THE JONATHAN OGDENS COME TO VIRGINIA
"In about the mid and late 1700s, the town of Port
Tobacco, Maryland was a thriving community of people building new lives for
themselves. The area was a world of
beautiful plantations from which products, particularly tobacco,
were shipped out via the
Port Tobacco River to England.
Returning ships brought back not only necessities, but also
"fancies" to be enjoyed. This
was early America's Port Tobacco, a happy and prosperous community.
Living in this beautiful land was the family of one Jonathan
Ogden,
consisting of Jonathan, his
wife Anne, who had been born and raised at Howell's Delight, one of the fine
plantations in the area, and their ten children: Tabitha, William R., Mary,
Sarah, Samuel, Nathan, Susannah, Nancy Ann and Elizabeth. Life was good.
But years bring change and so they did to Port Tobacco. First, the
Revolutionary War, then and
probably even more damaging, the river which had
been the life blood of the
community, began to silt badly, making transportation and shipping almost
impossible. Without the river, times
declined, causing many to leave the area.
Thus, the story of the Ogden family.
In the late 1790s, William, Jonathan's oldest son, joined a
party of
immigrants and crossed the
Allegheny Mountains into Virginia. The
land
looked inviting, the soil
was rich, and water and timber were plentiful.
No
question -- this would be
their new home. After a year or so,
William returned to Port Tobacco, hoping to convince his family to join
him. With one exception, Samuel, all
agreed. The Jonathan Ogden family was
on its way.
Definite dates are unknown.
However, on 9 Feb. 1804 an "Indenture was drawn up granting
Jonathan and Thomas a certain parcel of land, the description of which is very
interesting. For a consideration of
$100.00 they were granted a parcel of land in the County of Harrison, State of
Virginia. Boundaries
were the West Fork River,
and others described in words, such as: "Beginning
at a Mulberry tree",
"86 poles to a chestnut," "24 poles to the mouth of the
run," etc. It would contain 100 acres, "together
with all privileges and commodities thereto belonging or in any wise
appertaining with all its appurtenances."
The last paragraph was very clear -- 'To have and to hold the
said tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenances unto the said Jonathan
Ogden and
Thomas Ogden and their
heirs and assigns forever."
Jonathan died in 1807 and was buried in a private cemetery
close to the house in which they lived.
Anne continued to live until 1825 and is buried at
Jonathan's side.
The Jonathan Ogdens planted their roots deep into the
Virginia soil and since that time many descendants have taken their places and
carried out their
responsibilities in the
affairs of community and state. They
helped this new
country grow into what, in
1863, was to become the 35th state of the Union -- "

ancestors. My father was not a church member and what religious belief he held

mother's family did, but her father, my grandfather, was an abolitionist and
never sold any slaves and freed 36, all he had, before his death (1851). All
his children were brought up to believe that slavery was wrong in principle and
he and some of his children suffered persecution on account of his belief on

Josiah H. Shinn, History of

"....his father gave the young couple a farm opposite
Shinnston on the west fork of the Monongahela; followed farming and rafting
timber until the spring of 1850; removed to Adams County, Illinois, going the
entire distance by water; from Shinnston on his own farm he started on a
flatboat down the Monongahela River and remained on it until he reached the
head water of steamboat navigation, when he transferred to a steamboat; down
the Ohio to its mouth and up the Mississippi to Quincy, where he disembarked;
the steamboats then were little palaces, and a trip like that was an event of a
lifetime; purchased a farm in Hancock County, twelve miles north of Carthage,
the county seat, in 1851; in 1852 returned to Virginia for a team of
thoroughbred mares; took back to Illinois a beautiful span of bays that was the
pride of Hancock County for years; opened a dairy for the manufacture of butter
and cheese, which was successful; to Pike's Peak with a team in 1860 during the
gold excitement of that date; located claims which gave evidence of value;
returned to Hancock County with the intention of going to Pike's Peak the next
year to perfect his claims; attacked in the spring of 1861 with typhoid fever
and lost his claim; in 1862 went with a party, his daughter Carrie and her
husband being of the number, overland to Oregon; the journey with ox teams required
five months and two weeks; the hardships were grievous, and the dangers many
and imminent, yet the trip was made without loss; remained three years on Puget
Sound and in various parts of Oregon, and desired to remain in Washington; but
letters from the good wife in Illinois, who thought she could never go so far,
induced him to return to Illinois; went back by way of the Isthmus of Panama
and New York City to Hancock County; in 1866 rented their Illinois property and
went to Iowa for a year; bought 300 acres in Pottawattomie County; sold the
farm in Illinois and with all his stock removed to Iowa in 1867; developed his
farm for eleven years; entered a joint stock company for the erection of a
flouring mill and grain elevator, which ruined him; he furnished money and
other men the experience; in a short time he had all the experience, but no
money. Such schemes are called "progressive civilization";
"swindling" would be a truer name. Not disheartened, but with a brave
heart, he set out for Osborne County, Kansas, where he homesteaded a farm and
began in his old age to rebuild his fortunes. He built a sod house and made an
heroic struggle against grasshoppers and drouth; but it was a losing one. His
daughter from Washington visited him in 1886, and seeing the seams of care upon
his face, induced him to leave Kansas for Washington. He drove from Osborne
County to Huntingdon, Ore., in a light wagon in sixty days. Remained in Grant
County during the winter; crossed the Cascades in the spring of 1888 and set down
at Portland one year. In the summer of 1889 he reached Seattle; visited
Olympia, Shelton Roads and other places; finally chose a spot for a home and
drove down his stakes for the last effort of his life. La grippe seized him in
1892 and on July 25, 1893, the messenger of death called the wanderer home.
Thus ended a long and honorable and most useful life. For more than
seventy-five years he had lived a life of happiness and love; always a good
citizen, a devoted husband and father; intelligent, cosmopolitan, broad in view
and courteous in manner, he had hosts of friends and was generally respected
and loved. His wife is still alive in her 83d year, calmly waiting to rejoin
the companion of her life."

