to swim, companions who escaped,
explained. They were both employed
by a construction company that is erecting a temporary bridge across the
Merrimack river. Mr. Noyes was a carpenter and Mr. Sablone, a crane operator. Sablone was
born in Brazil. He would have celebrated his 37th birthday the 23rd of this
month. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Iolanda Sablone of Portsmouth. Several years ago he had been
employed by the John Iofolla Construction company of
Portsmouth."

Notes for Carlos
Caldwell Pope:
An extensive bio of
Carl Pope was published in the 13 September 1906 (semi-centennial anniversary
souvenir) edition of the Black River Falls' paper, the Badger State Banner -
"'Hon. Carl C.
Pope'
Within the limits of
the space given to the individual and industrial write-ups in this edition
there is scarcely alloted room to do justice to the
subject of this sketch, being one of the eminent attorneys of the state and a
man of exceptional literary attainments.
Carl C. Pope was born at Washington, Vt., July 22nd, 1834, and was
educated at the Green Mountain Liberal Institute at South Woodstock, Vt. He was
admitted to the bar at Chelsea, Vt., in January, 1856, shortly after attaining
his majority. He then started west, expecting to enter a law office at St.
Charles, Ill., in partnership with a cousin of his father, but finding no such
opportunity open he concluded to continue to follow the "westward,
ho!" movement and headed for Iowa. On the way he thought of some friends
at La Crosse, among them A. W. Barron, something of a business plunger and at
one time owner of Barron's Island, and changed his course and landed in that
village. He there found himself strapped and worked about six weeks in the
office of the clerk of the county board. Then learning that Johnson & Price
wanted an assistant in their law office, at Black River Falls, he came here and
entered that office. This was in March, 1856. After three or four months he
concluded to open an office on his own account. Thus he became a factor in the
destiny of the place, and has been in that factorship
ever since, except during nearly nine years in Superior in the nineties. He is a man of regular habits, systematic
in his work, extremely studious, quick of discernment and is possessed of a
very retentive memory. With these qualities he made himself one of the best
posted men, not only in the law, but also upon many other topics in this
region. In his fifty years of practice in the legal profession he has handled
many intricate cases in the higher as well as the lower courts, and enjoys a
state-wide reputation among the members of the bar. He is a powerful thinker
and has been the originator of many theories in jurisprudence that have
attracted interested attention among the wise ones. He has also found time to
give his literary talents play by writing much for the press. In fact he has,
right here, cultivated his rare native ability and acquired the qualifications
that would have graced the supreme bench, the state executive chair of the U.
S. senate. His talents have received public recognition in various ways. He was
district attorney from 1858 to 1862, county judge nearly a term, member of the
assembly in 1862 and 1863, and again in 1877 and 1878, state senator in 1864
and 1865, and was a delegate to the Republican national convention at Baltimore
in 1864. In 1865 he was chairman of the judiciary committee of the state senate
and also chairman of the same committee of the assembly in 1877. He has been a
member of the state bar association since 1877, and read a paper before that
association in 1898 on "Equity in Criminal Cases," which brought him
much applause and provoked much discussion among the attorneys on account of
its power of thought and ingenious conclusions. Mr. Pope is a member of the Sons of the
American Revolution, and of the State Historical Society, has been a member of
the celebrated Cobden Club for over twenty years, been a Mason for nearly half
a century, serving as Worshipful Master several times, and was the first High
Priest of the Chapter and was made a member of the Fort Winnebago commandery, Knights Templar, in 1867. He was court
commissioner for fifteen years, is a U. S. patent attorney, and was U. S. draft
commissioner for Jackson county during the war. As a lawyer Mr. Pope is recognized in the
profession as one possessed of exceptional constructive ability and as one who
boils things down and uses no unnecessary language, though he never wants for
words. His legal papers are always brief, but forceful and to the point, with
as much legal verbiage as possible and repetitions for the mere sake of added
volume omitted. This is a characteristic that courts mostly like in
lawyers. The Colonel is still
actively engaged in practice, and has a nice little brick office, excellently
located and as neatly and conveniently-arranged a suite of rooms as is often
seen in the country."
