Descendants of Philipp Zenger and Margaretha Feuer

Generation No. 4

        1.  Philipp4 Zenger  (Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born abt. 1706, and died Aft. Nov 1768.  He married Margaretha Feuer 23 Nov 1734 in Wangen, Alsace, France1,2, daughter of Johann Feuer and Anna Böhn.  She was born abt. 1713 in Wangen, Alsace, France2, and died Aft. Nov 1768.

Notes for Philipp Zenger:

Philipp is the younger of the two known sons of Michael Zenger (the Swiss emigrant) and Maria Elisabetha Kempf. Philipp's birth date is a reasonable estimate based on his marriage date. Unfortunately, the baptismal and death records for Wangen for most of the 18th century appear to have been lost.

+      7                ii.    Michael Zänger, born 24 Oct 1767 in Wangen, Alsace, France; died 26 Dec 1809 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France.

Had Johann Philipp Zaenger died just a few years earlier, I would have missed his descriptive death record from the Wangen civil record book. I doubt that I would have been able to connect this tree with  the earlier generations with confidence (since Wangen church records of deaths and baptisms have been almost completely lost for all of the 18th century prior to the year 1792). As it is, the evidence of Johann Philipp and Magdalena Jung’s family in Pfalz is threadbare; of the few microfilmed pages that exist in the Ingenheim church book around 1760, I was fortunate to find one that mentioned a Zaenger. Of (all?) the children of Johann Philipp and Magdalena Jung, I currently only have record of these two, though it seems reasonable to suspect that there may have been others. Possibly records exist in other towns in Pfalz, but I have not yet seen them.

Like his father before him, Johann Philipp practiced the weaver’s trade. I suspect this trade may have been at least part of the reason for his travels into the Pfalz region, but I have not had much luck finding resources that discuss 18th century trade, crafts or other commercial interactions along this part of the (now) French/German border. I’ll keep looking …

Notes for Johann Jacob Zänger:

I do not find a record in the Wangen church or civil books for either the birth or death of (Johann) Jacob Zänger; however, both of his marriages are recorded in the Wangen church book. The first marriage, to Eva Riehl in 1768, mentions the parents of both the groom and the bride. I am estimating his birth year based on the Johann Jacob Zenger who appears on the 1763 Festo Paschates (Easter) confirmation list, with his age then being about 15 years old. I think it is reasonable to guess that Jacob was born in Wangen, but it is not certain.

Notes for Carl Friedrich Zänger:

Generation No. 6

        7.  Michael6 Zänger (Johann Philipp5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 24 Oct 1767 in Wangen, Alsace, France40, and died 26 Dec 1809 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France41.  He married Barbara Peter 24 Dec 1794 in Dorlisheim, Bas-Rhin, France, daughter of Lorenz Peter and Barbara Dahl.  She was born 08 Mar 1770 in Dorlisheim, Alsace, France42, and died 10 Jun 1852 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France43,44.

More About Michael Zänger:

Confirmation: 1782, Festo Paschatis45

Children of Michael Zänger and Barbara Peter are:

+      17               i.    Johann Michael7 Zänger, born 17 Sep 1795 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France; died 03 Apr 1865 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France.

+      18              ii.    Johannes Zänger, born 01 Oct 1798 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France; died 16 May 1840 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France.

19             iii.    Johann Carl Zänger, born 10 Nov 1802 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France46; died abt. 1870.

When Michael Zaenger died at the end of 1809, he was a mere 42 years old, and he left his widow with three young sons, all under age sixteen. Cause of death was given as “auf der hünersteig gestorben, an der Brust Sucht” (    ).

By 1809, most of Alsace had been under French rule for a little over a century. Within another five years they would see the end of the French Empire of Napoléon Bonaparte in 1814; once again Alsace would become a crossroads for invading armies,  with all the  associated political and economic turmoil that that entails.

As for Johann Carl Zaenger, I have only his birth record from Wangen. I have not found a marriage or death record at Wangen, so my estimate for the date of death is a complete guess. He may very likely have moved elsewhere.

        8.  Johann Georg6 Zänger (Johann Philipp5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 23 Nov 1776 in Wangen, Alsace, France47, and died 08 Feb 1848 in Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin, France48.  He married Maria Elisabetha Schwartz 29 Sep 1796 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France49, daughter of Johann Schwartz and Maria Klein.  She was born 14 Oct 1778 in Wangen, Alsace, France49, and died 25 Dec 1858 in Wangen, Bas-Rhin, France50.

Notes for Johannes Zänger:

It is likely that Johannes was born in Wangen, though I do not have a direct citation; his brother Lorentz's 1796 marriage record does say that Lorentz was "geboren zu Wangen", so there is a reasonable possibility that Johannnes was as well.

This birth entry for Johannes is based on the LDS Ancestral File posting by Grant Walker. I have not yet (May 2009) been able to locate the source record that was used. The filmed Wangen church book does not have baptismal records around this time period. Johannes death record from the Kandel church book (LDS film 0193933) lists his date of birth as 1 Feb 1770.

Notes for Anna Margaretha Nuß:

The parentage of Anna Margaretha Nuss is taken from the LDS Ancestral File posting by Grant Walker. I have not yet (May 2009) been able to determine the source he used for her birth date. Her death record, however, is in the Kandel church book, and her age listed at 43 years old in 1819 is consistent with a 1776 date of birth.

