Crocken was indeed a Sea Fencible at Fort McHenry enlisting 13 January 1814. In his military file was the following: "I CERTIFY upon honor, that James Crocken being in the late Wm. H. Addison's company of the corps of SEA FENCIBLES, aged twenty two years; five feet seven inches high, has a dark complexion; Black hair; Dark eyes; was born in the City of Baltimore in the State of Maryland and is by occupation (?????) was enlisted by Capt. Gile (sp?) at Baltimore in the County of Baltimore in the State of Maryland on the thirteenth day of January 1814. That he is mustered for discharge in consequence of his time of Service having expired. That he has served for one year." signed the nineteenth day of January 1815 at Fort McHenry. by (????) He did receive a travel allowance from Ft. McHenry to Baltimore. His monthly pay was $12.00 and his discharge pay was in the amount of $54.96. He also receive a travel allowance from Ft. Notes for James Henry Crocken: His father, James J. indentured him to the Navy at age 16. When he completed his training and indenture, he reenlisted and served the balance of the time at VMI. According to William Edward Crocken, James J. was a fifer in the US Marine Corps from 1835 to 1852. Then he served at the Virginia Military Institute as a Fifer and Ordnance Sergeant from 1854 to 1885. Per Lu Buerkle: James Henry Crocken , possibly was the son of James J., first wife, whose name is unknown. James Henry Crocken was "indentured" to the US Marine Corps in 1834 or 1835. On the principal document, the signature of the father is James J. Crocken. James Henry was indentured to be trained as a musician at the Marine Corps School of Music at the Washington, D. C. Barracks. Following release of his indenture (at the age of 21) , James Henry then formally re-enlisted in the Corps and served 16 years as a Musician and Rifleman. During the war with Mexico, James Henry was aboard the Sloop "Portsmouth", stationed in San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay. He took part in numerous engagements along the coasts of Mexico and California. About the year 1854, he located at Lexington, Virginia and became connected with the Virginia Military Institute, as a musician. He was also an Ordnance Sergeant and Sutler at various times during his tenure at VMI. For a time his wife was employed at the hospital on the grounds as a seamstress. James Henry was one of three musicians (he played the fife) who went on the New Market Campaign. He accompanied that small band of young heroes (cadets) who laid aside their books and went forth to defend their homes. He was present with them at the Battle of New Market where so many were left on the battlefield. James Henry continued his work at VMI, until 1885, when he removed his family to Lincoln, Nebraska to join his son, William Jacob. William was connected with the Burlington RR at that time. Cinda was a very good friend to Marge, helping with groceries, doctors appointments, etc. Cinda also selected the time for services, 2:00 P.M., on the premise that Marge was not a morning person.
