Includes NotesNotes for Chretien Andre Guillaume Zeller:
Contrary to a report attributed to Monsieur Victor Reulet in Lillian Bourgeois' history of St. James Parish, Cabannocey, that the first settlers at Vacherie were the Steins, Zellers, and Ockmans.
Chretien Andre Guillaume Zeller was listed as living next to the Edgard church in the St. John the Baptist Parish census of 1830. It was probably not until the early 1840's that he moved to Vacherie, assumedly by the route down Bayou L'Eglise, back of the Edgard church, to Lac Des Allemands, and across to Vacherie Folse.

Unreliable oral history is that Chretien Andre Guillaume Zeller came to Louisiana with two other families from Germany as ship stowaways around 1839, and that he was accompanied by his wife and oldest son, Jules Cesar Zeller, who was seven years old at the time. Other records indicate that Cesar Zeller was a native of St. James Parish, born at Vacherie on April 30, 1846. He was baptized at Notre Dame de la Paix Catholic Church on April 8, 1881, prior to his second marriage, apparently as a result of the wishes of his in-laws, as he was a non-Catholic.

Chretien Andre Guillaume Zeller (Wilhem Zeller) was listed as a 42 year old farmer from Germany, with his wife and five children, 'born in Louisiana', on the 1850 census of Vacherie. His wife was Marie Jasper, and she was born in Germany in 1808, as she was 61 years of age at her death on March 9, 1869.

Names and ages on census records are sometimes inexact. However, on the 1850 census, Euphemon, 13, was listed as Zellerís oldest child. He was probably actually Jules Cesar Zeller. The other children listed were Eugenia, Athanaise, Kitty, and Betsy Zeller. The names of a brother and sister of Cesar came down to later generations as 'Mina' and 'Robert', who were probably born after the 1850 census. The Zellers were related to the Kramers of Germany.