Only a few years after
this article, his obituary was published in the Banner -
"'C. C. Pope Dies
of Pneumonia
Passing of One of
Ablest and Most Distinguished Citizens
No Vitality To Recuperate
Burial Rites Under Strict Masonic Auspices, Attended Also by Many Old
Settler Associates'
Col. Carl C. Pope had
not the vitality to recuperate from the attack of pneumonia, as chronicled in
the last issue of the Banner, and passed quietly away last Thursday evening,
between eight and nine o'clock, aged 78 years, 7 months and 1 day. Thus occured the passing beyond of one of
our earliest settlers and ablest and most distinguished citizens. The funeral services were held at the
home, in the first ward, at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon under the auspices of
Black River Lodge No. 74, A. F. and A. M. It was strictly a Masonic service,
conducted by J. J. McGillivray as acting Worthy
Master, and there was no minister and no sermon. There was a very large attendance of
Masons, old settler associates and other sorrowing friends. The only relatives from abroad in
attendance were Mrs. R. C. Pope of Superior, a daughter-in-law; E. A. Le Clair
also of Superior, a former son-in-law; and Warren Moore of Rochester, Minn., a
nephew. Hugh LeClair, the only surviving lineal descendant, is in the U. S.
naval service, cruising with a fleet off the cost of Cuba, as an officer on the
battle-ship Georgia, and could not even be notified of the death of his grand
father so that the notice would reach him under a month. Henry and J. C. Pope
of Mora, Minn., the only surviving brothers, were unable to come on account of
sickness. Another brother, James, died in Missouri, only about two weeks
before. Among the old settlers from
abroad in attendance were Frank M. Immell and Herbert
Duxbury of Blair and B. Berg of Kendall. Attorneys Henry S. Butler and S. L. Perin of Superior, both former law partners of the deceased
at the northwesternmost city of the state, the former
being of the once successful firm of Otlin (sp?)
& Butler & Carl C. Pope, and the latter of the firm of Pope & Perin, came down to pay tribute to their former associate
in business. Among other attorneys in attendance were M. C. Ring and R. F. Fauntz of Neillsville. Judge O'Neill, S. C. Stockwell, W. J. Marsh, Robert Weeks and H. W. Klopf of the same city were also here. Miss Florence Wicklin of Chicago, a close family friend, was also with
the widow at this parting service.
Carl C. Pope was born in Washington, Orange county,
Vermont, on July 22d, 1834, second son of Ralph and Mary (Richardson) Pope, to
whom six sons and three daughters were born. He is of the tenth generation in
direct descent from John Pope, who was of the Dorchester colony in
Massachusetts, coming over the water in 1629. C. C. was the first of the Ralph
Pope family to come west, but his parents and the younger children moved to
Winona, Minn., in 1862. He
completed his school education at the Green Mountain Liberal Institute, South
Woodstock, Vt. He studied law in the office of Lieutenant Governor (?). P.
Kidder, at West Randolph, and was admitted to the bar at Chelsea January 24th,
1856. He then started west expecting to enter a law office at St. Charles,
Ill., in company with a cousin to his father, but finding the expected opening
there already filled he started for Iowa, but was deflected to La Crosse by
knowledge of the fact that an acquaintance by the name of A. W. Barron was
located there. At La Crosse he learned that Johnson & Price, who were then
practicing law at Black River Falls, would accept an assistant and he came here
and entered their office. This was in March, 1856, fifty-five years ago. Some three or four months latter he opened a law office for
himself, and except for nine years in Superior had been steadily in the
practice of that profession here up to six days before his death. Mr. Pope's advent in Black River Falls
anti dates that of the Banner by a few months, and he was among those who were
instrumental in starting the paper, did much of the writing for it on its start
and had been a frequent contributor to its columns ever since. Probably the Banner cannot, at this
time, do better than quote what it said of him in its golden anniversary
editions, in 1906, as follows: (quote
from above 13 September 1906 article, starting from 'He is a man of regular
habits ...' verbatim to 'That is a characteristic that courts mostly like in
lawyers.') Mr. Pope was married in
this city on August 10th, 1859, to Miss Etta M. Hitchcock, who is a native of
Troy, N. Y., daughter of Captain James Hitchcock, and who now survives him. One
daughter and one son were born to them - Eugenia and Ralph C. The former became
Mrs. E. A. LeClair, and died in 1885, leaving one son, Hugh, heretofore
mentioned. Ralph lived to become a partner with his father, but died a number
of years ago while thus serving."

Notes for Ellen M.
