Notes for J
OHN H. HUNT:
John is assumed to be buried in the Ashland Cemetery in Wapello Co., Iowa. As of this date (Sept. 2007) I have requested a photo of his headstone but have been told that it is so degraded that a photograph is impossible and that a rubbing will have to be done of it. It is alleged to read:
John H. Hunt
"Son of D.G. & M.G. Hunt"

1840 US Federal Census for Pike County, Illinois shows the following:
John - Head of Household
1 male 5-10yrs. ~ 1 male 10-15yrs. ~ 1 male 15-20yrs. ~ 1 male 50-60yrs.
3 females 5-10yrs ~ 1 female 40-50yrs.
5 of these people are employed in Agriculture; 1 attended a Primary of Common School; 3 of them are Scholars; and 1 is over the age of 21 and cannot read or write.
It is assumed that this is the family of our John H. Hunt, but has not be substantially proven by other records that may exist in Pike Co., Illinois.
Judging by birthdates acquired on the children of John H. Hunt it is assumed that the male 5-10 years old is David C. Hunt b, 1833; the male 10-15 years old is Thomas b, 1826; the male 15-20 years William B. b, 1819. As of June 26, 2007, the researcher has not been able to locate names for the 3 female children listed with this family. There are marriages listed for John's sons James and Simeon in the Illinois Marriage Index prior to the year of 1840. If these are correct then James and Simeon would not be listed in John's household in 1840.

1850 US Federal Census for District 13, Wapello County, Iowa shows the following:
All in the Household of John
John: Age 61~Farmer~Born in Virginia
Elizabeth: Age 49~Born in Virginia
Simon: Age 28~Farmer~Born in Virginia (This is Simeon)
William B.: Age 25~Farmer~Born in Virginia
Ellen A.: Age 20~Born in Massachusetts (This is William B.'s wife)
Thomas P.: Age 21~Farmer~Born Virginia
David C.: Age 19~Farmer~Born Virginia
Campbell: Age 2~Born Illinois (This is the son of William B. & Ellen A.)
Laura A. Kneeland: Age 30~Born Massachusetts (This is the sister of Ellen A. Laura died in 1851)

1852 Iowa State Census for Washington Twp 71-12, Wapello County, Iowa shows the following:
John - Head of Household
7 Males ~ 2 Females ~ No col'd males or females ~ 4 of the persons are eligible to vote ~ 3 of the persons are eligible for the Iowa Militia ~ There are no aliens in the household.
Because none of John's sons, except James, can be found listed in the 1852 IA Census as Head of Households, it can be presumed that the 7 males are all the same six listed in the 1850 census with the addition of William & Ellen's son George who was born in 1850. The 2 females would be Elizabeth and Ellen. Ellen's sister, Laura, who is listed in the 1850 census with this family died in 1851, so she would not be found in this year's census.

1854 Iowa State Census for Washington Twp, Wapello County, Iowa shows the following:
John - Head of Household
1 Male ~ 1 Female ~ No col'd males or females ~ 1 person is eligible to vote ~ 1 person is eligible for the Iowa Militia ~ There are no aliens in the household.
All children have moved out of the household which reseacher has been able to confirm through their separate listings in subsequent censuses.

Notes for E
LIZABETH:
On the 1840 US Federal Census for Pike County, Illinois it is assumed that the female 40-50 years old is Elizabeth, wife of John H. Hunt. (For more detailed information, see the file on John H. Hunt.)

Elizabeth is listed on the 1850 US Federal Census for Wapello County, Iowa (see the file on John H. Hunt). Her age is stated as 49-years-old which would put her year of birth as 1801.

The 1852 Iowa State Census for Washington Twp, Wapello, Iowa (see the filed on John H. Hunt) lists 2 females. Elizabeth is presumed to be one of these females.

1854 Iowa State Census for Washington Twp, Wapello, Iowa - see the file on John H. Hunt

In the 1856 Iowa State Census for Washington Twp, Wapello, Iowa, Elizabeth is the head of household yet listed with the family of son James. She is widowed which puts John's death occurring sometime between the 1854 and 1856, however, enumeration dates for these 2 census' are not available, so pinpointing John's death is still an active investigation.
Another interesting fact of this census is that while Elizabeth is shown as head of household, it is son James who is listed with all the agricultural properties and subsidies produced from that property. The question lies in the mind of the researcher - Upon father John's death did James move his family in with Elizabeth and take over his dad's farm or did Elizabeth move into the home of James? This question could be answered if land patents or deeds for John and James could be found in Iowa, but as of June 26, 2007 none have been located.

In the 1860 Census for Washington, Wapello, Iowa Elizabeth is living in the household of son David. Three years later we find that she has died and is buried in Montgomery Co., Iowa.
