Notes for MOSES SHINN:

Josiah H. Shinn, History of the Shinn Family,  (The Genealogical and Historical Publishing Company.Chicago. 1903), "Electronic," Page 360-361

"....his father gave the young couple a farm opposite Shinnston on the west fork of the Monongahela; followed farming and rafting timber until the spring of 1850; removed to Adams County, Illinois, going the entire distance by water; from Shinnston on his own farm he started on a flatboat down the Monongahela River and remained on it until he reached the head water of steamboat navigation, when he transferred to a steamboat; down the Ohio to its mouth and up the Mississippi to Quincy, where he disembarked; the steamboats then were little palaces, and a trip like that was an event of a lifetime; purchased a farm in Hancock County, twelve miles north of Carthage, the county seat, in 1851; in 1852 returned to Virginia for a team of thoroughbred mares; took back to Illinois a beautiful span of bays that was the pride of Hancock County for years; opened a dairy for the manufacture of butter and cheese, which was successful; to Pike's Peak with a team in 1860 during the gold excitement of that date; located claims which gave evidence of value; returned to Hancock County with the intention of going to Pike's Peak the next year to perfect his claims; attacked in the spring of 1861 with typhoid fever and lost his claim; in 1862 went with a party, his daughter Carrie and her husband being of the number, overland to Oregon; the journey with ox teams required five months and two weeks; the hardships were grievous, and the dangers many and imminent, yet the trip was made without loss; remained three years on Puget Sound and in various parts of Oregon, and desired to remain in Washington; but letters from the good wife in Illinois, who thought she could never go so far, induced him to return to Illinois; went back by way of the Isthmus of Panama and New York City to Hancock County; in 1866 rented their Illinois property and went to Iowa for a year; bought 300 acres in Pottawattomie County; sold the farm in Illinois and with all his stock removed to Iowa in 1867; developed his farm for eleven years; entered a joint stock company for the erection of a flouring mill and grain elevator, which ruined him; he furnished money and other men the experience; in a short time he had all the experience, but no money. Such schemes are called "progressive civilization"; "swindling" would be a truer name. Not disheartened, but with a brave heart, he set out for Osborne County, Kansas, where he homesteaded a farm and began in his old age to rebuild his fortunes. He built a sod house and made an heroic struggle against grasshoppers and drouth; but it was a losing one. His daughter from Washington visited him in 1886, and seeing the seams of care upon his face, induced him to leave Kansas for Washington. He drove from Osborne County to Huntingdon, Ore., in a light wagon in sixty days. Remained in Grant County during the winter; crossed the Cascades in the spring of 1888 and set down at Portland one year. In the summer of 1889 he reached Seattle; visited Olympia, Shelton Roads and other places; finally chose a spot for a home and drove down his stakes for the last effort of his life. La grippe seized him in 1892 and on July 25, 1893, the messenger of death called the wanderer home. Thus ended a long and honorable and most useful life. For more than seventy-five years he had lived a life of happiness and love; always a good citizen, a devoted husband and father; intelligent, cosmopolitan, broad in view and courteous in manner, he had hosts of friends and was generally respected and loved. His wife is still alive in her 83d year, calmly waiting to rejoin the companion of her life."

The Old Prospector

Wasatch County

"Among the early prospectors who organized the Snake Creek Mining District in Wasatch County were the following men, N. C. Springer, F. S. Gregg, John Mitchell, W. H. Smith, Thomas Mallory, Thomas Newman, S. H. Epperson and S. T. Epperson, Joseph McCanell and Theophilus Robey, R. S. Ross, John Davis, A. P. Doudle and many others. In the fall of the year, generally after their farm work was finished, they would wander into the canyons and mountains loaded with pick and shovel, blankets and enough food to last them for a few weeks. They found enough claims to organize the Snake Creek Mining District. Included are some of the articles of their by-laws which show plainly the method of locating and keeping a claim."

Peter Shirts, John and Ephraim Hanks and a Mr. Riggs located in the upper settlement of Midway in 1860. George Bean, Aaron Daniels and Aaron Decker had ranches along the rich grasslands of the Provo River bottoms at what is now Charleston. George Noakes and William Manning were among the first to farm the bench ground above the river."

Sidney H. Epperson, nineteen years of age, was among those in the David Wood company. Sidney played the violin, but preferred dancing with such charming young ladies as Mary Jane and Agnes. Mary Jane, from Virginia, would later become Sidney's wife. Her father, Jeremiah Robey, was baptized by the Prophet Joseph Smith. He also had the distinction of hanging the last door on the Nauvoo Temple.