Hitchcock:
"'Mrs. Carl C.
Pope Passes Away'
Mrs. Carl C. Pope, one
of the oldest residents of the city and county, passed away at the home of Mrs.
Kate Vance on Monday, December 30, 1929, lacking only a few months of being
ninety years of age. Mrs. Pope
retained her remarkable vitality until about six weeks ago. She became quite
ill, and was scarcely recovered when she suffered a severe attack of shingles.
From that she also rallied, but her strength was so exhausted that when she
again became ill, last week, her physicians held out no hope of her again
leaving her bed. She continued to fail until death released her suffering Sunday
night at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Pope came
to this city as the bride of the late Col. C. C. Pope, to whom she was married
on August 10, 1859. He was then gaining prominence as a lawyer and man of
affairs, and he had erected the home on the hill to which he brought his bride,
after a long wedding journey from West Troy, New York, by the slow methods of
travel common to that earlier period. She continued to make her home there
until a few years ago, when her advanced years compelled her to relinquish household
responsibilities. She has since been tenderly cared for by Mrs. Lida Sprester and Mrs. Vance.
Colonel Pope died on February 23, 1911.
Two children were born to them, a daughter Eugenia, later Mrs. Edgar A.
Le Clair, and a son, Ralph C. Pope. The daughter died in 1885, leaving one son,
Commander Le Clair, of the United States navy, now the naval attache of the American embassy at Paris. The son, Ralph,
who was engaged in practice with his father, died about twenty years ago. Mrs. Pope had a charming personality and
for many years she was an active participant in the social affairs of the city.
Her husband gained a state-wide reputation as a lawyer and orator, and he
served many terms in the Wisconsin legislature. She was his faithful helpmate
and shared in the pleasures and honors of his prominence. She was fondly regarded by the many who
knew her. She was kindly and considerate of others, always of a cheerful
manner, and during her seventy years in the community she was favorably known
to nearly all its people. Though she suffered great sorrow in the death of her
children and later of her husband, her declining years were marked by her
continued interest in her friends and her home city. The funeral services will be held
tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Kate Vance, Rev. W. H. Penn
officiating. Interment will be made at Riverside."

of Captain and Mrs. James Hitchcock. She was born May 1, 1840, and was reared
to womanhood at West Troy, New York. Her father was a captain for many years of
one of the steamers plying between Troy and New York City. She was united in marriage on August 10,
1859, to the late Col. Carl C. Pope, who brought her as a bride to this city,

Ralph passed on about twenty years ago. One grandson, Commander Le Clair, of
the United States Navy, survives. He is now the naval attache
of the American embassy at Paris.
Mrs. Pope was held in the highest regard by a wide circle of friends for
her many endearing qualities. Mrs.
Winslow and Mrs. Ida Knobloch, of Eau Claire, and
Miss Georgia Le Claire, of Superior, were those who came from away to attend
her funeral."

"'DIED'
LeClair. - At her home in this city, Monday evening, November
16, Mrs. Genia LeClair, wife of E. A. LeClair, aged
24 years. The circle of friends that
but a few weeks ago rejoiced with the parents at the birth of a son, now mourns
in deepest sorrow the death of the mother. The young wife thus suddenly and
unexpectedly called from husband and child, kindred and friends, was born and
grew up in this city, and was well known throughout the community, especially
among the younger people, leaving many friends to join in sincere sorrow at the
sad tidings. She graduated from the high school in 1879. Her marriage took
place September 26, 1883. Her child was born October 21, 1885. Her death was an
unlooked-for shock, her condition not having been regarded as
at all critical. The funeral was held from the residence of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C. C. Pope, yesterday morning, Rev. W. H. H. Ross conducting the sad
services in the presence of a large gathering of friends. Death is seldom other than a most
unwelcome visitor. But it is especially difficult to realize the result of its
work and become in any measure reconciled to it in a case like this; the life
of the departed one was spared until bound to the earth by the strongest of
mortal ties, closely interwoven with the lives of others, and still the
dreadful summons has come while yet so much of life seemed to lie in the
future, which offered so much to live for. No human aid can lessen the grief of
the afflicted ones, but their burden is shared by many sympathizing
friends."

in that city on Thursday, February 21, 1929, at the age of 72 years. The
funeral services were held from the Masonic Temple at Superior on Saturday
afternoon, Rev. R. Ernest Bayles officiating.
