Notes for Belduno Zizzi:
The name "Belduno" in the Cisternino dialect derives from the Italian words for "beautiful gift" ("bel" and "dono"). Spelling varies ("Bello Duno", "Bellidoni" . . .), often reflecting the uncertain translation from Latin to Italian or local dialect, or vice-versa. So from "Belduno", we get the Latin genitive "Bellidoni", meaning "of Belduno" -- commonly used on baptism records when referring to his descendants (e.g., "son of Belduno" would be "filius Bellidoni").

The name itself is exceedingly rare. In fact, I found only one other person who bore that name, the son of a Francesco Zizzi, who must have been a relative of Belduno, possibly a son. But none of Belduno's (other) descendants bore the name, which is unusual. This may mean that he had another given name, perhaps his first name, and that Belduno was a second name that was used more in common parlance. That he was quite prominent is clear from the continued use of the moniker "Belduno" to refer to that branch of the Zizzi family for the next hundred years.

Interestingly, the practice of creating names using the word "bel", or beautiful, may have been in vogue. I found a "Belladiana" born June 6, 1604 and a "Belloramo" born 28 January 1607.
