122. Gary Martin Sr., History of Lumberport and Surrounding Communities, (Revised Edition July 1977. ProComPrint, Salem, WV), In the winter of 1778, several families took refuge in Fort Harbert on Jones Run Creek in (West) Virginia. They were concerned about hostile Indians seeking revenge for the death of their mighty Shawnee chieftain Keigh-tugh-qua, or the Cornstalk. On March 3rd, Indians attacked the barn-like structure of Fort Harbert. Thomas was killed while grappling with an Indian warrior. In addition to Thomas being killed during the attack, four other adults were wounded, and seven or eight children in the yard were killed or taken prisoners. One Indian was killed, and two badly wounded. Survivors included Samuel Harbert at about 18 years old, Edward was sixteen, Thomas Jr. was ten, John was nine, and William was about six.