Interment was made at Greenwood cemetery.
Mr. LeClair had been in ill health for a year or more. He was born in Colden,
New York, on July 17, 1856, son of Mr. and Mrs. Algeroy
Le Clair. The family came to this city in 1862, and the father was a prominent
business man here for thirty years.
Mr. Le Clair graduated from the Black River Falls high school with its
first class in 1876. Later he entered the office of the late William T. Price
as bookkeeper and office manager, continuing in that capacity until 1888. West
Superior was then undergoing extensive development, and he went to that city,
which had since been his home. He was engaged in the real estate business ever
since locating in that city. He was
married in this city to Miss Eugenia Pope, daughter of Mrs. and the late Hon.
Carl C. Pope, in September, 1885. One son, Commander Hugh B. LeClair, of the
United States Navy, now naval attache of the U. S.
embassy at Paris, was born to their union.
He was later married to Miss Sadie Reddington,
who now survives him, with two sons, Lawrence G. Le Clair, of Superior, and A.
R. Le Clair, of Memphis, Tennessee, and one daughter, Howard Cox, of Superior.
He also leaves one sister, Miss Georgia LeClair, of Superior, and one brother,
A. P. LeClair, of Missoula, Montana. Mr. LeClair became a member of the Masonic
orders in this city, afterward transferring his membership to the lodges at
Superior. He was a man of excellent
business ability, and from his young manhood he was identified with large
business transactions. Entering the business world at Superior, when that city
was undergoing its great expansion, he was among its leading its leading
citizens for many years. He always
was a public spirited citizen, and he was a participant in the larger affairs
of Superior. During the World war he rendered valuable service on the selective
service board. Of a genial
personality, he made many friends, and his interest in them was loyal and
lasting. He was a kindly man, generous and approachable, and among all his
associations he had [photcopy line illegible]. He was
devoted to his family and a friendly neighbor. Mr. Le Clair was always fondly remembered
by his many friends in this city, and their sincere sympathy goes out to his
family and relatives in their bereavement."

Notes for Ralph Carl
Pope:
"'The Late Ralph
Carl Pope'
In accordance with
announcement the funeral services of Ralph C. Pope were held at the house
Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, under the auspices of Black River Lodge No.
74, A. F. & A. M., conducted by C. M. Marsh of Neillsville. There were no
preaching services. There was a long line of Masons and Modern Woodmen in
attendance at the funeral to take part in the services there and follow the
remains to the city cemetery to there assist in the performance of the last sad
rites in tribute to a departed comrade of eminent worth. There were also many
friends in attendance and would have been many more but for the stormy
conditions of the weather and inadequacy of the house to accomodate
a crowd. The large array of
beautiful floral tributes included a harp-shaped device by the members of the
city orchestra, pillows by the Masonic, Modern Woodmen and Knights of Pythias lodges of this city, the K. of P. lodge of
Superior, to which he formerly belonged, and numerous similar tributes by
personal friends. Messrs. F. M.
Taylor and F. W. Werner and Misses Margaret Price and Irma Greenlee did the
singing and the following Masons acted as pallbearers: C. F. Hille, W. F. Maddocks, F. F. Oderbolz, F. M. Taylor and Frank Johnson, of this city, and
Mr. Kellogg, of Minneapolis. Ralph
Carl Pope was born in this city March 16th, 1867, son of Carl C. and Mrs. Ellen
M. Hitchcock Pope, and
died here, at his home in the first ward, on the afternoon of
Wednesday, March 15th, 1905, of septicemia, after an illness of only two weeks.