Notes for RUTH TUCKER:

The Standard Newspaper, Ogden, Utah  January 23 1892

A NOBLE WOMAN GONE

Another old-timer has gone, another of the courageous souls that redeemed the wilderness, to make it a pleasant abode, has taken its flight to other realms.  On Sunday, the 17th, Mrs. Ruth Robey expired suddenly of heart failure, her husband, Jeremiah Robey, Esq., sitting by her.  She had been his faithful spouse and true helpmate for more than half a century.  The deceased was born in Shynston (sic), Harrison County, Virginia, June 26 1816.  She married when 17 years of age, Jeremiah Robey, with whom she removed in 1841 to Nauvoo, where they were identified in full faith and good works with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, bearing their share of hardships succeeding the martyrdom of the prophets Joseph and Hyrum.  Mr. and Mrs. Robey came to Utah in 1852, soon moving up to Provo Valley, where they assisted valiantly and industriously in settling this thriving and prosperous place and "growing up with the country."  Mr. Robey was honored by the confidence of his fellow citizens with many public trusts, especially as a member of a long succession of school boards, and "Gran'ma" Robey ever was the friend of young and old, even outside of her immediate family circle.  For, though of ten children, born to them in the course of long years of loving union, six were taken from them by death, she leaves 41 grandchildren, 152 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild to mourn her loss, which in a measure is felt by the entire neighborhood, whose warm affection and full confidence the deceased enjoyed even to her demise.   This was nobly evident on the occasion of the funeral on Tuesday afternoon, when the meetinghouse was crowded with young and old, about 200 school children being in attendance in honor of "Grandma Robey," whose husband has so long been prominent in the development of the youth of Midway.  Bishop Van Wagener and Counselors Watkins and Alexander, in feeling language, extolled the virtues of the deceased sister and spoke words of hope-inspiring comfort to the bereaved family, who have the sympathies of all, including many old time friends in Ogden, such as Hon. D H Perry and family.

From a Journal written by James Allison Robey in 1815

April 23rd Sunday Morning

From Cummins I went 8 miles to breakfast with a Mr. Evaultt from Evultts to Parris is 5 miles.  When I got to Parris I went directly to the sheriff of the county to inquire for Uncle Hezekiah Robey.  He told me he lived 14 miles from Parris on the Iron Works road or road leading to the upper Bleu Lick.  I started immediately and got there about 2 o'clock in the afternoon.  When I arrived I found Uncle Hez and Aunt Polly was not at home.  They had gone to see their son Owen.  Cousin Emma was the eldest at home and from my conversation and freedom Emma conjectured that I must be a distant relation or acquaintance.  Her anxiety still increased to know who I was and I would not tell her, as I wanted to see whether uncle could find me out when he came.  On Emma's hearing me wish for her fathers return, she sent her brother Leonard off in haste to inform his father of me.  On Leonard telling uncle of me and also what I had said he concluded it must be me and accordingly when he came he called me by name.  I then made myself known, which afforded no snall satisfaction and surprise.  They informed me that the relation were all generally in health.

April 24th Monday

I staid (sic) at Uncle Robey's all day.  Aunt Polly is very unwell. We suppose she has caught cold by her visit to Owen yesterday.

April 25th Tuesday

I went in the evening to uncle Thomas Darnals about a mile distance.

May 1st 1815, Monday

I am still at uncle Hez Robeys.  I have been to see some of my cousins and chance I have seen nearly all of them.  I was at James Tippets on Saturday night last.  This Tippet married  cousin Sally Robey.

Ira L Swiger, A Genealogical and Biographical History of the Swiger Family,  (Fairmont Printing and Publishing Co., Fairmont West Virginia. 1916), "Electronic," Page 38

According to this source, Patrick and Emaline separated.  She moved to Gore Stop, near Clarksburg and Patrick lived on Talkington Fork, Doddridge County, West Virginia.  If this is true, then it must have occurred after 1880 as they are listed in the 1880 Census for Doddridge with their 6 children

Notes for JOHN LOVEBERRY GRIFFIN:

According to a book on the families of Upper Monongahela Valley, West Virgina, John L. Griffin built a log house on Jones' Run, in the Eagle district of Harrison Co., WV., about 1847.   John L. lived in the house for about 10 years and Sheridan Russell Griffin, son of James Alison Griffin,  was born there.  John L. Griffin  sold the house to his brother, James Alison, who torn it down, moved it to another location, rebuilt, and then lived in the house from 1861 to 1867.

Ed Note:  The Death Register of Harrison Co listed his deaths as Feb. 29 1898.  However, that was not a leap year.  It is therefore possible that he actually died on March 1 and the date was entered incorrectly.  His son, J S Griffin,  who reported the death, listed John L as unmarried.