Notes for Lorentz Zänger:

The information that I have about Lorentz is a bit unusual, as it seems to be centered around Wangen more than where his parents settled in Minderslachen, Pfalz.

It looks as if all of the children of Lorentz and Barbara Koch emigrated to America, except for the oldest son, David. Whereas daughter Barbara (and her husband) and son Philipp emigrated in the 1850's, daughter Elisabeth and her family did not come until the early 1860's.

While their older sibling, Johann David, did not emigrate to America, his oldest son, also named David, did travel to America. However, he did not emigrate to Hamilton County, Ohio, (or even to Wood County, Ohio, where more distant cousins were) as many of his kin before him had done, but in 1880 was in California, and then returned to Wangen, married and raised a family that left descendants there.

Like his father before him, “Jean” Zaenger also died young, passing away at the age of forty-one.

Of the oldest daughter of Johannes and Margaretha I only have her birth record. Since her death is not recorded in Wangen. I think she may have gotten married and moved on to one of the nearby towns, but this is only speculation at present. Of the surviving son Johann, born 1831, there is also no further record in Wangen, but I do have some additional evidence about him. My uncle in Toledo has a letter that was written by Christian Zaenger to his brother in October 1878. It was addressed to “Monsieur Zänger Jean, Province d’Oran, Algere, Afrique”. However, the letter was returned, with “décedée” marked on the back. Apparently Johann (Jean) had traveled to the (then) French colony of Algeria, where he died sometime around 1878 or so. I was able to confirm his death information through the efforts of a French researcher familiar with the colonial civil records in the archives at Aix-en-Provence.

Notes for Eva Katherina Nuss:

In 1860 census listed as "Catharine Singer" in the household of her son-in-law Thomas Will.

The LDS microfilm of the Kandel area church records does not list baptisms from 1800-1809. However, there are confirmation records of interest, because there is an Eva Catherina Nuss, with age given as 13 years, 8 months, a daughter of the deceased Georg Nuss, for the confirmation done on Domine Rogate, 1817. This is the 5th Sunday after Easter, and since Easter of 1817 was on 6 April, the confirmation date was in early May. Counting back based on her listed age, this puts Eva Catherina's birth date around September 1803. This matches up pretty well with the date estimated from the American census records.

Notes for Johann Michael Zänger:

listed as Johann Michael [Carl] Zaenger where I first encountered him (around 1998-1999) in the LDS Ancestral File. I am not certain where the "[Carl]" name came from. Indeed, for a number of years I didn't have any clear track of where he or any descendants of his might have been - I had the records of the baptisms of the four children from the Kandel church book, ... and that was it. Then in the early fall of 2008 I found myself poking around in the on-line Ohio death certificates at FamilySearch Labs where I happened upon the 1910 record for Magdalena "Apffel", which listed her parents as "Michael Zaenger" and "Eva Catherine Zapf". Well this is exactly what I had from the German church record, so It gave me enough incentive to dig deeper and look for this family in the Cincinnati area.

in the 12th ward of Cincinnati in 1860, 58 year-old "Jno. Zinger", with 57 year-old Catherine and 16 year-old Jacob.

"John M. Zaenger" appears on p. 312 of the 1859 Williams' Cincinnati City Directory, located at 533 Walnut. This is the same address as for a cooper named "Hy." [Henry] Wuest.

The 1865 Williams' Cincinnati Directory (p. 401) has "Mrs. C. Zaenger" boarding at 104 Bremen; the 1867 directory (p. 500) has "Geo. J. Zoenger" and "Mrs. K. Zoenger" at 106 Bremen. In the 1871 directory, "Eva C. Zaenger", widow, and "Geo. J. Zaenger", turner, are residing at 192 Bremen. The 1872 directory lists only Geo. J. "Zanger",  turner, at 192 Bremen (p. 931), but then mentions "Mrs. Zenger", widow; Jacob Zenger, Sr., turner, and Jacob Zenger, Jr., turner, all also residing at 192 Bremen.

Page 1075 of the 1879 Williams' Cincinnati directory lists "Catherine E. Zaenger", widow, and "Geo. J. Zaenger", 'dray.' (a drayman; someone who hauled goods on a 'dray', a wagon used for hauling goods from a port, a brewery,  etc.) . By the 1883 city directory (p. 745), "Catherine Zaenger", widow, at 270 Bremen, is still listed, but her son George is not.

A search of the New Orleans passenger lists yielded the arrival of "Jean Michel Zanger", Catherine, Magdalene, Friedrich, Catherine and Jacob. They immigrated on the ship "Ferriere", arriving at New Orleans on 27 November 1849. A 23 year-old female, Sibilla Zanger, is also included with this family list (another daughter ??; if so, why is she at the bottom on the list of this family)

Notes for Eva Catharine Zapf:

enumerated under her son Jacob as "Catharine Zinger" in the 1880 census

there is a confirmation record in the Kandel church book for an Eva Catherina Zapf, daughter of Friedrich Zapf in 1818 on Sontag Jubilate (the 3rd Sunday after Easter). In 1818, Easter was on 22 March, so counting back about 13 years and a few months would put Eva Catherine's birth sometime in late 1804. However, there is also another confirmation record (just prior to this 1818 one) for another Eva Catharina Zapf, daughter of Johannes Zapf from Höfen. Eva Catharina's marriage record would probably clear up who her father was, but the record, which probably was around 1827, is not on the film of the Kandel church book for this period (LDS film 0193931).