He thus lacked just one day of being 38 years of age. He was reared in this
city, educated in our city schools and here studied law in the office of his
father. He was serving as city clerk when his father concluded to and did open
a law office in the then marvelously promising city of Superior, and in 1892
resigned this office to also cast his lot in the "city of destiny" at
the head of the lakes. In the fall of the same year he was there admitted to
the bar upon application therefore before Judge Marshall. After that he clerked
several years in the law offices with which his father was connected, and in
1897 became a partner with his father and H. L. Perrin in the law firm of Pope & Perrin. Two years later he and his father
returned here and opened an office under the firm name of Pope
& Pope, continuing in the practice up to this time with success in
keeping with the field. He had a popular standing with the people of Superior,
and at the time he left there was holding membership on the fire and police
commission, which he resigned to return to his old home. The deceased did not make any pretense as
a trial lawyer. In fact, his father and partner being one of the best court
lawyers in this section he never felt the necessity of fitting himself in that
line. He was a systematic and painstaking office attorney, however, and he and
his father worked well together, so that few law firms had their work always so
well in hand as had Pope & Pope. Ralph was a man of fine presence and ready
wit and always ranked among the favorites in any society he entered. He was a
fine musician, being a good singer and an expert cornet player. He has been a
member of the city orchestra since its organization. Besides being an honored
member of the fraternal orders above mentioned he was also a member of the
State Bar Association and of the Sons of the American Revolution, one of his
forefathers having fought in the revolutionary war. On June 3rd, 1896, Mr. Pope was married
at Superior to Miss Mary A. Gowling, at a double
wedding, at the magnificent home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Pattison,
uncle and aunt of the two brides. The other bride was Miss Eva I. Thayer and
the groom Francis C. Hamen. Not long afterwards Mr. Hamen was drowned.
The following relatives and friends from abroad were in attendance at
the funeral: J. C. and Wm. H. Pope of Mora, Minn., uncles; Hugh H. LeClair
Superior, a nephew; Mrs. Edna Marshall of Plainview, Minn., a cousin; W. E. Gowling of Duluth, brother of Mrs. Pope; Mrs. Martin Pattison of Superior, aunt of Mrs. Pope; Mrs Eva Niles of Duluth (fromerly
Mrs. Hamen) cousin of Mrs. Pope; Miss Florence Wicklin of Chicago, lifelong friend of the family; Wm. M.
Kellogg of Minneapolis, who was fire chief at Superior at the time that the
deceased was a member of the fire and police commission there. Judge O'Neill
and several attorneys from Neillsville were also present. The aging parents, who have thus lost
their only hope in their declining years, and the widow, who is thus left
alone, have the most heartfelt sympathy of a sorrowing community."

Notes for Mary A. Gowling:
Ralph Pope and Mary Gowling were married in the home of Superior, Wisconsin
mayor Martin Pattison -
"Hymen's Bells,
Their Music Will Fill a
Scene of Surpassing Beauty at "Fairlawn" This Afternoon,
At
the Union of the Misses Gowling and Thayer to Messrs.
Pope and Hamen.'
"Thrice happy
they, the happiest of their kind!,
When gentle stars
unite, and in one fate
Their hearts, their
fortunes and their beings blend!"
One of the most
elaborate social functions of the season will occur at "Fairlawn,"
the home of mayor and Mrs. Martin Pattison at 5:30
this afternoon, the occasion being the marriage of their nieces, Miss Mary Ann Gowling to Mr. Ralph C. Pope and Miss Eva Irene Thayer to
Mr. Francis Clark Hamen, all of this city. Only the
relatives and immediate friends will witness the marriage ceremony. "Fairlawn" never looked so beautiful as when its spacious apartments were decked
with flowers and foliage and arranged for this evening's event. Palms and many
rare plants from the conservatory filled the many niches and corners, while an
exquisite bunch of Jacqueminot roses stood upon the
hall table. The parlor is decorated with pink and white roses and smilax in
festoons over the mantle, the music room with white and yellow flowers, while
the reception room and library beyond present a most effective picture with
American beauties and other beautiful flowers amidst the green foliage of the
potted plants. At 5:30 the sweet
strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march will come from the music room, Mr. Pattison with his two nieces, preceded by his two little
daughters carrying baskets of flowers will march down the front stairway. They
will be met at the alcove in the parlor by the two grooms. The ceremony will be
performed under a curtain of smilax, between the draperies of which hangs an
exquisite bell of delicate flowers. The solemn Episcopal marriage service will
be pronounced by Rev. M. Barton of the Church of the Redeemer. Soft music, an
impromptu by Prof. Wells, will add impressiveness to the occasion. The brides will be given away by their
uncle, Mayor Pattison, and they will look beautiful
in their gowns of gloris silk. Miss Gowling's dress is trimmed with pearl ornaments and she
will carry a handkerchief of lace, one hundred and fifty years old. Miss
Thayer's gown is trimmed with honiton lace, while she
will carry a lace handkerchief carried by a great aunt upon a similar occasion
in England. As the ceremony closes,
Lohengrin's Bridal Chorus will echo through the
rooms. After congratulations by the bridal party, the company will be invited
to the dancing room upon the third floor which has been converted into a
temporary dining hall. The tables are set in the form of the letter E, and present
a most dainty appearance, with apple-blossoms and pink candlesticks used as
decorations. A supper consisting of croquettes, cold meats, Saratoga chips,
salads, jellies, finger-rolls, olives, salted almonds, ice cream and
strawberries will be served to about fifty guests. The brides will cut the wedding cake.
