Notes for Giambatista Baldassarre: At the time of his son Vincenzo's marriage, Giambatista lived with him at Strada Santa Caterina, in Monopoli.
Giambatista's profession is cited as "landowner" in his son Vincenzo's marriage record and in his own death record. Given that Vincenzo was born in Polignano and that there is a tract of land in Polignano named Baldassarre, the family may have originated there. The Baldassarre family is also described as a major landowner in Mola (near Polignano) in 1799. See Lucarelli, Antonio, La Puglia nella Rivoluzione Napoletana del 1799, p. 210.
Giambatista signed his own name on his son Vincenzo's marriage record.
Baltasar de Gauna, apparently of Spanish origin, was a leading citizen of Monopoli in 1566. See Lanera, Marco, "Il Santacroce", in Monopoli nel Suo Passato, v. 2, p. 58. He may possibly have been a forebear of Giambattista, the name having later been "Italianized" from Baltasar to Baldassarre, but this is pure speculation.
