A Genealogy of the Warne Family in America Principally the Descendants of Thomas Warne, born 1652, died 1722, one of the Twenty-four Proprietors of East New Jersey BY REV. GEORGE WARNE LABAW, PASTOR OF THE REFORMED CHURCH OF PREAKNESS, NEW JERSEY.  (Frank Allaben Genealogical
Company, 1911) (Family Tree Maker GenealogyOnline.Com) Page 587
The Herberts, of Wickatunk, N. J., are "descended from Sir Phillip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke. Francis Herbert, the first representative of that name in New Jersey, was a grandson of Sir Phillip Herbert, and, with thirty associates, came from Long Island in 1677, and settled in Middletown, Monmouth Co., N. J. He married (according to Hon. John W. Herbert, of New York, 1904) Hannah, daughter of the celebrated Quaker, John Bowne, who located on Long Island in 1659." Miss Edith H. Mather, however, says that her mother, the late Mrs. DeWitt Clinton Mather, claimed that Francis Herbert married Hannah Applegate. "Francis and Hannah Herbert had four sons and three daughters." Hon. John W. Herbert says they were "Thomas, Francis, David, Obadiah, Elizabeth, Deborah, and Mary." Mrs. Mather declared they were, Thomas, Francis, Samuel, Obediah, Elizabeth, Bridget and Mary. "Obadiah" or Obediah "Herbert, in 1729, married Hannah, dau. of William Lawrence, Jr., of Middletown, who was a grandson of Henry Lawrence, President of Cromwell's Council, and son of William Lawrence, Sen. William Lawrence, Jr., married Ruth Gibbons. Obadiah Herbert, one of the nine children of Obadiah (or Obediah) Herbert and Hannah Lawrence, married in 1765, Elizabeth Warne, granddaughter of Thomas Warne, one of the twenty-four Proprietors of East Jersey, and settled in Middlesex County."

The children of Obediah Herbert and Hannah Lawrence Herbert, as given by Mrs. D. W. C. Mather, copied from Bible, printed in London, 1678, in possession of Mary Whitlock Spader, of Matawan, N. J., were: Obediah, John, William, Francis, Richard, Felix, Esek, Hannah, Ruth. The record itself is as follows:
"My son Obediah Herbert was born Sept. 9th day about 12 of the clock at night 1731."
"My son John Herbert was born 17th Jan. on Wed. about one o'clock in the afternoon 1732-3," (1733).
"My son William Herbert was born Sept. 27th on Thursday about ten o'clock at night 1734."
"My son Francis Herbert was born the 21st of May on Friday about three o'clock in the afternoon and died in the year 1736."
"My son Richard Herbert was born on Friday Nov. 2nd day at ten o'clock in the evening 1738."
"Be it remembered that Eleanor Howard, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Howard, was born on Sunday August 3rd 1755 about six o'clock in the afternoon."
"My son Felix Herbert was born the 18th of Oct. about six o'clock in the evening 1740."
"My son Esek Herbert was born the 18th of Oct. about 9 o'clock in the evening 1740."
"My daughter Hannah Herbert was born Tuesday the 12th of Oct. about twelve of the clock at night 1742."
"Esek Herbert deceased on Tuesday Mar. 22nd about twelve of the clock at noon 1742-3."
"My daughter Ruth Herbert was born on Tuesday the 13th of March about eleven o'clock at night 1746."
