Notes for ROBERT HALE LOOFBOURROW:
LOOFBOURROW, ROBERT H.
Vol. 5, p. 1811
Judge Loofbourrow retiredfrom the distinguished office of associate justice of the Supreme Court ofOklahoma on the 1st of January, 1915, after having declined nomination for asecond term, and his incumbency of this position fully established his prestigeas one of the leading lawyers and jurists of the state within whose borders hehas maintained his home since 1890. The judge is a scion of a staunch oldScottish family that is of patrician lineage and that was founded in Americaprior to the War of the Revolution, the name having been prominently andworthily identified with the civic and industrial development of various of thesovereign commonwealths of the Union. The genealogy is traced back to LordLoofbourrow, whose descendants immigrated to America in the colonial days andestablished a home in North Carolina, where they became citizens of markedprominence and influence. Representatives of a later generation becameidentified with the pioneer history of Kentucky, and from the old BluegrassState went forth members of a still later generation to become sterlingcitizens of Ohio. Judge Wade Loofbourrow was long one of the most honoredlawyers and jurists at Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio, and by hiswill he devised to that attractive little city, the judicial center of thecounty, his extensive and well selected law library, which is still maintainedas a public law library at that place, the bequest having been the valuablenucleus around which has been gathered one of the best technical libraries ofits kind to be claimed by any of the non-metropolitan counties of the BuckeyeSate. Judge Wade Loofbourrow served on the bench of the Circuit Court and was alawyer of specially high attainments, so that his great-grandson mayconsistently be said to have as natural heritage a predilection for theprofession in which he has achieved marked success and distinction.
Judge Robert H. Loofbourrowwas born on a farm in Marion County, Illinois, on the 29th of January, 1873 andis a son of Orlando J. and Sarah T. (WILSON) Loofbourrow. The judge was a boyat the time of the family removal to Missouri, and a short time thereafterremoval was made to Kansas, where his father became a successful agriculturistand stockgrower and where he remained until 1890, when the family came toOklahoma Territory and settled in Beaver County. Orlando J. Loofbourrow wasborn at Washington Court House, Ohio, but was reared and educated in Illinois, and it was his to gain a full quota of pioneer experience in the West. Aftercoming to Oklahoma he became one of the representative exponents of theagricultural and live-stock industries in the territory.
To the public schools ofKansas Judge Loofbourrow is indebted for his early educational discipline, andin preparation for his chosen profession he entered the Iowa College of Law, inthe City of Des Moines, from which institution he withdrew prior to graduation.Thereafter he continued the study of law under effective private preceptorship,at Beaver, Oklahoma, where, in 1896, he was admitted to the territorial bar, upon examination before the District Court of Beaver County. He initiated thepractice of his profession at Beaver, where he has since continued to maintainhis home and where he soon gained place as one of the leading members of thebar of Beaver County, besides proving one of the most loyal and progressivecitizens of that section of the present State of Oklahoma. From 1897 to 1899 heserved as county attorney, and for the ensuing two years his services continuedto be enlisted in the position of assistant county attorney. In 1904 he againbecame county attorney, and of this office he continued the valued incumbentuntil the admission of Oklahoma to Statehood, in 1907. Higher honors thenbecame his, for under the new state regime he was elected to the bench of theNineteenth Judicial District. He gave a most able and effective administrationand his possession of exceptional judicial acumen gained to him further anddistinguished recognition, since, on the 1st of September, 1913, he wasappointed associate justice of the Supreme Court of the state, to accept whichpreferment he retired from the District Court bench. As associate justice ofthe Supreme Court his earnest and admirable services are now an integral partof the history of that tribunal, from which he retired in January, 1915, owingto his desire to resume the private practice of his profession at Beaver, thejudicial center of the county of the same name.
Judge Loofbourrow is amember of the directorate of the Bank of Beaver and is the owner of valuablereal estate in his home city and county. In the Masonic fraternity he hasattained the eighteenth degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, besideswhich he is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, theBenevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Knights of Pythias, in whichlast mentioned he is past chancellor of Beaver Lodge, No. 7.
On the 16th of May, 1897,was solemnized the marriage of Judge Loofbourrow to Miss Bertha L. GROVES,daughter of Ansel Groves, of Beaver, and they have three sons, Harold, Bernardand Hale.

The flames started inthe upper story, occupied by Harley LeWright and family, who lost almost theirentire household effects. The occupantsof the lower story, R F Innes and wife, and Mrs W H Frey and family, were ableto save nearly all their possessions, slightly damaged by fire and water, thegreatest damage being done to the building, a two-story wooden structure, ofwhich portions of the roof, and the entire interior were destroyed. But for the heroic work of the firedepartment, not only that building, but several others adjoining, would havegone up in smoke. The building, whichhad been sold the day before the fire by Mrs Keser to her brother, John HStratton, who was here from San Francisco to close up the sale, carried aninsurance of $1000 in the Argricultural Fire Insurance Co. of New York. The friends of Mr and Mrs LeWright made up apurse of $92.50, to help them replace their household goods, on which noinsurance was carried. They, with Mrand Mrs Innes, have moved into the Copland building, on Main street, while MrsFrey and family have taken a cottage near the depot, until the Strattonbuilding has been repaired."

"The Grove at LakeTahoe"
"Many El Dorado County families spent their summervacations at The Grove, a popular resort at Lake Tahoe, when it was owned andoperated by John C Copeland and his wife Nellie Parmeter Copeland.
The resort was situated on part of the Matthew Garnerproperty, about where the terminal of his logging railroad was. It was purchased by J Parmeter, MrsCopeland's father, in 1904. MatthewGarner, for whom the town of Garnerville in Nevada was named, acquired vasttimber holdings in that area in 1872, and built a railroad as part of hislogging operations. All of hisactivities came to an end in 1885 when he was forced into backruptcy.
According to various articles on the history of Lake TahoeJohn Copeland, widely known as "Cope", was quite a character. Whether all the stories about him are trueis uncertain, but one thing is clear, and that is that he was a very energeticperson. He must have had some goodtraits to have won the heart of a find person like Nellie Parmeter. (bulk of the article deleted as unnecessary)
In 1909 Harley LeWright and his wife May, J C Copeland'sdaughter, operated the Grove........... ..........it became part of the famous Camp Richardson, one of LakeTahoe's most popular resorts."
