Both Anthony and Elias Abookire worked in the steel mills in Pittsburg for a while. Sometime after 1912, Elias, His wife Eugenie and daughter Claire ( she was still a baby ) moved to Kansas City for unknown reasons .Elias had a succesful grocery store in Independence, MO where our former president Harry Truman had a haberdashery shop close by. Phillip Abookire was told the following story by his father. Because Elias was a " foreigner " the Ku Klux Klan started a campaign against him and eventually picketed his store. Business fell off drastically and he was forced to leave the area. The reason ELias moved to Cleveland was because Eugenie's sister, Isabele Mady Karim was there and provided a temporary base.(related by Phillip Abookire)