Notes for Johann Christoph Zänger:

It seems that Christoph was the very first of the extended Zaenger clan to emigrate to the United States, probably sometime between 1830-1840. Christoph's obituary puts the year at 1832. Unfortunately, almost all of Esther and Christoph's children died in their youth, perhaps from one of the cholera epidemics during the early to mid 1850's. Their youngest son, John, was the lone survivor.

I am indebted to Mr. Robert Buecher of St. Louis, Missouri, for copies of the obits, published church records, and helpful correspondence regarding Christoph and his descendents in St. Clair county, Illinois. He is a descendent of the Lepere line.

The 1874 Atlas of St. Clair County shows the acreage of Christoph Zaenger located in Sections 9 and 16 of Stookey Twp.

Notes for Maria Barbara Zänger:

"'Death of Mrs. Miller'

Barbara M. Zaenger was born in Alsace, Germany, Jan. 25, 1825, and died at her home in Perrysburg on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1903, at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 24 days.

She was married in Germany to Chris. Miller, Jan. 20, 1852, and in Setember of 1854, she and her husband came to this country, settling in this place where they have since resided.

Two children were born to this union, one girl who died in infancy and the surviving son, C. F. Miller, of Bellevue, who has cared for his mother during her illness.

Mrs. Miller has been a sufferer for the past four months and bore her pain patiently. She was a loving wife and mother, a kind and sympathizing neighbor and always a helper in the time of need.

Her funeral services were held in the German M. E. church on (this) Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by Rev. Koch of Toledo, and the remains laid to rest in Ft. Meigs cemetery.

Many friends sympathize with the husband and son in their sad bereavement."

Notes for Philipp Jacob Zänger:

After finding Philipp's birth listing in the French civil records, I did not find either his marriage or death mentioned in the records of Wangen. This left me with a bit of a puzzle, which came back to me while searching for other Zaenger family listings in the pages of the American census. In the 1860 federal census for Perrysburg, Ohio, I expected to find my 2nd great-grandfather Christian listed there, as well as Christian's brother Frederick with his family. I did find a family that matched what I knew about Christian Zaenger in most details, except that the head of household was listed as "Phillip Singer". Tantalizing coincidence, in that I had also found some 1866 land records in Wood County relating to some dealings in Section 24. These land records were between Christian and Sophia "Zanger" and Phillip and Henrietta Zanger. So I went looking again in the 1860 census and I did indeed find Phillip and Henrietta "Senger" in Perrysburg township. This Phillip was age 30 in 1860, as I would expect for the youngest son of Lorentz and Barbara. However, it was apparent that Phillip likely married a widow with children, as the oldest child listed in this household was a 14 year old son. Born in New York, by the way.

The 1870 census listed this family again in the corporation of Perrysburg; 40 year old Philip "Singer" with Henrietta; now with nine children, the youngest a daughter named Bertha, age 3. By the 1880 census, though, this family seems to have split up. A Phillip "Singer", age 50, is enumerated in Toledo, Ohio, as a boarder in the household of (as I later determine, a fifth cousin) Charles W. (Charles Guillaume) Treuschel. I also find 56 year old Henrietta "Singer" still in Perrysburg, but with only two of her children, daughters Frederica and Eliza. What of Henrietta's other children, especially Frederica and Eliza's younger sister Bertha, who would be about 12-13 years old in 1880. Fortunately, the LDS had recently published their free online transcription of the 1880 federal census, searchable by a number of different parameters. One day I went looking for Bertha - and found her! In New York. Dayton, New York, to be specific. She was listed as the Ohio-born 12 year old sister-in-law of Jacob and Mary Dersey.

Later I found Bertha again in Heritage Quest's searchable online 1900 census as a 32 year old sister-in-law to Barney and Barbara McConathy; this time, in Columbus, Ohio.

Armed with these two locations, I have done additional digging in records from Dayton and Columbus. City directories for Columbus, Ohio have various listings for Henrietta and her two younger daughters - in 1890-91 they are "Harriet", Eliza and Frederica (at 114 W. Fulton St.); in 1891-92 listed as "Mrs Henrietta Zaenger", Eliza and "Frederick" (at 'Pearl r 29 Stewart av'); in 1892-93 as "Henriette Zanger, wid Philip", Eliza and "Fred" (at 23 W. Livingston av); in 1893-94 as "Frederick" Zanger (at 17 W. Frankfort); and then in 1895-96 as Frederica Zanger (again at 17 W. Frankfort). Henrietta's obit also listed her last address as 17 W. Frankfort.

When I went looking in Dayton, New York, I found a wealth of data for Henrietta's husband (ex-husband?; whether they had formally divorced or not is unclear) Philipp. Mr. Elbert Phillips of Henderson, New York responded to a query I had posted on a genealogy b-board. He also was kind enough to mail me copies of a number of resources. From the 1901 "Historical and Biographical History of the Township of Dayton, Cattaraugus County, New York" a brief bio of Philipp and Henrietta's son, "Philip" -

"J. P. Zanger was born Dec. 27, 1856. He is the son of Phillip Zanger, who was born Jan. 24, 1811, in France and died Feb. 22, 1893. His mother, Henrietta Minach, was born in Saxony, Germany and died Feb. 13, 1892. J. P. Zanger married May 18, 1881, Lena Silleman and they have one son, Parm Merton, born Nov. 16, 1882. Mr. Zanger is a farmer in Fair Plain."