After supper the doors will
be thrown open into the billiard room where the guests may admire
the numerous gifts of silver, cut glass, rare China, pictures, beautiful
embroidery, linen, etc. The Reception. Shortly after 8 p. m., the guests will
arrive for the reception, and as they pass down the from the dias they will be received by Mr. and Mrs. Pattison, Mrs. Gowling, Mr. and
Mrs. Pope, and Mrs. Hamen. From there they will pass
to the parlor where congratulations will be extended to the happy couples. Alexander's orchestra will furnish music
for the occasion. Refreshments will be served in the dining room which is
decorated with climbing asparagus, festooned from the chandelier to the corners
of the table, the table being strewn with pink carnations and the pink and
white effect will be further carried out by pink candles, white and pink ribbon
candles and vases of pink roses. Mrs. Bell will preside at the table, assisted
by Miss Lou Hicks. Refreshments consisting of ices, cake, coffee and chocolate
will be served by Misses Anna Mitchell, Jennie Shortt,
Mattie Pattison and Grace Frink,
Messrs. Harry Newton and T. A. Ruane. As the guests leave the dining room they
may pass out through the green house beyond. About four hundred will be in
attendance. The guests from outside the city will be Mr. and Miss Browm, St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Bell, Ely, Minn.; Mr.
and Mrs. Pike, Ely, Minn.; Miss Anna Mitchell, Marquette, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Gowling, mother and brother of Miss Gowling,
Marquette; Mr. E. A. Glover, Hudson, Wis.; Mrs. John E. Glover, New Richmond,

"'Mrs. Mary G.
Pope'
The remains of Mrs.
Mary G. Pope, who died at Superior on November 2d, were brought here, last
Wednesday night, and taken to the home of Mrs. C. C. Pope. The funeral services
were held there on Friday afternoon, under the auspices of the Eastern
Star. Mrs. Pope was born at Port
Huron, Michigan, on April 25, 1872. She came to Wisconsin in 1887, and made her
home with her aunt, Mrs. Martin Patterson, at Superior. She was married there,
on June 3, 1896, to Ralph C. Pope, and in 1898 they moved to this city. Mr.
Pope died on March 15, 1905, and she then returned to Superior, where she had
since made her home with her aunt.
She had been in ill-health for more than a year, and went to a Boston
Hospital with the hope of obtaining relief. Last July she again visited here,
and went from here to Boston for further treatment. The skill of the surgeons
was without avail, and after visiting with friends in Michigan she returned to
Superior, where she rapidly failed.
She is survived by four brothers, William E. Gowling,
of California, George W. Gowling, of Mitchell, S. Dak., R. J. Gowling, a vessel
captain on the Great Lakes, and Thomas A. Gowling, of
Marquette, Michigan. All were present at her funeral except R. J., to whom the
news of her death could not be communicated in time for him to get here. Her
other surviving relatives are her aunt, Mrs. Patterson, and her mother-in-law,
Mrs. C. C. Pope. Among others who came here to attend the funeral were Mrs.
Patterson and Mrs. William Whitney, of Superior, and Mrs. William E. Gowling. Mrs Pope was held in the highest esteem by the people of
this city. During her residence here of several years she endeared herself to
many good friends by her amiable qualities, and by frequent visits here since
her return to Superior she was able to retain her warm interest in our people
and their interest in her. She was bright of mind and liberal in her
disposition toward all of her large circle of acquaintances. Deep sympathy goes
out to the bereaved relatives in their sorrow."