The Old Prospector
Wasatch County
"Among the early prospectors who organized the Snake
Creek Mining District in Wasatch County were the following men, N. C. Springer,
F. S. Gregg, John Mitchell, W. H. Smith, Thomas Mallory, Thomas Newman, S. H.
Epperson and S. T. Epperson, Joseph McCanell and Theophilus Robey, R. S. Ross,
John Davis, A. P. Doudle and many others. In the fall of the year, generally
after their farm work was finished, they would wander into the canyons and
mountains loaded with pick and shovel, blankets and enough food to last them
for a few weeks. They found enough claims to organize the Snake Creek Mining
District. Included are some of the articles of their by-laws which show plainly
the method of locating and keeping a claim."

Sidney H. Epperson,
nineteen years of age, was among those in the David Wood company. Sidney played
the violin, but preferred dancing with such charming young ladies as Mary Jane

father, Jeremiah Robey, was baptized by the Prophet Joseph Smith. He also had
the distinction of hanging the last door on the Nauvoo Temple.

A NOBLE WOMAN GONE
Another old-timer has gone, another of the courageous souls
that redeemed the wilderness, to make it a pleasant abode, has taken its flight
to other realms. On Sunday, the 17th,
Mrs. Ruth Robey expired suddenly of heart failure, her husband, Jeremiah Robey,
Esq., sitting by her. She had been his
faithful spouse and true helpmate for more than half a century. The deceased was born in Shynston (sic),
Harrison County, Virginia, June 26 1816.
She married when 17 years of age, Jeremiah Robey, with whom she removed
in 1841 to Nauvoo, where they were identified in full faith and good works with
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, bearing their share of
hardships succeeding the martyrdom of the prophets Joseph and Hyrum. Mr. and Mrs. Robey came to Utah in 1852,
soon moving up to Provo Valley, where they assisted valiantly and industriously
in settling this thriving and prosperous place and "growing up with the
country." Mr. Robey was honored by
the confidence of his fellow citizens with many public trusts, especially as a
member of a long succession of school boards, and "Gran'ma" Robey
ever was the friend of young and old, even outside of her immediate family
circle. For, though of ten children, born
to them in the course of long years of loving union, six were taken from them
by death, she leaves 41 grandchildren, 152 great grandchildren, and 1
great-great-grandchild to mourn her loss, which in a measure is felt by the
entire neighborhood, whose warm affection and full confidence the deceased enjoyed
even to her demise. This was nobly
evident on the occasion of the funeral on Tuesday afternoon, when the
meetinghouse was crowded with young and old, about 200 school children being in
attendance in honor of "Grandma Robey," whose husband has so long been
prominent in the development of the youth of Midway. Bishop Van Wagener and Counselors Watkins and Alexander, in
feeling language, extolled the virtues of the deceased sister and spoke words
of hope-inspiring comfort to the bereaved family, who have the sympathies of
all, including many old time friends in Ogden, such as Hon. D H Perry and
family.

From a Journal written by
James Allison Robey in 1815
April 23rd Sunday Morning
From Cummins I went 8 miles to breakfast with a Mr. Evaultt
from Evultts to Parris is 5 miles. When
I got to Parris I went directly to the sheriff of the county to inquire for
Uncle Hezekiah Robey. He told me he
lived 14 miles from Parris on the Iron Works road or road leading to the upper
Bleu Lick. I started immediately and
got there about 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
When I arrived I found Uncle Hez and Aunt Polly was not at home. They had gone to see their son Owen. Cousin Emma was the eldest at home and from
my conversation and freedom Emma conjectured that I must be a distant relation
or acquaintance. Her anxiety still
increased to know who I was and I would not tell her, as I wanted to see
whether uncle could find me out when he came.
On Emma's hearing me wish for her fathers return, she sent her brother
Leonard off in haste to inform his father of me. On Leonard telling uncle of me and also what I had said he
concluded it must be me and accordingly when he came he called me by name. I then made myself known, which afforded no
snall satisfaction and surprise. They
informed me that the relation were all generally in health.
April 24th Monday
I staid (sic) at Uncle Robey's all day. Aunt Polly is very unwell. We suppose she
has caught cold by her visit to Owen yesterday.
April 25th Tuesday
I went in the evening to uncle Thomas Darnals about a mile
distance.
May 1st 1815, Monday
I am still at uncle Hez Robeys. I have been to see some of my cousins and chance I have seen
nearly all of them. I was at James Tippets
on Saturday night last. This Tippet
married cousin Sally Robey.