From the 1985 "The History of Dayton, 1900-1985"; under the section for 'Silleman' -

"The eldest daughter, Lena, born October 12, 1857 was married May 18, 1881 to Philip Zanger. They had one son, Parm Zanger born November 16, 1886 who married Bianca (Beaver) born November 2, 1886. Their adopted daughter, Betty who met with a tragic death at an early age, by drowning in a pond, in the Village of Dayton."

Under the section for 'Zanger' (includes a photograph of Parm and Bianca Zanger) -

"Parm Merton Zanger was born November 16, 1882, died January 15, 1951. The son of Philip and Lena (Silleman) Zanger, who were born in 1856. Parm married Bianca Beaver, daughter of Charles and Mary Beaver, who died at age 55 on March 23, 1942."

I also sent a request for information to the Cattaraugus County Museum. They were able to send a number of documents and maps, including a copy of the will for Phillip J. Zanger, dated 28 July 1893. This will names a son, Philip J. Zanger, in Dayton, New York, and daughters Barbara McConathy, Frederica Zanger and Eliza Fisher (?!) in Columbus, Ohio and daughter Bertha Zanger "Silliman" in Toledo, Ohio.

So, is the Philip "Singer" shown in the early Perrysburg, Ohio census the same as the Philipp Jacob Zaenger born in Wangen. Given the information I have on hand, I think the answer is - Yes. His bio from the 1901 Dayton history gives the correct birth day and month, but I believe the wrong year; Markham's Cemetery records give his years as 1830-1894, and an 1830 birth year is consistent with the ages from census in Ohio and New York. I think I may have found Philipp's immigration ship - in "Germans to America" there is a listing for a "P. Jacob Zaerger" who arrived in New York on 15 December 1853 on board the 'Samuel Badger'. Like his cousin Christian who came the following year in 1854, I think Philipp may have taken the Hudson River up to the Erie Canal and then across to Buffalo, New York. I believe he may have stayed in this area of western New York for a time, where he married the widowed (?, possibly divorced) Henrietta, who had a least one, and perhaps 3-4 children. They then traveled west on the lake route, eventually finding themselves in Wood county, Ohio, by 1860.

Notes for Henrietta Minnich:

Her death notice from the local paper -

"'Died'

Zanger - Monday at 11 p. m., at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Barney McConathy, 17 West Frankfort street, Henrietta Zanger, aged 68 years, 3 months and 20 days.

Funeral Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the German M. E. Church, corner Livingston avenue and Third street."

 - Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, Tuesday, 14 February 1893, p. 7, c. 8

Henrietta's maiden surname of "Minnich" is taken from several death and cemetery records of her children. Early on I came to suspect that she may have had another spouse prior to Philip Zanger; to a man named Huff or Hoff. This was based on several circumstantial pieces of evidence. First, there is the 1860 census for Perrysburg, Ohio, (as also discussed in the Notes for Philipp Zanger) that shows his family with Henrietta including daughter Mary, age 9. Then the 1870 census for this family showing daughters Mary, age 19, and Bertha, age 3. Next I have the 1880 census, now in Dayton, New York, that enumerates Mary, the 29 year-old wife of Jacob Dersey, with sister-in-law "Berthie Zanger", age 12, born in Ohio. Finally, however, the 1901 "History of Dayton"'s article on the family of Jacob Dersey states that his wife Mary's maiden name was "Huff". This suggested to me that the first three (or perhaps four) children listed in the 1870 Perrysburg, Ohio census for Philipp and Henrietta were actually children from her earlier marriage to a man named Huff or Hoff.

If I could find evidence from Henrietta's marriage record to Philipp Zanger, it might help to bear this out further. It would also help if I were able to find a record in the 1850 census for Henrietta and her earlier husband. However, there were a number of Huff's and Hoff's in the census indexes for Cattaraugus and Erie counties in New York, so I put a search for this item on the back burner. Fortunately, over time the searchable indexes for online census have improved greatly. I think I finally (September 2005) found Henrietta and her first husband under a listing in the 1850 census for the town of Erie, New York - under "Valentin Hof", a 40 year-old blacksmith, with wife "Henryetta", age 25, and sons Charles, age 3, and Henry, 5 months. This all corresponds nicely to the Henrietta, Charles and Henry who are enumerated with Philipp Zaenger in the 1860 and 1870 census in Perrysburg, Ohio.

It also occurred to me that it might be interesting to try to see if I could find a record of Henrietta and Philipp's marriage from German language church records from Buffalo, New York. Or perhaps at least a record of the children of Henrietta and Valentin "Hof" that I thought would have been born in Buffalo. A survey through the LDS library catalog had more than a dozen different Buffalo church records microfilmed, any of several of which might have had German congregations. There was, however, only one of these churches that had "German" in its name; this was Saint Peter's German (FHL film 1381672). Using this film, I did indeed find the baptismal records for Henrietta and Valentin Huf's children; Henry (Heinrich), Mary (Maria) and Henriette. I did not find a record for Henrietta and Philipp's marriage. But I was surprised, on the very first page of the first item on the film, to locate the record for the marriage of Valentin Huf and Henrietta in Buffalo in 1849. It seemed, therefore, that Valentin Huf was perhaps not the father of Henrietta's oldest child, Charles. And it gave Henrietta's name in 1849 as "Eichler".

