Notes for JOHN C CUSTER:

Information received from Darel Custer, Parkersburg, West Virginia.  April 27 1999

According to Darel, Johann had a previous wife and a son, Charles, when he lived in Prussia.  Charles was killed in the Franco-Prussian War and Johann's son, by his second wife, was due to be called up.  They left Prussia to prevent the son being sent to War.  They went first to Holland and then to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  From there, they settled in Belington, West Virginia.

Information received from Darel Custer, Parkersburg, West Virginia.  May 2 1999

During the Reign of Frederick the Great, East Prussia needed resettling so troops were sent to Slzburg for families who volunteered to go and they were all given farms.  During the Franco Prussian War, Charles (Karl) served as a member of the Imperial Guard and was killed in the Sudan.  Augustus was to be inducted into the Army in 1870, so the whole family fled to Holland.  From there, they got passage on a ship from Liverpool, England to New York (1870).  From New York to Pittsburgh, where they later bought 2 farms near Connelsville, Pennsylvania.

Johann, Henrietta and family sold their farm in Pennsylvania and moved to Belington, West Virginia.  Johann and Henrietta retired and lived with one of the daughters--maybe Annie Dent.

Notes for AUGUSTUS CUSTER:

Information received from Darel Custer May 2 1999

Augustus formed a coal company in Barbour County, 5 miles from Belington.  Town was later named Dartmoor.  The company went broke because Davis and Elkins did not send coal cars and Gus lost his order, and the mine closed down.  Davis and Elkins took over the mine.  He then went to Coalton (Womelsdorf) where he ran a hotel.  Married at Elkins before he went to Womelsdorf, approx. 1893.  Then moved to Grafton and bought a farm.  Leta was born near Elkins in 1894.  Gus owned a limestone quarry.  Carl was born at Womelsdorf in 1895.

Grace Custer died April 5 1901 as a result of childbirth.  Son Benny Olbert died six months later.  Gus worked as a geologist for Floyd Teter in Braxton and Gilmer Counties.  Located and opened coal mines.  The only route from Braxton and Gilmer counties to Belington was via the Little Kanawha River.  While traveling the river, he met Isabella Clarke and married her February 1913.

Gus died March 10 1941; Belle September 1941.  Both are buried in Burning Springs, West Virginia.

From a letter from Lucy Augusta Hornbrook (undated)

(As told to Uncle Theo. by his Grandmother Staub-- after Uncle Theo's father died he went to Cincinnati to live with his Grandparents--he was about 12 years old.)

Henry Umbach migrated to America from Württenburg, Germany (Kingdom of Prussia) and settled in New Orleans before the Civil War.  He started a bakery and Confectionery store.  Later the young girl followed.  They were married and became the parents of Henry who was the father of Theo., Mary, Edna, Hilda and Nellie.  An epidemic of black Plaque broke out and people died but the hundred.  The elder Henry Umbach was stricken and suddenly died after a brief marriage and young Henry was born fatherless.  His wife continued the business and later on opened another bakery and confectionery and delivered bread and confections to the soldiers during the Civil War.  She later sold the business and went to Iowa when Henry Jr was 14 years old.  She met Fred Staub and married him.

He was a painter and papering contractor and young Henry worked with him.  They were well to do and engaged my Mother as a domestic.  She stayed long enough to marry young Henry.  Later he left Staub and the couple went to Wilkensburg, Pa. because his wife (Augusta Umbach) parents lived there.  How she came to Iowa Uncle Theo. never found out.

He said "I think my Grandmother knew my Mother in Germany and sent for her to come to Iowa."

Dates:

Father (Henry Umbach) born Aug 19 1854 (in New Orleans)  Died Oct 2 1891 (age 37)

Mother (Augusta Umbach) born in Germany July 25 1857  Died Mar 25 1946.  She came to the USA 1873 (age 87 when she died)

Grandpa Theodore Hornbrook born 1837  Died 1921 at 84

According to the 1920 Census, Friederich Henry Umbach was born in Maryland

CARL PALMER BUYS HORNBROOK'S DRUG STORE ON MONDAY

C M Hornbrook Retiring__

Partner C. Everette Black to Remain

A business deal of importance was completed here Monday when Charles M Hornbrook sold his interest in Hornbrook's Drug Store to Carol Palmer, young native of New Martinsville who has reutnred to his home town to go into business.

Mr Hornbrook announced the sale Tuesday and said that he is planning "to take things easy for a while" in an effort to improve his health.

Mr. Hornbook's leaving of the business circles of New Martinsville marks the passing of a landmark.  for many years his drug store on Main street has been a favorite spot for those who wanted to pass the time of day over a cool drink.

The veteran druggist was a graduate of the University of Maryland in 1905.  He took the state board examination in Pennsylvania and worked on emergency call out of Pittsburgh for some time.  He came to New Martinsville and bought the old Lowther drug store that stood where the Temple theater is nor located.  In 1911, he moved the store to its present location and in 1920, G. Everette Black became his partner, an arrangement that continued until last Monday.  Mr. Black will remain in the firm with Mr. Palmer, and the store will retain its name "Hornbrook's Drug Store."

In all, Mr Hornbrook has been in the drug store business for himself 39 years and including the years he worked for other druggists, has been in the profession about 47 years.  "I am retiring," said Mr. Hornbrook, "with the kindest feeling for the people of the community who have done so much for me throughout the years, and I can honestly say that such service as I have given has been given gladly and happily.

The new owner, Carl Palmer, is the son of Joseph Palmer and Mrs. Q E Whiteman, and the grandson of Mrs N S Postlethwait, with whom he made his home for many years.

He is a graduate of Magnolia High School and of West Virginia University.  He want to Charles town to take a druggist's position for four years.  Several months ago he moved to Clarksburg to work for the Bland Drug Company, and then made the deal the brought him here.  Mr Palmer is married and has a son.

From the Church Bulletin, College Avenue Baptist Church, San Diego, California

"I am joined by my children in expressing my sincere appreciation for the lovely expression of sympathy in this difficult time.  It is times like these that we appreciate the many friends we have who have showed their love and kindness with cards, flowers, goodies, and phone calls.  Our pain is lessening as we realize that Gene is at peace with our Heavenly Father."
