I am researching the family of John Holmes and Catherine Crawley (Crowley), supposedly born in Cork County, Ireland. They emmigrated to America in the mid 1800's living in the Buffalo, NY area first. Eventually they came west to Wisconsin and lived near Omro. About 1884 they came to Minnesota and settled near Waldorf in Waseca County. I have good information about their descendants(of which I am one) but I am having trouble going further back. My grandfather said the family name was not originally Holmes but was changed upon immigration. I am trying to identify the original family name. John and Catherine Holmes had 8 children - Michael, Mary, Richard, Margaret, John(died in infancy), John(same name and was my great-grandfather, James, and Kate.
I am also researching other branches of the family tree on my paternal side - Sullivan, Conway, Culliton, & Gormley (all Irish), and Treloar(English) and Fiyol or Feol(Polish) on the maternal side.