Now, this was a revelation, and all because of a connection to a record I had come across years before, in 1999. Early in my research on Christian Zaenger in Perrysburg, Ohio, I had compiled a list of records for many Zaengers in Wood and Lucas counties. In the indices for Civil War pension records I found Christian's name and those of a number of other relatives. I also found a listing for a "Charles Zaenger", a private who served in the 111th OVI. I ordered copies of these pension files, but this Charles Zaenger remained mysterious. There was no definitive connection in his pension file to the Zaengers from Alsace; his record said he was born in Germany. I was also not able to make any connection of this Charles Zaenger to any of the Zaengers I found in my review of the Alsatian church and civil records. While getting the pension records I had also collected a number of death certificates. And on the death record for Charles Zaenger, there was something else written, in parentheses, on the line with his name - the word "Eichiler".

At the time, I had thought "Eichiler" might have been a German place name or other kind of term, but I was not able to identify it. Now, based on the Buffalo church record, it looked like Eichler was Charles' original surname, and Henrietta's married name by an as yet unknown earlier husband.

Notes for Catherine Jäger:

"'Obituary

Mrs. Catherine Yeager Zaenger 1829-1912.'

Mrs. Catherine Yeager Zaenger was born in Wangen, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, on the 17th of June, 1829. She came to America with her parents in 1854, locating in the village of Perrysburg. Two months after their arrival in this country, the parents were taken away by death during the cholera plague.

Mrs. Zanger united with the German Methodist Episcopal church of Perrysburg, in 1855.

Before coming to this country she married to Mr. John Frederick Zaenger, who died Oct. 20, 1897. This union was blessed with six children. Elizabeth, Margaret and Minnie preceded her in death; and Christ, Fred and Fia survive to mourn her departure. Aside from her immediate family, she leaves a nephew, Mr. Fred Yeager, other more distant relatives, and many friends. She finished her earthly pilgrimage at her home in Perrysburg, March 5, 1912, at the age of 82 years 8 months and 17 days.

The deceased was a devout christian lady, loyal and true to her Savior. Her life had its share of sorrow and hardships, but that seemed only to make her faith stronger. Cheerful in disposition, she waited patiently on the coming of her master, having frequently said that she was ready to go when the Lord would call her. Her readiness gave her the joy that she would soon be with Christ, her Lord. This, her longing, has been satisfied.

The funeral services were conducted at the German Methodist church, on Friday, March 8, 1912, at 2 p. m., by Rev. J. E. Beal of Toledo, assisted by Rev. C. E. Severinghaus and Rev. Holtkamp of Toledo, and Rev. E. J. Webster of this place."

Notes for Jean George Bohnert:

a bit of a mystery, or perhaps not -

Jean George's birth record lists his mother's name as "Catherine Zaeng", and his 1861 Bohnert/Gratz marriage record and his death record spell the mother's surname as "Zaenger". The ages of these two parents match well with the parents of Marguerite and Chrétien Bohnert, who were John George Bohnert and "Marguerite" Zaenger.  Also on the 1861 Bohnert/Gratz marriage record, one of the witnesses, and listed as the brother of the (younger) Jean George Bohnert, appears by his age to be the son Chrétien of John George (the elder) and Marguerite. These are the only persons of the Bohnert and Zaenger surnames in the Sarre-Union civil records in this time frame. Thus, in the absence of any other data to the contrary, it seems that "Catherine" Zaenger was the same person as Marguerite Zaenger, who married to Jean George Bohnert in Wangen in April 1829.

Notes for Cora Julia Heikes:

An Ancestral File submission has Cora buried in the "Union Cemetery near Windsor". I think this is probably the cemetery next to the Union church that is a couple miles south of Windsor, in Stoney Creek Twp., Randolph county, which is 2-3 miles ESE of Smithfield, in Delaware county.

In the 1920 census, Cora J. Drake is enumerated with her daughter Nina (Will) Walker's family in Salt Lake City. In 1910, widow Cora Drake is in Muncie, Indiana with son Nelson (?) Barnett and daughter Nina Will and son Omer Will. The 1900 census in Stoney Creek Twp., Randolph county, Indiana has widow Cora Will with children Laura, Charley and Nelson Barnett, as well as children Nina and Samuel O. Will. I think Cora's first husband was probably the John W. Barnett who died at age 29 on 9 Nov 1888 in Perry Twp., Delaware county. After her second husband George Will died in 1898, she then married a man named Drake after 1900 who died prior to the 1910 census. I don't see a candidate for this man in the death record index for Delaware county yet.

However, I did (Mar 2005) find what I think is the correct third marriage to Cora. Putting "Cora Will" into the Indiana marriage database did give a hit - Cora J. Will married Peter A. Drake on 30 Nov 1900. Does not list the county specifically. I think this 38 year-old Peter is the same as the Peter A. Drake who is shown as the 17 year-old son of Moses and Elizabeth Drake in the 1880 census of Stony Creek Twp., Henry county, Indiana. This township in the northeast corner of Henry county borders on both Delaware and Randolph counties, and is about 6 miles SSW of Windsor, Indiana.

The land records from after his father's death seemed to indicate that George had married to a woman named Elizabeth prior to 1858, but I couldn't find anything else for George in Dearborn County or the near vicinity from the 1860 census on.

In the Dearborn County, Indiana marriages there was a listing for a marriage between a George "Singer" and an Elizabeth Runck on 15 May 1856. But without further documentation, I couldn't make much out of it.

This impasse lasted for a number of years.