Notes for ELIZABETH SHINN:
The obituary from the
newspaper reporting her death reads in part: Rev. Henry langford, Baptist
Minister, said, "She was one of the little band that first lifted in
Sardis the banner of truth, and contended for the faith once delivered to the
Saints." The article went on to
report that "Elizabeth Shinn had been a great sufferer for many year. Consumption worked slowly but fatally. She was a humble, devoted, patient, trusting
Christian; a kind true and loving wife, mother and neighbor. But their loss is her gain. It is well for the patient sufferer to be at
rest and we would not recall her if we could, but say, the Lord's will be
done."

"Bigler, Jacob G., a Patriarch in the Juab Stake of Zion, was born April 4, 1813, in Harrison county, Virginia (now West Virginia), the son of Mark Bigler and Susanna (Ogden) Bigler. In a biographical sketch prepared for this volume, Patriarch Bigler wrote: "My boyhood days were passed at home with my parents at the place of my birth. I remained there till I was twenty-five years old. My father and I were farmers, to which he also added stock raising on a small scale. During this time I heard "Mormonism" taught and was a believer, but did not join the Church until I went to Far West, Mo. in March, 1838. There I investigated the principles more fully and was thoroughly convinced of their truth. On the 10th of June, 1838, I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After I had been in Far West awhile, I bought a farm of 240 acres for my father and myself. We were to give $2,000 and paid $200 down to bind the bargain. In July, 1838, I returned to Virginia. We sold our landed property, and I took my mother and unmarried sisters (I had no brothers) viz., Sarah, Bathsheba W. and Melissa Jane, and returned to Far West. In the meantime Governor Boggs had issued his exterminating order and we, with the rest of the Saints, were compelled to leave the State or deny the faith. We left Far West Feb. 11, 1839, traveling through deep snow, and arrived in Quincy, Ill., about the 1st of March. My first acquaintance with the Prophet Joseph Smith was in March, 1838. I became intimately acquainted with him and his family, also his father and family, from that time until the martyrdom. I helped to move him and family, also his father and family, from Quincy to Commerce (now Nauvoo); the Egyptian mummies were a part of my load. My father was taken sick and on the 23rd of September, 1839, he died. Mother and I administered on the estate and when we got that settled in the spring of 1840, we moved to Nauvoo. In March, 1841, I returned to Virginia, and on the 19th of April, I was married to Mary Ann Boggess. In May I, with my wife, returned to Nauvoo. Oct. 29, 1842, my wife died with fever and in March, 1843, I returned to Virginia on business. May 24, 1844, I returned to Nauvoo, and on the 18th of June I married Amy Lorette Chase. I worked on the Temple at Nauvoo from that time, nearly continuously, until its completion. I remained in Nauvoo until June 10, 1846 when I crossed the Mississippi river and made a start for the west with a poor outfit for the journey, but was greatly blessed of the Lord and arrived at Winter Quarters on the 18th of August, 1846. There I remained until the spring of 1848. Being on the Indian reservation, we had to recross the river, not having means to continue our journey west. We settled near Kanesville, Iowa, and afterwards moved into that town. In the spring of 1849, I was called to take charge of the general tithing office of Pottawattamie county, Iowa, receiving the tithing from the seventeen Bishop's Wards or branches of the Church, and looking after the poor. There were many poor there who could go no farther. I acted as Bishop of Kanesville, and also as a member of the High Council. At the August election, (1849) I was elected justice of the peace, and the following August (1850) was elected probate judge of Pottawattamie county. From the spring of 1849 until the spring of 1852 my time was almost entirely taken up with looking after the duties of my office, both in Church and State capacities. In 1850 I was preparing to start west to Utah, but Apostle Orson Hyde wanted my services in Iowa, so I remained there till 1852. On June 10, 1852, we crossed the Missouri river with a moderate outfit for the journey, and were organized in Captain Gardner's company, it being company 10. I was captain of the first ten families. We arrived in Salt Lake City in September. After remaining in the city a short time, I left for Nephi, Juab county, Utah, arriving there Oct. 18, 1852, where I have lived ever since, until the present time (1907). This settlement was commenced in 1851. In November, 1852, I was ordained Bishop of Juab county under the hands of Apostle Geo. A. Smith, which position I held till 1861, when I was called on a mission to Europe. In June, 1853