Notes for Hon. John
Franklin Pope:
"Pope, Hon. John
F., lawyer, and ex-judge of probate for Wabasha county,
was the fourth child and third son in a family of nine children born to Ralph
and Mary (Richardson) Pope, of Orange, Orange county, Vermont. Judge Pope was
born October 7, 1836. His early life was spent on a farm. Young Pope had the
advantages of the country school, but when he had reached the age of sixteen
years had made a sorry record as a student, his highest ambition being to
escape school duties and evade punishment for his frequent violations of the
rules of school government. Fortunately he had a brother of scholarly acquirements,
who opened a select school in the village of Orange the winter that our subject
was sixteen, and in this school he became a conscript pupil, by order of a
stern father. Finding himself obliged to attend school, his pride soon awakened
him to a sense of shame for the great ignorance which he possessed when
compared with his more studious schoolmates. There was no escape from the
student life, and he could discover but one way to ameliorate his humiliating
condition, and that was by hard study. Once fully resolved on this point, his
really brilliant mind began to display its superior powers, and within two
years he was in advance of those of his age and leading his classes. He taught
school some and worked on the farm until he had reached his twenty-fifth year,
and then came west and learned the mason trade, and also blacksmithing; those
vocations he followed for many years in Beaver, Winona county.
Having acquired some skill as a debater by attending lyceum in Vermont, he was
frequently solicited to display his oratorical abilities as a pettifogger in
Beaver and vicinity. His first appearance before a court was not such as tended
to encourage his aspirations in that direction, he was pitted against a
browbeating pettifogger, who knew enough to discover that Mr. Pope knew nothing
of the business in hand, and the latter lost his case and felt very much
crestfallen. A second encounter of this kind aroused his ire and grit, and
though defeated he resolved to and did procure suitable law-books, and was well
prepared to meet his pugilistic opponent, when for the third time he had
occasion to appear before Justice H. B. Knowles and plead a case against Mr.
Oliver Porter, the browbeating pettifogger above mentioned. The latter
undertook to employ his usual tactics, and by physical force silence young
Pope, but found his mild-mannered opponent of former suits was ablaze with
wrath and bursting with rage. He had risen to his feet, and stretching his tall
form to its greatest height, he threatened with fierce language both lawyer and
court, and menaced that tribunal of justice with utter annihilation unless he
should be permitted to conduct his case according to the rules of practice. The
effect was excellent, and from that time forth no one ever attempted to
browbeat the new aspirant for forensic honors. It was more than eight years
after this little episode occurred before Mr. Pope applied for admission to the
bar. October 17, 1873, he passed a creditable examination and was admitted to
practice by the circuit court of Winona county. The
following year he came to Plainview and opened a law office. The spring of 1875
he formed a copartnership with Hon. H. P. Wilson, and
the following fall was elected probate judge for Wabasha county,
and was re-elected to the same position in 1877. His copartnership
with Mr. Wilson was dissolved in 1876, since which time Mr. Pope has continued
to practice law without a partner. He is a member of the Masonic chapter and
has thrice been elected master of the blue lodge of Plainview. He was married
December 11, 1864, to Sarah L. Welch, daughter of Samuel and Louiza Welch, of Winona county, by whom he has one child
now living, Frank, born March 6, 1880."

Notes for James R.
Pope:
In the course of doing
some research on James Pope's family, I received a response to a query I had
posted on the Howell County, Missouri board at Ancestry.com. The respondent
notified me that there was a listing for James R. Pope in the Civil War pension
index. The file (under both James and Amanda's names) turned out to be about an
inch thick, containing many affidavits relating to James Pope's disability
acquired during his service as a private in Company C of the 10th Minnesota
Volunteer Infantry. The locations of these affidavits indicate that in 1886,
1890 and 1893 he was resident in (i.e., listed his post office at) Lac Qui
Parle County Minnesota. In February 1902, he was near Martell (Pierce County),
Wisconsin, which is about 7-9 miles south of Baldwin, Wisconsin, where he was
enumerated in the 1900 census. Then in July 1907, his post office is listed as
Mountain View (Howell County), Missouri.

Notes for Amanda
Allen:
Liberty Twp., Wabash county, Indiana, where the Allen family is found in the 1850
census, is an adjoining township to Washington Twp., Grant county, where the
Allen's are found in the 1860 census. It may be reasonable to presume all of Amer and Malinda's children were
born in Liberty Twp. in Wabash county, Indiana.
I am not sure why
Amanda (Allen) Pope is enumerated in her brother
William's household in the 1900 Federal census in Trempealeau, but it may have
been to help care for their 80 year-old mother, who was also in this household.