Then one evening, while poking around in Ancestry, I ran across the 1856 marriage listing again and decided to do a little web searching, this time based on Elizabeth Runck's name. In short order a search engine brought up a web page for the "Singer-Page Family Gateway". Intrigued, I looked a little closer, and this did indeed seem to be the Elizabeth Runck from Indiana; in fact, an image of the 1856 Dearborn County marriage certificate to George Singer was right there for the viewing. Much detail and a number of photographs of family descendants were posted further down on the web page.

Jan 1856 in Indiana; died abt. 16 Jan 1924.

Notes for Louisa Egelus:

I had repeatedly run across several Indiana state marriage index listings for the 1883 marriage of Louisa Egelus to "John Worch", but I had not been able to find any further mention of them in later census or other public records. After several years of no further clues turning up, I think I have just found her (16 July 2009). While poking around in the Ancestry.com "Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941", I noted again the entry for "Louisa G. Egelus" in Marion county on 9 June 1892; no groom's name was given in the entry. However, by putting in just that exact date and "Marion" as the county to search, of the 37 search results returned, I found one to be especially interesting - the entry for a "Louisa G. Wosch" who had married to a James Watson. Searching for this Louisa Watson in Indiana had her and James turn up in Muncie, the details from the 1900 and 1910 census listing fitting to a "T" what I already had for Louisa. I'm still not sure what happened to John Worch; I wonder if the name was really "Wosch" after all?

Now, James and Louisa did not appear in the 1920 Delaware county, Indiana, census. Turns out if you look at "Indiana Deaths, 1882-1920", there is a 78 year-old James Watson who died in Muncie in 1912. If this was Louisa's James, did she remarry for a third time, prior to the 1920 census? There is a listing for a marriage in Delaware county between a "Louisa I. Watson" and a "Thomas A Prewitt" in 1916, which fits.

A widowed, 74 year-old Louisa Z. Prewitt is a lodger in the household of Ira and Elsie Patrick in the the 1930 census in Muncie.

Notes for Albert Huber:

I was unsure for quite some time as to what to make of the family of Albert and Louisa, especially as to what became of their youngest son, John Albert Huber, Jr. In the 1870 census in Kelso Twp., Dearborn County [M593-307, p. 487 B], Albert and Louisa are listed with children Edward, William, Louisa, Amelia and Albert. In the 1880 census for Kelso Twp. [T9-272, p. 126], the children are given as Edward, William, Louisa, Alice and Albert Jr. I found reference to all of the children in later records, except for "Albert".

Then, in January 2004, I came across some material posted on the Internet by James N. Boblenz regarding the "Huber Family of Marion, Ohio". Except that here, the younger son was called "John A." Huber. Sure enough, subsequent search of census in Marion, Ohio did turn up our "John" Huber. According to Boblenz: "Albert (1836-1894), the oldest of the children was destined to be a farmer. In their childhood years, Albert and Edward did most of the farming. When Edward became 13 years of age, he began to work with his father in the shop while Albert continued to farm. Albert married Louisa Senger [aka Zaenger - easy to see the transition from the German pronounciation of the name - ICZ], who was born in Bavaria, Germany [the Rhineland-Pfalz region at that time included in the territory of Bavaria - ICZ]. They had five children, four of whom are buried in Dover, Indiana, with their parents. Their son, John, moved to Marion, Ohio, in 1898 [which was why he was missing from the 1900 Indiana census - ICZ]. Albert spent his entire life farming the land his father had purchased in 1834. In fact, he died on 14 May 1894 while plowing corn after having been the pallbearer for a friend earlier in the day. His hands were still on the plow when he was found later in the day by his son, John."

Further research in the Marion (Ohio) Star newspaper has yielded additional information -

"Albert Huber, of Kelso, Ind., is visiting his brother, E. Huber, at his residence on north East street, for a few days."

 - Marion (Ohio) Daily Star, 6 February 1885

"'Edward Huber's Brother

He Drops Dead on His Indiana Farm While at Work.'

Edward Huber, Marion's prominent townsman, received information Tuesday evening that his brother, Albert Huber, had died during the day at his home in Indiana. The particulars of the sudden death are given as follows in an Enquirer special under date of May 15, from Lawrenceburg, Ind.:

"The public was greatly shocked today by the announcement that Albert Huber, one of the leading citizens of the county, had dropped dead on his farm near Dover, while plowing corn.

He attended the funeral of William Gaynor, one of his neighbors, early in the morning, and acted as one of the pallbearers for his deceased friend, and on his returning home sent his son to Dover on an errand, saying he would plow until the boy returned.

He had evidently followed the team several hundred yards and then sank down dead within the furrow made by the plow, for when the son returned an hour later, his father lay dead, with his hands still holding on to the handles of the plow, but the horses, as if realizing that the arm that guided their course had been paralyzed by the death angel, quietly stood in their tracks, and the corpse rested on its knees, with the head drooping forward between the handles of the plow that were firmly clasped by the rigid fingers of the dead plowman. Mr. Huber was one of the leaders of the Republican party, had just retired from the Revenue Service and, by his generous nature, was popular with all classes. He is quite wealthy, and has an extensive and prominent relationship throughout Ohio and Indiana. Although 56 years of age, he was believed to be in rugged health at the time of his sudden death.""

Notes for John Albert Huber:

Again from the Huber family history by James N. Boblenz: "John was born in Dover, Indiana, in 1868. He lived with his parents and helped on the farm. In May of 1894, he found his father dead in the field with his hands still on the plow while working his beloved farm. He decided to leave the farm and move to Marion, Ohio, to work with his Uncle Edward. He married Vesta Bean in 1898. He was Secretary-Treasurer in the Marion Malleable Iron Company. He died in 1934, and is buried in the Marion Cemetery on Delaware Avenue".

"An old friend of the Star, John A. Huber, has had a grievance against the Star scribe. Some moons since Mr. Huber quietly tipped it off to the scribe that he was looking for a wife, but the scribe failed to give publicity to the tip. The scribe didn't see the consuming necessity. The scribe had every reason to believe thet the public was "on." Lately Mr. Huber has realized that such an item was totally unnecessary and now he and the scribe are on friendly terms again."

 - Marion (Ohio) Daily Star, Saturday, 18 September 1897, p. 4

The biography in the 1907 Marion County, Ohio history describes him thus:

"John A. Huber, one of Marion's enterprising and well-known business men, who is interested in a number of successful enterprises here and is the manager of the large Huber estate, was born in 1868 in Dearborn County, Indiana, and is the son of the late Albert Huber.

He served as treasurer and secretary of this concern until June, 1905, during the next year being its vice-president and general manager. Since retiring from the above company, Mr. Huber has had charge of the Edward Huber estate, and gives attention to his own investments.

In 1898, Mr. Huber married to Vesta A. Bean, daughter of Marion Bean, of Marion. Mr. and Mrs. Huber belong to the Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Huber is a 32nd degree Mason and belongs to the Blue Lodge at Cincinnati, Chapter, Council and Commandery, at Marion, the Shrine, at Columbus, and the Consistory at Cincinnati. For some time I had thought that a younger John A. Huber, also found in the Marion, Ohio area, might have been John and Vesta Huber's son, even though they were not shown with children in any of the 1910, 1920 or 1930 census. However, this younger John Huber was actually the son of an apparently unrelated family, William David and Minnie (Yost) Huber of Logan County, Ohio. The younger John A. Huber's wife was Ena Violet (McRill) Huber; he died in 1973, she in 1976.

Notes for Vesta Bean:

"'Huber-Been

A Very Quiet Wedding at the Christian Parsonage'

Mr. John A. Huber and Miss Vesta M. Been were quietly married Monday evening at the Christian parsonage by Rev. Alonzo [sp?] Skidmore. There were none present at the wedding other than the contracting parties and Rev. Skidmore. They left directly after the ceremony was performed for Chicago where they will spend a few days after which they will return to this city and commence housekeeping at once[?]. Although no one but the bride's father knew they intended being married Monday evening, it was not a surprise to their friends as it has been known for some time that they were engaged.

Of Mr. and Mrs. Huber very little need be said, as both are well known here. Mr. Huber came here from Cincinnati a few years ago to take charge of the Marion Malleable Iron company's office, and has since made a host of friends. Mrs. Huber is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Been of north State street. She was a member of the graduating class at the High school this year and her beauty and accomplishments are known to almost all of Marion's residents. Both have a large circle of acquaintences who will hasten to extend congratulations and best wishes."

Huber was driving west and met the truck coming from the east. He was crowded into the other machine and his car careened into the ditch. The front of the Huber car was badly damaged and gless from the shattered windshield cut Mrs. Huber. She was taken to Dr. MIller at Claridon by a neighbor for treatment.

Notes for Herman Bellstedt:

"Herman Bellstedt

(b Bremen, Germany 12 Feb 1858; d San Francisco 8 June 1926)

Herman Bellstedt came to America in 1867 at the age of nine. His family settled in Cincinnati in 1872 where he studied the cornet with his father and Mylius Weigand. Being billed as the "Boy Wonder" he gave his debut performance on 10 May 1873. He then performed second cornet in the orchestra at Arctic Gardens, soon being promoted to first cornet and soloist. In 1874, he performed solo cornet with the Cincinnati Reed Band for five years under the direction of Michael Brand. In 1879, he became cornet soloist with the Red Hussar Band on Manhattan Beach, later returning to the Cincinnati Reed Band in 1883. He performed from 1889 to 1892 in Gilmore’s Band sitting next to Benjamin Bent, from 1904 to 1906 in Sousa’s Band (replacing Walter B. Rogers) performing next to Herbert L. Clarke, and from 1906 to 1909 in Frederick N. Innes’ Band (replacing Bohumir Kryl). He was billed by Innes as "Germany’s Greatest Cornet Soloist" (Schwartz 1957, 235-6). Bellstedt’s talents extended well beyond the cornet realm, as he conducted the Bellstedt & Ballenberg Band and performed first trumpet in orchestras conducted by Theodore Thomas, Van der Stucken, and Schradieck between the years of 1892 and 1904.

He founded the Bellstedt-Ballenger Band Denver Municipal Band in 1892 and became the conductor of the Denver Municipal Band in 1909, remaining in that position until 1912 (Rehrig 1991, 59). He performed with and conducted his own band at the Cincinnati Zoo beginning on 25 August 1902 (C. G. Conn 1902, 13). He became Professor of Wind Instruments at the Cincinnati Conservatory in 1913, and also conducted the Syrian Temple Shrine Band in 1919 and 1920. Bellstedt composed a variety of music for band, orchestra, piano, violin, and cornet. Napoli, Fantasia No.1, La Coquette, Capriccio Brilliante, La Mandolinata, and Variations on the Carnival of Venice are all well-known compositions for cornet by Bellstedt. Band compositions include Indian War Dance, Pettibone’s Compliments, Joke on Bodelia, The Everett, The Zoo, Royal Arcanum, Victory Day, The Elk’s Reunion, Los Angeles Pilgrimage, Chelton Hills, Friendly Greeting, and West End (Smith 1991, 32). He was known for his incredible tonguing and wide range. He made recordings with both Clarke and Rogers, but apparently no solo recordings (Noble 1964, 18). To Frank Simon, one of his most famous students, Herman Bellstedt was a "very strict, exacting, but terrific teacher…When he played for me, I was transported into another world…I doubt very much that I would have met with one half the success that good fortune has bestowed upon me if it were not for [his] masterful teaching and friendly guidance" (Freedland 1994, 36). Frank Simon is not included in this chapter, for he did not begin playing the cornet until the twentieth century. After Bellstedt’s death, Simon was given a medallion presented originally to Bellstedt by the Omaha Elks. The medallion was given to Simon by Bellstedt’s son at a live broadcast performance of the Armco Band directed by Simon, himself. To Bellstedt’s son, Simon was the perfect person to whom to give the medallion, as he was "the personification of the qualities with which my father was endowed." With tears on his cheeks, Simon miraculously finished the broadcast (Freedland 1994, 183-184). Sources of information are listed throughout this entry."

        121.  Johann Georg8 Propheter (Eva Catharina7 Zänger, Johannes6, Johann Jacob5, Philipp4 Zenger, Michael3, Peter2 Zänger, Anthoni1 Zenger) was born 12 Jul 1834 in Minderslachen, Pfalz (Germany)466, and died 06 May 1887 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio.  He married (1) Elizabeth Hammond abt. 1855.  She was born abt. 1835 in Germany, and died Bef. Jun 1860.  He married (2) Appolonia Merk 15 Nov 1860 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, daughter of John Merk and Josephe Merk.  She was born Apr 1841 in Baden (Germany), and died 03 Feb 1922 in Esopus, Ulster, New York.

Notes for Elizabeth Hammond:

the first mention I've had of Elizabeth Hammond's name is from her daighter Anna's death certificate.

Notes for Appolonia Merk:

a post I made on Ancestry's 'Propheter' message board, 26 March 2003 -

"Hi Bob. I think I have just about convinced myself that Appolonia IS Magdalena Merk. I say so for the following reasons: (1) found Appolonia in the 1900 census in Manhattan, NY [ T623-1113, ed 722, p. 4B, lines 56-61]. Gives her birth data as April 1841 in Germany. Later census of course has her in Ulster County. Now the Cincinnati marriage record has Magdalena Merk to George Propheter on 15 Nov 1860. So it is likely Magdalena in in Cincinnati for the 1860 census, age 19. So (2) I looked up under Merk in the print index for 1860 and found 1 Merk in Hamilton County, in Cincinnati, 7th ward. This household is [Roll 972, pp. 187B and 188A, lines 39-40, 1-4]

John Merk 22 m cabinet maker Baden

Josephe 25 f do

Apolonia 19 f Seamstress Baden

David 14 m Cane hurdler do

Frank A. 4 m NY

Josephe Eisenman age 1 f OH

This, I submit, is Apolonia Merk, who as Magdalena Merk married George Propheter in 1860. As you have pointed out, George's daughter Anna (who married Fred Cook) is shown with George Propheter at age 4 in the boarding house in ward 12. So if this interpretation is correct, then I still need to explain the origin of Georges daughter Josephine, who was born in 1858 - why wasn't she listed with him in the 1860 census, as 4 year old Anna was. I think the answer is that Josephine is Appolonia/Magdalena's daughter, perhaps out of wedlock and by another man. This "Josephine" may very well be the same as the 1 year old girl, Josephe, given in the Merk household in 1860. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on this."

He bagan at 5 a. m. doing his dairy work, was on his farm-product route until 2 p. m.: then took in several loads of hay, did the entire stereopticon work last night, and after that danced as late as anyone else. Certainly John (or "Jerry" as he is familiarly called below the hill) thrives on work, thrives physically and financially."

Notes for Louisa Propheter:

in the 1870 census the surname is written "Profeter"

Louisa's death certificate also lists "Emily Kiene" as her mother, but this is (apparently) simply in error.

The 1910 census says that Louis Walck was Louisa's second marriage(!). This explains the curious listing in the death certificate for the younger Edward Von Stein, where his mother's maiden name was "Gellenbeck" (Cora was the informant, she ought to know). This indicates that Louisa had a previous marriage to a man named Gellenbeck; Cora was their daughter.

Notes for Sophie Propheter:

"Sophie" is not listed in the (George) Adam "Profeter" household in the 1870 census.

... and her death certificate may suggest a reason why. Her husband, Joseph, was the informant, and he listed Sophia's parents as "Adam Propheter" and "Emilia Kiene". However, he also lists Sophia's birthplace as "Germany", and Sophia's listing in the 1900 census says that she emigrated in 1866, being born in Germany. This doesn't make any sense if Adam and Margaret were her parents, but could be the case if she was the child of Emilie Kiene by a previous relationship.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Minehart Lorenzen, of Center township; a sister, Mrs. Alfred Maurer, of No. 444 North Prospect street, Bowling Green, and a brother, Fred Treuschel, of Toledo."
